His Texas Ranger books are magnificent. Dead Man's Walk was not for faint of heart.

Horseman, Pass By — which was adapted to the Paul Newman film Hud - has been on my list and it looks like it’ll be read next month.

The novel’s name comes from Yeats’ poem Under Ben Bulben which I saw on his tombstone when I was in Ireland several years ago...

Great storyteller. A lot of my favorite American authors will probably be dying soon -- Cormac McCarthy, Thomas Pynchon, Don DeLillo (kind of hit or miss, I think)

McMurtry reminded me of Earnest Hemmingway. When you are reading their books you feel like you are hearing it from them sitting across the table from you. Their visual descriptions come to life in front of you. The Indian tortures in Dead Man's Walk almost gave me nightmares. True story teller as you said.
