No one really knows. You listen to some financial experts and they say $500,000 isnt unrealistic. Then some will say it could tank and become pennies. I had a friend of mine suggest it to me back in 2017 when it was around $4,000. I new nothing about it and decided to pass at the time... Shows how smart I am on the subject. I put some money in last year so I'm just enjoying the ride for now

If your altcoins haven’t at least conservatively 5x’d since last summer (10x probably the floor if you were holding defi stuff), you were holding the wrong altcoins. Everything has gone up. Some sectors just more than others.

This doesn’t apply to bitcoin as it’s a relatively safer, less volatile, potentially long term investment.

250k BTC is a high-end target. That is far from a sure thing. Possible but not close to a sure thing. Most conservative targets have 100-150k

I eagerly await the day when the lightbulb turns on and I understand why there is value in any of this. I will get to join in on the fun at that point, which will be with any of the other remaining laggards and skeptics. At that point I will be starting a marathon when everyone else is already at mile 20.

I am purely a novice on crypto...

and i downloaded Coinbase about 2 weeks ago.....it opened a new world.....one of the neat things is some of the alt coins offer it in 'free' money if you watch a 2 min video....watch 3 of the videos and now you have $10 in that crypto....the $10 is not the point, but the learning is significant, not just on that particular crypto product.

the phrase "globalism" is the first thing that comes to mind learning about crypto......and that train is coming and no person, nor any political ideology is going to stop it. just my 2 cents

I completely appreciate the value and idea of crypto, BTC especially. Its scarcity and the future utility as more companies accept it in a global economy all make reasonable sense. My hesitation would be completely around the political risk. It will never become a currency. The exact reason crypto currency is attractive, is the exact reason major economies and in particular their central banks would want to torpedo its success. The store of value argument falls victim to the same problem. Gold is the store of value most nations and their central banks prefer.

All of the hubub lately is about Tesla buying up $1.5bn. Which is a lot, but its still less than 8% of its cash position. So if the wild man Musk is at 8% and the ultra conservative Buffett is at 0%. I think most of us should fall somewhere in between at most with our portfolio allocations. Below is a link to some of Buffett's quotes about crypto.. I forget how funny he is sometimes... While I am probably not as bearish as he is on crypto, this awful funny for a 90 year old billionaire to say.

"Bitcoin has been used to move around a fair amount of money illegally. The logical move from the introduction of bitcoin is to go short suitcases because the money that was taken in suitcases from one country to another - suitcases will probably fall off in demand. You can look at that as the economic contribution of bitcoin to the society."

I know the natural instinct for many is to bag on Buffett in times like these... Hell I was guilty of it 1999 as dipshit college kid trading internet stocks on Scottrade, everyone thought Buffett was washed up as we blew by Berkshire Hathaway's returns. Even the WSJ was knocking him... Well 2 years later after we had all lost our asses, old Buffett was up 113%.

I'm not a value investor per se.. In fact I still prefer growth stocks and Bill O'Neil over value and Buffett. But I will never talk **** about Buffett again. He's the greatest investor of all time and should always be respected.

Crypto stimulus in the form of airdrops (token rewards to specific wallet addresses) far exceeded any government checks this year. If you used decentralized exchanges on ethereum to make any trades last year, you probably cleared $10k USD in rewards.

The largest decentralized exchange Uniswap.org gave any user who had ever tried to use it (even if your transaction failed) a 400 UNI token airdrop late last summer. This was done based on ethereum wallet address so if you interacted with more than 1 wallet, you got several drops (which is common as additional wallets are free and allow better organization and security). 400 UNI is currently around $8000.

If you every used the popular decentralized exchange aggregator 1inch.exchange for at least $20 of volume (basically searches multiple other decentralized exchanges in order to give you the best rate on your trade) you got at least 600 1inch tokens per wallet you used (this scaled with increase volume, 600 was the minimum) when they released their token around Christmas. 600 1INCH tokens is currently around $3000.

This is basically the equivalent of Uber or Netflix giving stock shares out as a reward for their best customers.

I am totally ignorant in this area. Every place I have visited on the net wants to sell me stuff, not tell me why I should buy it, or even what it is.

For some reason I keep thinking about Holland a couple of hundred years ago, when tulips (that's right, the flower) were selling for mega-bucks, and then the bottom fell out. Anyway, I'm too old to try this, so y'all have fun.

Ethereum over $1,700. I’m kicking myself for not building a mining rig last summer when you could still buy graphics cards.

I have a friend who plays a lot of games on his computer and I dont know if this is correct or not but he says you basically cant find a high end graphics card right now and if you do have one you can flip it for 2x or more.

The value of any currency is based on belief at the most fundamental level. A bank loans me 200k to buy a house at a 4% interest rate with the firm belief that, once paid, they will have more USD than before and that it will be still be the dominant currency, etc. We believe the USD will have utility and a store of value. In return I put my credit and or collateral on the line. If I cant pay I lose my house and my credit suffers.

Ok but let's just say people DID believe BTC or some crypto would retain its utility and store of value too. And let's say I have 250k worth of bitcoin today. Instead of using a centralized bank, there is decentralized system where hundreds or thousands of people all over the world, regardless of culture, language or local currency, are willing to hold my BTC at, let's say, a 10% interest rate. I get 200k up front. I buy my house in cash. Now I owe 220k over the course of 30 years. If I pay it I get my BTC or crypto back, hopefully it has even appreciated. Now I have my BTC and my house. But let's say I cant pay it back - I lose my BTC, my collateral, but I keep my house and my credit.

This is my understanding, DeFi is like crowdsourcing, and it is very exciting to me. BUT it is based on some assumptions, namely that I can find enough people who believe what I believe, viz. that in 15 to 30 years BTC will retain utility and store of value.

See this link for a process like this that is up and running. Can these rates last? Is there a way to tokenize stocks and make crypto banks a decentralized version of what we have now that works better for the everyman? Very difficult but exciting questions.

Perhaps I have some fundamental misunderstanding about this and if so I would like to hear some other opinions, but this seems to be the advantage of a 'global' currency that people are excited about. It's a way to pool resources and avoid the trappings of traditional finance, though with that there are consequences and considerations that must be worked out in great detail. I think this is where we are going, but there are a lot of obstacles that require serious thought. I am not as bullish as some here but I am not bearish in the least. These ideas are not new but the technology making it very possible, as far as I know, is.

I will edit to add that there are other projects I am very excited about, some that are more environmentally friendly and are focused on bringing DeFi to other parts of the world, some focused on speed and low transaction cost between borders, some focused on absolute anonymity, some focused on bringing real world data to the blockchain for purposes of payroll, inventory, etc. Etc. Blockchain technology will not be going away, that is as obvious to me today as it should've been to anyone when the internet hit the mainstream - even if the warnings of a dot com bubble had truth.

As Beretta said, globalism is coming for better and/or worse, and nothing can stop it.

This is an often referenced article from 2018. It is a good long form argument for the value of bitcoin: https://vijayboyapati.medium.com/the-bullish-case-for-bitcoin-6ecc8bdecc1

It can go either way. I believe in BTC and crypto projects generally speaking but a certain amount of skepticism needs to be applied when anyone is saying "X investment just hit its all time high but there is still time to get in!"
