why did Eastern Michigan pitch to Logan Tanner?

Bottom of ninth, nobody out, runners at first and third, tie ball game . . . and the next batter is Logan Tanner.

If the runner at third scores, then the game is over.

Why not intentionally walk Tanner to set up a force out at home?

I would have put Tanner on and taken my chances with Hatcher, Cumbest and Forsythe.

I thought about this. I guess they figure they can cut down the guy at third (they are gonna have to do that no matter what but this involves a tag obviously) and then its just first and second with 1 out. Then you can play the infield back without the risk of a runner scoring on a groundball. You also take away losing the game on a sac fly with one out And you also may be able to throw someone out on a single. I can see it both ways.

My guess is right on right advantage, and would have walked Hatcher next to set up the force

Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.

You don't want to have the bases loaded with nobody out in that situation. Everything else is still in play and the walk off walk is on the table too. The marginal advantage of having a force out at home does not make up for the BB risk.

This is it exactly. With nobody out, you still have 3 outs you still need to get. It’s not 1 or 2 batters you need to get in a row, it’s 3 without walking someone.
