Wow, I read the part of there being no place to hold the NCAA minimum average 15,000 fans for Hawaii to maintain FBS status. They’re not even going to begin construction on Aloha’s replacement until 2023.

Surely, the NCAA will give them a waiver for 2022 and 2023.

This is what happens when you put materials that rust next to the Pacific Ocean

In fairness, it did last 45 years in that environment. Didn’t one of the Florida schools, ucf?, recently condemn part of their stadium after only a few years?

What were their options 45 years ago?

That’s not snark. I’m in neither construction nor structural engineering, so I’m legitimately asking.

I can't imagine how expensive it's going to be to rebuild a stadium in Hawaii. What's the cost adder for being in the middle of the pacific? 30%? 50%?

Their options at that time might have been more limited considering that they wanted a multipurpose stadium for football and baseball (The Hawaii Islanders were a AAA team). But now though...

They should make extensive use of aluminum bleachers, like the University of North MS and Weedeater Bowl Stadium have.

But wasn't it torn to make room for a nicer stadium and not because the building couldn't continue to be functional?

it was due for an overhaul of some of the MEP systems ... main reason if I remember correctly was Arthur Blank wanting some ownership in a new stadium

Didn't our engineers invent some kind of new cement when we built the new endzone seating? Isn't it lighter and cheaper than what used to be used?

Also, am I misremembering but doesn't Aloha Stadium shift from football to baseball by just flipping a switch?

Also, the tornado that ruined the tournament for us did some pretty good damage to it.

Our last visit to Hawaii for baseball was 89 I believe and I can't remember Jim Ellis saying if the games were played in the football/baseball combo stadium or the smaller on campus stadium. I remember Hawaii was pretty good in baseball at that time though.

The thing that will really be missed is the flea market that sells everything imaginable underneath that stadium. It' kind of sad to see it go.. it was a part of my youthful memories. I was stationed in Honolulu at Ft. Shafter some years ago.

That article was updated and corrected to say “The Stadium Authority has been clear the moratorium on new events within the stadium bowl are not related to structural issues. Rather, this difficult decision has been made due to economic conditions stemming from COVID-19 safety restrictions as noted in the release.”

The big problem in Hawai'i is the price of real estate there has sky rocketed. Too many folks want to live there and not enough space to go around. I don't know if UH has room on campus for such a structure but as mentioned, the cost is going to be high. There is currently a building boom on Oahu which makes construction materials scarce and expensive on top of everything having to be shipped in from other places.

Was21 mentioned the flea market and right now that's about the best thing going on at the stadium. If you ever visit Oahu go to the flea market (twice a week - Sat. is the best day) and get all your touristy junk. Fellow Hawai'ian shirt lovers this is where to go.

I've been fortunate in that I've been to Oahu a dozen or so times and have been to 1 Pro Bowl, 1 college game, (Hawai'i vs BYU, Hawai'i won), countless flea markets and have seen The Rolling Stones there. Hope they are able to build a suitable replacement.
