Good or bad, it seems to be coming. Hopefully this works in MSU’s favor. It’s hard to speculate with all the moving parts, but I hope this means we can poach more guys buried on the top schools benches.

ETA: I read this initially on the score app but posted another article because I think you can only read it on the app. Here is the score article.

Apropos of nothing; the video player on SI's websites that's hard to close and follows you down as you scroll to read the article is mildly infuriating.

It will be absolutely disastrous for MSU unless the SEC steps in and keeps the one year sit-out rule in place for transfers within the league. Then it will still be not great for us, but maybe a little more manageable. This plus the NIL stuff is going to 100% destroy any chance we ever had at high level competition within the SEC in football and men’s basketball.

If you are an MSU baseball fan, good for you, keep on doing what you’re doing. If you aren’t, you better figure out how to become one in the next few years. By 2030, it’s going to be the only sport we have that’s ever going to be worth a ****.

On the average, long-term, this is going to work out for MSU. Players generally do not transfer if they are playing, save for a few like the quarterback King from Houston that went to Miami, but that was from G5 to P5. Most of the time it is going to be guys at blue bloods who are looking to play.

Of course, when a guy makes a move up like King (mentioned above) it gets the headlines, but it is the exception rather than the rule. The vast majority of transfers are going the other way. This also means that blue bloods will never have a hole in their lineup, which is a wash at the end of the day. It is not like the big time blue blood transfers like Daniels and Fields are not already getting approved.

I do not care if the highly paid coaches have to work harder at recruiting.

Based on what I've seen so far with liberalized transfers, the law of averages has some catching up to do for this to be a net gain for MSU. We've not had good luck overall with it.

Do you care that our incentive program now has to be 4x more competitive for elite players (meaning 4x as much money from friends of the program) in order for us to just sustain the same level of recruiting as we have now, let alone improve it? Has nothing to do with how hard the coaches work...80% of recruiting is not done by the coaches.

Go Budaw is spot on. When you combine this with the NIL rule changes coming, this will have 2 effects.

1. We will further separate ourselves from the non Power 5 schools in major sports.

2. The big money SEC schools like Bama, Florida, Georgia, etc will gain further separation from us. The odds of winning a football or basketball SEC/national championship will go way down.

These separations in both areas have grown significantly in the last 20 years. And that will only accelerate in the coming 10 years. The gaps will get bigger.

If you're talking about football, I don't think that's quite right for a few issues.

One, it makes it less risky for players to give it a shot at blue bloods. So yes, we'll get some shots at people transferring away from blue bloods, but we might lose some on the front end and only get them for two years instead of four.

Two, the best transfers will probably be looking for the best team possible with a hole at their position, which usually will not be us. So I think you'll see a lot of blue blood to blue blood transfers like Fields going from UGA to OSU more than you'll see UGA to MSU. We'll probably get our fair share of G5 players moving up, but most of those players won't be game changes, although they might help us plug some holes.

I don't think this is going to hammer us by any means, but I don't think we'll get a big benefit, at least compared to other SEC schools. Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised and the blue bloods will have a lot of RS Sophomores and Jrs. that are important for depth reasons leave to try to be a starter at a different school.

I also think as long as we have leach, we'll be a little better positioned than average, because at least on offense, there will probably be a concern about how our offensive players will do if they leave our system.

The way I see it, Alabama never has to worry about missing on a kid again. If a diamond in the rough appears at UAB, USM, Tulane, they can pull him. If a 5-star signs at Alabama and is a bust, that same list will take him in a heartbeat. It basically means Alabama will get every player they want. It will be a little harder to pull a player if he's starting at a lower-tier SEC school.

Im just using Alabama as an example.

My thoughts exactly. As good as elite programs have been in the past, you could almost always find a weak spot. Even with Bama, up until just a few seasons ago, there were plenty of teams around the league with better QBs.

Going forward, you’ll be hard pressed to ever find a weak link on the elite teams any longer

The G5 is screwed. They just became a D-League for the P5.
X/O coaching is going to be more important too. Before, it was all about crootin but now there will be more parity and you can just pick a player up from the portal and even talent gaps. System coaches might have more of an advantage, Leach is looking better and better.

I'd love to see the NCAA put a framework of some kind around it, such as capping the number of transfers a university can take. Additionally the SEC needs to keep the eligibility rule of having to sit out a year if you transfer within conference.

