Strange Brew making it worse

Silence can’t be quoted. This employer certainly needs to review its policies and make some major changes in the way it handles personnel matters. They may be taught a hard lesson by their public response to what should have been an internal and confidential matter. Naturally, our first inclination is to defend ourselves when accused. However, there is a right and wrong way to do it. SB chose the wrong way.

Nah this "drama" is no different than you can find at ANY restaurant in America. Stuff like this happens half a dozen times a year at every single restaurant everywhere. This story is very tame actually and quite boring already. Strange Brew ain't special and neither is their petty drama. Move on.

Meh, I disagree. I would never fire someone over a text, but they did not make this a public matter. They only responded publicly after getting blasted for something that they adamantly claim they didn't do. They have a right to defend themselves.

As for the employee. Mississippi is an at-will state. Nobody needs a reason to fire an employee, nor do they need to do so within specific protocols. The issue here is not that Strange Brew fired someone via text and then crapped the bed with how they are defending themselves on social media. The issue here is that an employee violated company policy and got fired (and even though via text, it was still done privately), and then they were put on blast on social media in a very public but very one sided way for doing it. Instead of going after strange brew, this mother should be asking her daughter what she did to get fired, and when the kid says all she did was eat a pastry, push back on that weak ********.

This is a great country when people step up and take responsibility for their own actions. It quickly becomes a ******** when people look to blame everyone else for their own shortcomings.

For all the bitching about being fired over text, I'll bet my bottom dollar that texting/private messaging is the PRIMARY form of communication for people in this age bracket. It might seen as informal or "cold" to you, but that's how that generation communicates. Most of them can't be bothered with a real phone call. Of course they'll ***** about getting fired over text because they know it will garner a lot of attention and sympathy from "the olds".

Run your business as you want. That's the beauty of running your own business. If you suck at it, you won't be in business long. Strange Brew has proved they are pretty damn good at it.

I have no opinion on any of this, but the thread made me have a dream last night that I went to Strange Brew, where there was a very somber mood, and I tipped $5 on a cup of black coffee.

Vince McMahon would fire guys in the middle of the ring in front of 50 million people after making them join the "kiss my *** club." Social media didn't have a problem with that.**

I’d want to make a statement because of the doctored emoji text. If that didn’t happen - I agree.

Might as well address both if you are making one.

Addressing the doctored emoji text was probably good and necessary. They shouldn't have gotten into the firing situation. Too many people just aren't going to understand any firing because they live in fantasy land and you don't want to look like you're trashing former employees (and definitely don't want to admit in writing to wrong doing by your former employees, as you likely are responsible for any wrongdoing). Just state that employees are given the reasons that they are terminated and that Strangebrew doesn't publicly disclose those reasons and doesn't expect terminated employees to publicly disclose those reasons. Everybody, even most of the people having fun joining an internet mob, understands that fired employees aren't going to provide the full picture of why they were terminated. THere's no benefit to fact checking them. Just let the mob die down on its own.

Definitely shouldn't point out that they give staff free drinks every shift. Basically nobody other than owners in retail is going to think that is a perq worth mentioning.

This is why Viktor Frankl wanted a Statue of Responsibility on the West Coast.

Freedom, however, is not the last word. Freedom is only part of the story and half of the truth. Freedom is but the negative aspect of the whole phenomenon whose positive aspect is responsibleness. In fact, freedom is in danger of degenerating into mere arbitrariness unless it is lived in terms of responsibleness. That is why I recommend that the Statue of Liberty on the East Coast be supplemented by a Statue of Responsibility on the West Coast.1

I don’t know about laws protecting businesses in MS but here in TN, the kids taking to Twitter passing the ‘shopped images as authentic SB texts and thus smearing their reputation would be in legal trouble by trying to falsely interfere with their livelihood.

I agree that MS is an at will state. An employer does not have to have a reason to fire an employee with some exceptions. There are folks out there looking to get something for nothing and we never know what they will accuse us of doing. This whole thing is way out of proportion and without a public response it would have just gone away in my view. I love SB and know it’s owners and family. It is my hope that this fired employee moves on. You are correct that they have a right to defend themselves, but do it in a courtroom and not on social media.

It is an at will state, yet it is incredibly smart for businesses to not just fire people without well documented cause. This has been shown true in countless unemployment cases(in multiple other at will states. i admittedly havent seen MS mentioned) when the courts support the employee's grievances.

Apparently a pastry is a well documented cause.
