Landon Sims - Is he under-used?

How many times have we thrown him twice in a weekend? Maybe we have, but it seems we get 1-2 innings out of him a week and he’s one of the best in the country right now and getting people out. I know his value of being able to shut things down is huge, and maybe he can be used more than once and we haven’t been in multiple clutch situations in one weekend yet. But I hate seeing someone like that not on the field often

B. Smith, Stinnett, P. Johnson, Harding, etc. have all given up some runs in SEC play. We’ve still got some unknowns in that group.

He’s been used perfectly IMO. Most of his outings have been multiple innings. Pretty much burnt after that.

Plus other guys need work.

Very much. He hasn't pitched 2 games in 4 SEC series, and in 3 of them he's thrown 26 pitches or fewer. I'm all for saving pitchers arms, and what Arkansas did with Kopp the last 2 weekends could come back to haunt them. But Sims could definitely be used more with no long term effects.

I mean we sure as heck weren’t pitching him today with a 10 run lead most of the game. And yesterday’s game wasn’t really close either. I think he probably could’ve been used again in the third Kentucky game but it ended up working out, and now I think Stinnett is coming on strong so that experience may have really helped him.

To me the main thing is that only half or fewer than half of our conference games so far have even been close. He’s pitched in the majority of our close games in SEC play, there just haven’t been many of them yet. As we have more close games I expect you’ll see him more frequently.

I didn't grow up playing baseball. So the more I watch the more I learn how much a chess match it is. Don't start him against OM. Start him Tuesday against Arkansas State and then let OM worry where and when he will play next weekend.

This. Not sure when else you use him this weekend. We've got a lot of arms that need work in conference for next year. I'm not throwing Sims today because in a 19-8 ball game I want KC Hunt getting reps and trying to get comfortable in an approach that will help him next year in conference.

I've questioned one or two situations where we haven't used him, but for the most part I think it's been fine.

He’s a max effort guy. At most, use him midweek if needed and then once a weekend.

We have a ton of depth. Arm injuries are a real thing, especially when you throw 96.

I would much rather use him sparingly now and have him fresh for the stretch run than throw him in every game until his arm falls off like Arkansas is teetering toward doing with Kopps.

We’ve actually been through this before with Self and Price in 2017. We used them a ton all season and by the end of the year neither guy was as sharp. And then they never got back to that level in subsequent years.

I can understand this thinking but this is the time to underuse him and see who else will be a go to person come May. We might even get lucky and find more than two or three.
