We aren’t great, but part of the problem is who is shooting our free throw attempts. Molinar and Stewart are 72% and 79%, respectively. The problem is, they’re shooting more jump shots than other G’s in today’s game. As a result, JDavis and Molinar have close to the same total FTs on the season.

Also, Cam Matthews is 2-17. That’s not good.

Devils advocate: I dont mind trading missed FTs for getting a lot of paint points bc Tolu is the primary issue. If he is missing bc he is getting a bunch of touches and points im ok with that

I can’t believe that a college basketball player, especially a Power 5 Division 1 player, is 2-17 in free throws. I would imagine I could go outside now, close my eyes and make 2-17. Incredible that someone could be that horrible a free throw shooter.

They call them free for a reason. No excuse not to make 75%.

Only 50 out of 345 teams in d1 are at or above 75% from the line.
So about 15% of schools meet your expectation.

I dont disagree with your general view.

I think Howland has said it’s on the players to put in the extra time to practice free throws. Not enough time in regular practice to work on them.

Missed free throws have already cost this team a victory or two and will cost them more going forward. You’d think the coach would address this glaring weakness.

Then a minute before practice is over have them start shouting FT’s
if you make 7 out of 10 , go get in the shower.
If you don’t, you stay there until you do make them.
Have the player or players and managers turn the lights off when they leave.
Pretty simple.

Yeah, 75% for team shooting free throws is fairly elite.

However, you'd hope to have at least 2 players that shoot 75%+ . . . and those 2 players should control the ball and shoot all the free throws when the other team starts fouling. (This strategy is obvious, right?)

A more realistic expectation for our team free throw shooting is 67%.

Correct. It’s not something you can even coach, anyway. Strictly a personal repetition thing. It’s something guys should practice on their own going all the way back to Jr. High. Unfortunately, most players would rather spend that extra time working on dunks or 3 pointers.

Howland has recently said that they practice free throws and each player has to stay until he hits 7 out of 10. They are hitting 70 percent in practice but it is not carrying over to games. It is a mental thing at this point.

Great idea. Unfortunately, explicitly a violation of NCAA practice time rules (unless they actually did make 7 out of 10 in 1 minute or less).

All expenses paid

I haven't watched our team play at all, so I have no idea what our individual players' free throw shooting routine/form looks like.

Regardless, if I could work with each individual player for 15 minutes each day AND if the player would follow my advice, then I could certainly improve our team's free throw shooting.

Making free throws is not hard, if you have a good routine and good shooting form.

Surely somebody on our basketball coaching staff knows this and is working with our players, right?

How is this a violation if they do it on their own with no coaches there “coaching” ?

Its only not a violation if its completely voluntary on behalf of the players. If it starts before practice is over, it’s not voluntary. Even if it starts after practice is over but its still at the direction of the coaches, it counts towards the practice time for that week. Otherwise, coaches would take advantages of such loopholes for far more than just free throws.
