I mean seriously, Cohen has got to do something. You couldn't have written this script any better if Ole Miss had secretly hired NMP to come in and dismantle our program.

It’s time we stop comparing NMP to Joe Moorhead.... it’s an insult to Moorhead.

Rule #1 of an aspiring young coach. NEVER take over a job where your predecessor was overachieving (especially on a national level) especially at a middling level (traditionally) program.

Literally the only way this works out is if you're a true name coach (and in that case it often means you are, in fact, a good coach, and that, plus your name, buys you some time).

I have no clue if this is NMP's fault or if Vic bailed because he knew it was about to get bad, as I don't pay attention to women's ball unless they are in the Final Four. But I know about football, and I know that the situation Mullen left wasn't nearly as good as it 'looked', especially beyond 2018. It may be the total opposite for the women's situation, because the facts are there are some young big time recruits there.

Football was winning consistently, Cohen hired a guy that wasn’t ready for the big time and absolutely killed the program. He fixed it with Leach thank god. Even if some of y’all don’t see it yet, Leach will be one of the best we’ve ever had. Women’s basketball was competing every year for the national title, he hires someone that wasn’t ready for the big time and now it’s dead too. Who does he fix it with? Does he even try to fix it? Does he get to torch two of our winning programs without any repercussions? I love Cohen to death and it’s cool that he’s our AD but there are two types of AD’s: coaches and businessmen. At a school like ours where we have to rely on first time head coaches and outside the box ideas for revenue to stay relevant, we need more of a business man which is what Strick was and it paid dividends. We have a national spotlight now because of the work that Strick and Mullen did. That’s the truth. Y’all don’t give Mullen enough credit for what he was doing behind the scenes here. Cut bait, hire a new ad that is from the Barnhart tree, and let them make a WBB hire. We have two we could get at any point and that’s the girl at UGA who is from meridian and Johnnie Harris. Call them and have them on a plane in 2 hours.

You and I have very different definitions of the word “fixed”.

Leach hasn’t don’t **** yet. He may very well turn it around. But that **** show 4-7 last year was an embarrassment outside of the opener and Mizzou. We barely beat Vandy and had a massive brawl in the bowl games against a G5 program. There ain’t nothing about 2020 football that makes me think it was “fixed”. In fact, I could probably argue that Leadh took it down further than any of the JoMo years.

The chances of any AD hiring a better coach than Mullen/Vic (in those 2 circumstances) was always low. Now, I do agree that Cohen's approach to the next hire(s) was stupid.

Correct, but we have a track record we can go off of with Leach. The record and the statistics are exactly on par for year one at every where else he’s been. Last year wasn’t an anomaly. It was what year one under Leach has looked like for the last 20 years. He may not turn it around but everything I’m reading and hearing from everyone around the program has told me that this spring is one of the most intense and competitive they’ve seen, including under Mullen. Players are actually progressing and strides are being made. Hopefully that means more wins. My point is that He didn’t go out and hire a nobody. At least with Leach we can say “ok, this is his year one everywhere else, this is his year two, by year three, his track record says we should be winning 9-10 games per year. Maybe we will, maybe we won’t but at least we have something to go off of. At the very least, Cohen had to go get a name to get us back in the national spotlight before we lost any amount of national relevancy, and he did that. Now he needs to do the same with WBB or he needs to follow her out the door.

I get that she could have made a huge jump as a sophmore. And I get that perhaps she could have been more effective under a different coach/system. But as it stands, close your eyes and throw a dart at the portal and you should be able to find someone that can give you those numbers.

Will it cost anything to get rid of NMP? If it doesn't you have to get rid of her. Then you hire someone for federal minimum wage. If it does, then you have to stick with her until her contract runs out. Even when we were winning, it was not a money maker. Don't make it worse by having to pay a buyout and new coach. Pay as little as possible and let's put it in baseball where we have a shot to win it all and football, which fund all of it.

I know nothing about WBB outside of watching Vic the last ~5 years... but why would either come here now? Georgia just had a great season and Harris was passed over last year. We are officially in rebuild mode, which is going to be a tough job for anyone at this point.

If I'm Harris - I'd tell Cohen to go piss up a rope.

