Most of the time it works. We have had several hits in to the shift. Every now and then some one can place hit away from it.

Lemonis say we’re 19-4 this year using the shift. These SEC hitters are gonna be better than that against our shift. Personally, I don’t like that **** at all, but I’m not gonna complain about coach using it. Just doesn’t matter that much too me. He also said the MLB is trying to get rid of it.

The shift is frustrating when it does not work but mostly it works.

Even when someone does bunt and get on that’s not always the worst outcome. If you got a big time power hitter up you’re taking the bat out of his hand by letting him bunt.

This. The shift works way more than it doesn’t. There have been so many balls that would have found a hole between SS and 3B or up the middle that have gobbled up and no one thinks about again. Those don’t stick in your brain as much as when a batter beats the ****. And since your usually your shifting against someone who pulls the ball all the time and that type of profile usually comes with some power - so to let them exchange those XBHs for the occasional bunt single and let’s go.

Not a huge fan of it in general but as long as it’s legal I’m fine with using using it to our advantage.

The majors have much more data on hitters - I’ve wondered whether we really have enough on college hitters.

That’s true, but while it takes some stats a long time to stabilize (Ex: batting average) others become reliable far quicker. Pull% only takes 30 balls in play before it becomes a reliable metric that can be applied predictively. So from opening day anyone with regular playing time from the previous season will have more than enough data, and new comers with regular ABs would have enough info to know if they’re shiftable by conference play.

Grant land article where I got the stabilization rate for Pull% - https://grantland.com/features/mlb-2014-situational-hitting-challenges-beating-the-shift/

Trying to get rid of it bc it's damn effective. Think about that. Now, mlb has a ton more scouting than college, so the shifts aren't as effectively planned in college.

I do too. However, you are talking to the section of our fanbase that would tell Jesus himself that his hair is too long.

if the new shift rules, larger bases & the pitcher step-off rule that effectively ends the left-handed pitchers pitch/pickoff move are all adopted permanently, then baseball will definitely get more scoring.

Some people only remember the occasional time the shift doesn’t work. They forget the numerous times where it saves us hits/runs, including once or twice last night.

And BTW, when you force a LH power hitter to try bunting for a hit rather than pull the ball, you take his power away. That is the shift working.
