Anyone blaming Wokeness for the problems with WBB should re-think it

Like someone else said, I'm pretty positive the players share the same views as their coach.

But good players recognize bad coaching very quickly. Doesn't matter if its college women's basketball, little league baseball, or professional sports. She's an awful coach and the players don't want to play for her. Don't know if AEH and Sansa had a heads up on this or not, but six, possibly seven players hitting the portal before the Final Four is set is extremely concerning, and if the athletic department cares about the future of the program, they'd better get to the bottom of what's really going on or the program is going to completely tank. No matter if you care about Women's Basketball or not, it was nice to have a competitive program. We do not want it to be a complete joke. Remember Brenda Bowlin as Volleyball Coach?

NMP needs to go. Yesterday.

The first call needs to be to Johnnie Harris with a huge apology and a big check. If she doesn't accept, call Joni Taylor and offer her everything Vic wanted.

I believe both of them would take the job. Harris is an associate head coach and Taylor would love to coach MSU. Both have shown that they can win in the SEC. If somehow we could get neither, hire Chanda Rigby. She's got Mississippi ties and has done great at Troy (should have won their first round game against A&M)

No way all three turn us down, and all three would coach circles around our current staff.

Penson outdid all of their sucktitude this past year. She, quite possibly, had the worst single season performance of any coach in the history of our athletic department.

What in the blue 17 makes you think Joni Taylor would love to coach Mississippi State?

I agree. You cannot defend what she did to our program. Dawn Staley could not have planned it any better.

No one wants to play for us.
We get blown out by bad teams.
Fans don't want to come to games.

That is the bottom line. Now, when you factor in that the average middle class MSU women's basketball fan is saving or has sacrificed so that their kids can go to MSU, they don't want to be lectured by a group of students on full scholarship about being oppressed. The 'woke' issue is a symptom, not the problem.

When Vic left there should have been a lot of coaches that would have wanted to coach at MSU. It was a plum job. That won't be the case if we have to hire again quickly because the NMP experiment is a failure. I wanted Harris to get the job at the time NMP was hired but that was for continuity with the program, especially in the COVID environment. But that is all gone now.

I’m pretty sure wokeness is why we hired NMP in the first place.

Therefore “wokeness” should be blamed.

I don’t really care what the women’s bball coach or players politics are. I just don’t want to ever hear abt them or hire someone to be “politically correct”.

I don’t care that there are problems with the WBB team, much less what the problems are. I suspect there are many others who share my sentiments-they probably just won’t say it. I’m impressed that so many people can actually name any players on the team-I couldn’t name a single one, but that’s probably just me.

Unfortunately, I don’t see the program coming back. How does it? It’s in shambles and it’s unlikely we get anyone close to Vic. Great coach. Great recruiter. Sure, we may could hire a great coach, but I think there’s been too much damage to the image to bring in top level players again due to the product we’re likely to see going forward.

She was/is woke and thought she would inherit a championship caliber team from the hard work of someone else. That is one of the principles of these woke individuals isn’t it? Benefit from the hard work of others?? Turns out that philosophy doesn’t work in society or in coaching.

Agree, that program has been Cohen’d and is doomed to the pit of irrelevance.

Agree on all except offering the job to Harris. There's a reason she's never been offered a head coaching job.

I agree with everything the OP said. But unfortunately this is correct too. The job was probably attractive last year because there was a lot of good young talent. All that is gone. It’s a rebuild now.

What did I miss that she did to make her be declared by some as woke? I don’t pay a ton of attention to her, so very likely I overlooked it or missed it. Can you please give examples?

I mean the odds of us hiring another Vic are slim but that has nothing to do with “image”.

It’s women’s basketball.

The image is surely better today than it was during fannins years or before which was basically no image or ******.

You are guessing as to the reason she was hired, and are confident that your guess is why she should be blamed.

Wow 17 that's some classic paindonthurt reasoning.

I don't track her on social media, but from what I did see last spring/summer/fall, it was no different overall than countless successful coaches of various college and pro teams.

It's comical that you think she was hired for the sole reason of being aware that racial injustice exists. <-- that's what woke means.