Nahhh. Plenty of coaches follow a successful coach and build on it. It's very difficult to follow the guy that built a program, but even then, it's just difficult to live up to expectations, not to succeed. Miles was very successful following Saban but corndogs were never really happy with him because he couldn't get out of Saban's shadow. Ron zook did ok at Florida following Spurrier. His first year he beat a UGA team that finished ranked NO.3, beat UT team that was highly ranked at the time and went 6-2 in the SEC, but lost three games to ranked opponents (Miami (#1), Michigan #12, and FSU (#14)). He also had a loss to LSU (ranked at the time but cratered when Mauck was hurt) and Ole Miss (who finished 7-6). The next year, he lost to Miami (#5), Iowa (#8), Florida State (#10), Ole Miss (#14), Tennessee (#16) but beat LSU (#1), UGA (#6), and a 9-4 Arkansas team. Zook was set up to win, and he was fired more quickly becauseo f the expectations, but I think the real problem is he just wasn't a great coach, as shown by his stent at Illinois (although he did fine there compared to expectations).

And I think that's NMP's problem. Expectations were going to be killer regardless, but the bigger problem is she's just not that good of a coach.

Last football season was a throwaway year due to COVID. No Spring with a new staff, limited Fall, an all SEC schedule, no fans, etc. Give Leach a normal year in 2018 with the #1 defense in the nation like JoMo inherited, and I guarantee you never compare the two.

This will probably be unpopular since some of you love women’s sports, but has an SEC AD ever been on the hot seat due to a WBB and WSB hire? I’ve been curious about that considering the number of people piling on Cohen after the JoMo hire with “yeah, and he hired these two ****** women’s coaches too - so fire his ***”...

Cannizzaro was a great hire at the time (how do you predict what happened?). Hell, I checked a LSU board this morning and there are posters wanting him as a replacement for their current coach. JoMo was a flop, but he was the “next offensive up and comer” and it seemed like a good hire at the time.

You are clueless. Most coaches would much have a rebuilding job than maintain an established winner. Some of you just have a mental block in regards to this reality. Most times you hire from within to keep the 'culture' AND so you don't shoot one of your 'big hire' bullets following up a great coach, when chances are the team won't stay at that level.

I agree we should have hired Harris then, and if I was her, I wouldn't come either. But I've heard rumors that she turned us down too, no idea if that's true. Just a thought.

I have a feeling we'll be saying the same thing about Rick Ray comparisons if we let this go on another year or two.

The only difference between her and Rick Ray is that she has been a head coach (with some success) and she played at a high level.

She's not Rick Ray territory yet. But she's quickly getting there.

You really used Ron Zook to make your point? He was a disaster. It's almost as if Jeremy Foley knew that to attract a truly great coach again, he'd have to lower expectations from Spurrier level, so he just promoted Zook and let it naturally play out for 3 years, then went and got Urban. Which is what we should have done after Mullen - hire Grantham, let him roll (he'd have went 10-2 in 2018) and when he started sucking, can him for another real coach.

Les Miles is a decent comparison, but again, he had succeeded at Oklahoma State (not exactly Old Dominion level), and had proven he was ready.

Looks like she tweeted in December that she just loved playing for NMP, and happy birthday, etc. Explains how fake folks can be, and honestly I think she's probably the norm not the exception, I mean you see it all over facebook all the time.

I guess all that woke unity ended up breeding some entitled brats in the end. Shocking I tell you.

A lot could have happened between December and now. It’s not really earth shattering when you look at the body language of the players during the conference stretch.

I get what you're saying, but in the case of the two coaches referenced - I don't see either of them taking this job. Harris received a text from Cohen that he was hiring someone else (that was in the CL story last year). Consider half of north mississippi was pissed at the strangebrew folks for firing a part time girl via text - Cohen informed Harris she wouldn't be getting her dream job via text.

And the UGA coach had a top 15 team this year. I can't imagine a coach leaving after 5-6 years, coming off a very good season - to come here where we have less than half the roster returning. Although I did do a quick search and it appears they had 4 seniors starting, so maybe NeighborhoodDawg had a good point.

A lot being going from a top 5 or 10 team to in the bottom tier of the conference. Also losing confidence in your coach that she can turn it around.

I hope NMP does turn it around b/c I will always root for a State coach to succeed as long as they are with us.

Ron Zook didn't have trouble winning because he followed spurrier. He had trouble winning because he was Ron Zook. He did decent with Spurrier's players against really difficult competition for two years. He kept recruiting pretty decent, but Ron Zook eventually caught up to Ron Zook. Had he been a better coach, he wouldn't have needed to be a big name. Expectations would have probalby gotten him eventually unless he was another SPurrier. But he could have done something similar to what Miles did had he been a better coach.
