This loss was directly on the players. He had us with a good lead and then they quit running their offense and started playing street ball and quit playing defense. Next thing you know we are down by one.

At the Sanderson. He should be fired for the possession at the end of OT
Exactly. So with :17 your play is to have 4 guys stand around and have Iverson shoot a contested 3 falling out of bounds??? Horrible. He has to get in the faces of these guys sometimes and push them. Or get a T just once because the Refs are screwing us.

But that’s my point. He has to get in their face and shut that **** down. Take control and demand better.

You cant high ball screen with Ado there. They dont about him so they are going to leave him bc they can play 4 on 5 for 4-5 seconds. You screen with Johnson there.

just an offensive collapse. Stand around for the last 6 minutes and really just hope stewart and molinar can create.

Surely we can find a Musselman type hire from a G5 school and a guy with some energy that actually knows how to draw up some offensive plays and can light a fire under his players. Howland is a joke. Any big game or any moment where the game is on the line or a big turning point in a season this program finds away to choke it away. Just garbage iso basketball with Molinar and Stewart with everyone else watching. Even the defense did a lot of watching.

I know one thing - I will not watch another MSU / Kentucky basketball game until either Howland or Cal leave.

Yep - he’s between a rock and a hard place. You cannot depend on the post so you take a chance with the back court playing streetball

It's my fault. Every time in the last 15 years that I tried to watch mens bb team, we lose. I'm not kidding.
Today was the first time I tuned in, in 2 years, and we were up 8, and lead dwindled every moment I watched.
Leason learned. Won't happen again.

Ot : your wonder woman review was spot on

So after the couple of timeouts Howland called, the players continued to fumble through the offense. At that point, it's not a player issue, it's a coach issue. What is he teaching these guys?

15 seconds left and Molinar wastes 9 of it walking the ball up the court and then shooting a contested, forced shot? Is that Molinar's fault? Perhaps. But what did Howland tell him during the timeout before it happened?

If they're running what Howland is telling them to do - that's on Howland because it hasn't worked - for six years.
If they're doing what they want and ignoring what Howland wants them to do - that's also on Howland because we have a coach the players don't respect.

Either way it's a bad look for the coach.

I mean how about a penetrate kick out 3 at least? They blocked about 30 of our shots tonight but at least take it to the rack and hope for a rebound if you miss.

You know, they have these things called motion offenses - and there are many different variations of them. In a motion offense with a simple back pick, you can usually get a good shot attempt at the basket or draw a foul without relying on your post player. They also have these things called pick-and-rolls which would make it easier for our post guys to score in mismatch situations.

We occasionally run a couple of different motion sets, and we occasionally utilize the pick and roll. When we do, we usually get a positive, or at least an acceptable result. When you decide to abandon that down the stretch, it's negligent.

It's not this difficult.

This a million times. Pretty much nothing good can happen with Ado high in that spot.

I agree with most in this thread. Just an all around collapse. I think when Cal got bounced, they relaxed. That horrid alley oop attempt for no damn reason was the point I think it was over. All that said, I really like this team. And we are young. If Howland doesn’t have them as a 5 seed at least next year, it’s a failure.

Apparently, running a set play requires more intelligence than Mississippi State Basketball Players have. Oh well. What else is new. Another basketball season, another loss to Kentucky.

We have Alabama to beat State every year in football, Kentucky to beat State every year in basketball, and Vanderbilt to beat.... oh wait that rivalry is a little more balanced.

So when Molinar did that number in our last possesion and the first thing I saw Coach doing was ask him, "What the hell was that?" It's Howland's fault that Molinar didn't drive the ball?

Man, I agree Howland makes some bad choices but it's like you guys seriously think he gathers them around at time out and says, "So what do you guys think we should do?"

That was on our seniors tonight... oh wait, Ado is our only upperclassman. My bad.

If we had ONE post guy who could score we would be trouble for teams. They play good defense and rebound but they stopped doing both of those things when Kentucky got close. They quit passing the ball on offense.

The biggest beef I had with Howland was taking time off the clock instead of running the offense in the last two minutes of regular time and the overtimes.

That is when we miss a captain on the court who wants the ball and can create. Molinar is close but not there yet and really is more of a shooter. I thought it might be Stewart but he couldn't get open late.

We also screened way, way too high. You have to get the ball closer to the top of the key so that the screen guy is a threat to the basket. I doubt very seriously it is drawn up that way since Ado usually does it and is our best rebounder.

I can agree with this somewhat but we also have a group of players who play awesome for most of the game then just go into a a shell and you can't put that all on Howland. We don't have a go to guy yet. I hope Stewart can be that guy but he just disappeared down the stretch and I seriously doubt Howland said, "Don't throw the ball to him!"

Molinar and Stewart are shooter. Great mid range and 3 pointers at times but we don't have anyone like the RAT tonight who just can take a game over.

Add that we need to figure out how to play defense on the RAT or do something to mess up his game.

Lots to learn.

Not saying the loss is not on him. I didn’t watch any of it. But there are more ways to get your point across and motivate someone than yelling or getting in someone’s face.

Just 10 Free Throws at the end of practice when you're dead tired...however many shots you miss is your punishment...if you miss 3 then you have to run the bleachers 3 times (around the court and up and down every step)...if you miss 5 then you have to run 5...etc.

This is what my high school coach did to us, as a result we practiced Free Throws on our own time to get better and we figured out quickly who our best Foul shooters were / and knew they should have the ball at the end of the game. Also taking the shots at the end of practice when tired and the pressure of knowing a miss would mean extra running simulated game conditions - exhaustion & pressure.

When this is a problem year after year with different rosters, you sure can put it on Howland. Our offensive game plan consists of the following ... 1) the weave motion offense 2) the stagnant 4 corners and create your own shot one on one 3) the force it down low to a not so skilled big man who promptly gets doubled and can't find an open man because no one knows what to do or how to move without the ball.

Tolu gets half his shots blocked and misses the other 50%