I can see a scenario where this could be great for us, too. I think the NCAA just needs to put a framework there. But as others have said in this thread, G5 and lower division kids have no incentive to stay there if they are really good players.

If the transfers continue to count against the 25 signing limit, that in theory will help some, but in practice, if they need to get around the 25 cap they will just "walk-on" and take out a loan (that certainly won't be paid back by boosters, wink wink) to pay tuition for a year until they can be put on scholarship without counting against the limit.

Yeah I'm not seeing any big change here......has the playoff been some type of inclusive system or something up until now? hahaha

It's not a huge change, except that now the blue bloods will get almost all the highly rated players out of high school, and in those instances where they misevaluate, they get a free do over. Not going to make a huge difference in the ultimate result, but it's still a big difference. Probably the most obvious place will be in vegas lines for championships. Won't even have long shots credible enough to generate realistic lines.

There will be top level players who dont want to go to the region's 3 best programs because there is already a line of talent at their position.
And those top programs can only offer so many of scholarships overall and so many per year. There will still be tons of talent available for the programs that arent tops in their conference/region.

This 1 time allowance may mean more freshmen transfer if they dont play as much as they want. Thats instead of waiting another year or so.

Great, so now every college athlete will be a free agent every year. Also have to deal with a second round of recruiting enticements especially for football and MBB. The sit out year was the only thing keeping a bit of sanity to the situation. But of course the NCAA was only selectively enforcing that like they selectively enforce every rule.

That's because the fox (Saban) is in charge of the henhouse. Anything that makes Alabama better will happen. He is leading the NCAA around by the nose.

It would make a booster think twice before offering bribes. "Take the money, play one season, take money from another school's booster and transfer". I could see a bidding war.

I don't this will hurt us that much. We pretty much had that rule this year.

State added six in the portal. I don't see any star power but several (Polk, Green and Charlton) all may see the field with Jack Abraham being given a real shot to take the QB job. I doubt he gets it but he definitely added depth for the year. Greek or Sawyer maybe the real deal but I think we all feel a little better having the option of a veteran as backup if needed.

Yes, State lost lots to the portal this year but were any of them really contributing? Maybe Shavers and Jace Christmann? Shavers was gone whether the portal existed or not and this is his 2nd move and Jace got beat out. So, the only contributor lost this year was a kicker that we all really loved but was not getting to play.

I think that's what you will see every year. Players not getting to play looking for a chance to play but they only get one shot at it. If they aren't getting playing time by year 3, you won't really miss them that much and if you do, roster limits will always be there.

Bama, LSU and GA do not want our rejects, trust me but we might take a few of theirs. It was nice to get Green from Texas to help in our secondary after missing on those DB's last recruiting cycle or two.

I don't see it changing tons either way as long as they work it. Roster limits still exist and players aren't finding new homes without dropping down a level unless they are former 4/5 star types.

I think the one-time transfer rule could really help schools like us. Because if a guy comes to MSU or OM and thrives early, it’s unlikely he’s transferring to Alabama or LSU. He can go pro here just as well. But, if a guy goes to Jacksonville St. and is a star, he will transfer to the SEC because of TV. That gives us a shot, at least. We will also get the guys who are really talented, but buried on depth chart at Alabama, LSU or Georgia. Otis Reese is an example. He may be our best defensive player now.

The NIL is the deal that concerns me. I’m for it, don’t get me wrong. Because I think it’s just the right thing for the players. But it seems like an opportunity for the rich to get richer. I think it’s going to be imperative that our athletic departments are forward thinking, very early on with this, or that already wide gap will continue to widen. And schools like Oregon with Phil Knight or Oklahoma State when T Boone was alive, are going to potentially have opportunities to legally buy players. It will become very, very interesting.

Yeah, Alabama football is only going to get better, but that’s not the concern. The real problem is the other 10 SEC schools that all have numbers of living alumni, active boosters, and money in general that completely dwarf ours.

the worry isn’t losing rejects to Bama, etc. the worry is losing an all-SEC freshman, etc to them. For instance, someone tell me why Devion Smith is transferring from our basketball team bc it isn’t playing time or how well he is doing. My theory is teams with bigger names are recruiting him...