Wokeness killed the fan base, she and JC killed the team.

What did she do that was any different overall when compared to countless coaches of college and pro programs who were socially active this past year and still have fan support?

Are you saying the MSU fanbase can't accept a coach being aware of racial injustice and pushing for equality?

I think the wokeness deal is about bringing too much of that and the politics of it all into the attitude of the season. IMO it created a “she’s our friend” mentality. It’s OK to express then move on. Coach them and demand effort and execution. She did none of that. They didn’t respect her as a coach and realize she can’t make them better. That’s why they are leaving.

I have not heard the claim that one of the principles of wokeness is benefitting from the hard work of others.

To be clear- read this slowly if needed- literally any coach that took the job would have benefitted from the success and hard work of someone else. Whoever the coach was going to be, they were going to be in the same position- ready to benefit due to the hard work of someone else.
It could have been the most bootstrap conservative ever created- they would have had the same chance.

Your point sucks.

Read this real slowly....once you take over you have to continue that hard work and demand that from your players. Getting on Twitter and tick tok in your fresh as hail t shirts is kinda dumb if you are losers. But I wanna see examples of this....I want examples of this team losing....but hey...its just the women's basketball team. They have only been in the top ten for a few years consecutively. One of the most successful runs in State history. No big deal. Maybe we can find some 6'8" players that identify as female to transfer in

No, you are missing the point. She didn’t put in the hard work to field a competitive team. She had all the players to do so and should have been able to cruise to the sweet sixteen. She didn’t do what was needed. Her fresh as hail crap got in the way of her ability to be a leader to her team. Worst fall from grace in any MSU sport that I can remember.

And to be clear, you suck.

She’s woke but you can’t produce one single statement to back that up? If you’re so confident she’s woke, there had to be an event that made you feel that way. I’m not asking for hard proof. Just give me the general story that made you decide she was woke. I’m not saying she is or is not. But being liberal does not mean she is woke.

Whatever, nobody would hire Vic either as a P5 HC until we did because the one time he was given a shot at being a HC he totally sucked. So the fact that nobody else was offering her doesn't do much to convince me she wouldn't have worked. She certainly would have been better than the current situation we find ourselves in.

Yeah, I’d agree that if you come across a woke person it’s 100% of the time going to be a liberal. But that does not make every liberal woke. I’m sure there are lots of democrats that don’t give a **** if mr potato head is transgender.

I'll be really glad when the word "woke" goes out of style. Sick of seeing it 100 times a day all over social media.

No kidding. And most use it out of context, similar or how mr dawgs is doing. It’s clearly become the conservative equal to liberals calling everyone they disagree with a nazi or racist.

Just a random thought. Is it possible our players heard and caught more complaints about wokeness from higher ups in our boosters early in the year and they slowly checked out. The worse things got the less they cared because they knew they were not coming back. NMP left to rebuild, figure it out or get fired.
Just a thought because the disconnect was definitely there. Not necessarily my thoughts but another possible theory

I don’t think it had anything to do with wokeness or politics or anything remotely close to that.

It’s as simple as the players have zero confidence in NMP, just like all the fans. It’s not a complicated issue. I don’t know why we have some that want to make it complicated. She’s just not a good coach.

Sometimes players and coaches just don’t mesh. And a mass exodus will occur when you have a group of players that were a team and they won’t be able to play for a particular staff. Major upheaval last year in our staff resulted in major upheaval in team this year. Sad but actually simple. This team was brought in to play one way and they couldn’t get on board with the new staffs style and attitude

In all honesty it is imperative on a new coach to work and blend to the previous team while implementing new style. NMP didn’t, Moorhead tried to hard to fit in and Leach probably was between the other 2 mentioned. All 3 failed but I give Leach the best chance at actually pulling it off because he found mid ground and he also came in a situation of disarray due to Moorhead’s lack of discipline

Her politics are irrelevant when it comes to wins and losses. She’s done a great job of nosediving the program into the ground and making half the team leave in one season and it has zero to do with politics and to do with her in how she coaches and handles players. I think some of it is rotten attitudes on the team as well and a lot of butting heads. It’s a total disaster.
