Can anyone explain to me how we drop 6 spots in RPI after tonight and TSUN moves up 20in one night? OK, we played Grambling, I get it, but they played Alcorn! They got friends in high places. I suspect their journalism-school friends.

RPI is totally useless until about April. It takes everybody playing 20 or so games for things to normalize, it’s incredibly volatile this early in the year.

How many times do we have to go through this? RPI is 2/3 based on SOS. SOS is established over time. This happens between 1/2 and 1/3 as quickly in baseball as basketball because the SOS sample size only grows with additional opponents rather than just additional games. RPI won't even be worth looking at in baseball until the start of conference play.

Also if we take care of business in conference play our RPI will take care of itself.

What all of these folks said, plus:

Rpi does not exist in a vacuum for one team. Other teams can play games that make them jump you. It may be more about them than us; especially this early.

Just as you can count on the dogwood trees to bloom in the early spring, you can count on State fans to start complaining about baseball RPI way too early.

Yes, it is the journalists from Ole Miss that are artificially inflating their RPI in early March. I’m emailing this thread to Sankey. Hopefully something will be done soon.

1. Its too early and 2. Alcorn has a 1.000 win percentage right now Grambling has a 0.00% win percentage.

RPI is also a broken formula in a sport like college baseball where teams can have significantly different numbers of games played.

Suppose we have a team that plays Alabama, Auburn, and Florida. There's another team that plays Alabama, Auburn, Florida, and Grambling. Which team has the harder stretch?

According to RPI, it would be the team that only played three games, even though the team that played four games played the same opponents and played an additional game. You cannot reasonably say that team with fewer games played a harder schedule.
