Is out rest of the year with the same injury Riley Self has. LSU's season went from bad to worse. He probably was a high draft pick as well. Hate it for the kid, not so much for LSU.

High draft prospect is an understatement. Was the #4 overall prospect at the time we played them, ahead of even Leiter at Vandy.

Tommy John wreaking havoc. I wish I knew the true culprit, whether it's pitch count or velocity or lack of rest. Probably all of the above, but velo seems the most likely culprit, that has increased across the board. People are controlling pitch counts now, and lack of rest, but the TJ cases are staying high.

Not everybody is meant to throw 90+, but everyone is being coached to throw harder.

Speaking of Leiter and Rocker. It looks like Vandy throws those guys over 100 pitches in every outing. Might this catch up to them at some point as the season wears on with arm fatigue?

One thing for sure with those guys, the only way to beat them is to pitch with them until it becomes a bullpen game. Easier said than done.

It’s just getting more competitive. You have to throw harder now and be a better pitcher now to make each subsequent jump up to high school, to college, to the minors, and to the majors versus 20 years ago. And to be a better pitcher with more velocity, you have to have had many more reps. Many more reps means more wear and tear at an earlier point in your career. Thus, more injuries earlier.

Yeah. I've been reading a lot about it over the years. Basically it's not the velocity, but the bad mechanics that are taught in order to achieve velocity i.e. throwing harder than your body is built to throw.

I always take it back to Little League. What is being taught? Well, in mine, not many mechanics at all. It's all about getting kids to throw hard. Many of them are taking lessons to add speed already. Not very much long tossing, either, which develops mechanics, or the kinetic chain. Not much balance. People are also crazy about pitch counts, and while they matter, obviously they aren't QUITE as important as we once thought, assuming you aren't going overboard.

Guys like Kumar Rocker can throw hard and long all day long, that dude's body is built for it.
