I’ll be the first to admit I was surprised they went back into lockdown. They are still at less than half of where they were in the spring.

.View attachment 18967

At least at the moment, deaths seemed to have peaked.

View attachment 18968

They have also gone from the top 5 in deaths per million down to 24th. In the mean time, places like Argentina, Peru. Etc who have been locked down like crazy for months have rocketed past Sweden and Brazil. Japan and South Korea are not immune either if you want to go look at their recent charts.

Doesn’t look like other than a few Island nations that can close their borders, it seems like it is a matter of time for most countries.

Their case load is higher than ever. The rest will follow.

My Brother In Law and my Niece had the Covid , but my Nephew and Sister in Law didn’t catch it... they all live in house together, but really didn’t stay distant from each other, no mask, etc.... My Brother caught Covid and stayed in separate area of house from wife, both wore mask... different bedrooms, bathrooms, living area etc... she caught Covid a week later.

This is so true, but I don’t believe in total lockdowns but some type of mandates have to be imposed. In MS alone positive cases are averaging almost 2k per day and IMO Tate has not taken enough steps and to slow to react. But again just my opinion.

What type of mandates would you suggest? He would you suggest they enforce your suggested mandates? What would you suggest the penalty be for failing to follow your suggested mandates?

Not trying to be a jerk, really. I am interested in what mandates people think would be effective.

My wife is in the medical field. They wear head to toe gowns, safety glasses, a N95 mask and a clear shield. She got it from a patient and brought it home to me.

This all day. Just because I don't believe the dumb piece of underwear cloth you are wearing on your face doesn't work, doesn't mean I think the virus isn't real. But I'm damn sure tired of people telling me how many lives I will save if I wear that underwear on my face. How about you mask wearing freaks stop texting and driving and then I'll start wearing a mask.

If you don't want to wear a mask for indoor public places right now, stay at home. It's that simple.

So you put your masks on to walk inside, and once you go in the door and sit down to order, then everyone takes their masks off to drink and eat. And then they put them back on to walk out the door and if there is no one close by they take the mask off to walk to their car. Must be quite effective.

No PPE is 100% effective. The N95 gets its name from how effective it filters. It filters about 95%. If it didn't work that well every healthcare worker in the world would have had it by now. ANY reduction helps. The more people that wear it, the more effective it is. Mask mandates should be backed up with progressive fines. Don't pay them, you go to jail.

First didn't take your comments or questions as being a jerk and sincerely hope you and your wife are doing okay. So starting with Tate, IMO he waited until the numbers were already escalating before issuing a total county mask mandate when you could clearly see the positive numbers increasing quickly prior to last weeks mandate. Now do I believe masks work, to some degree. I wonder what the numbers would be without anyone wearing them. So they do afford some protection.
He ordered public attendance reductions for indoor athletic events, he could've done the same with restaurants, gyms and bars, a percentage of their capacity. Are any of these a cure all for contacting Covid, of course not, all they are is a mechanism to hopefully control the numbers. My biggest complaint with him was his timing, especially when the medical field was asking him to step in and help and he did nothing.

Indoor dining is sketchy for most places right now. I think the idea is every little bit helps.

I'm over 60, single and like my own cooking. Have done some drive thru and curbside but have eaten inside only once or twice since March.

I was mainly talking about gas stations, grocery stores, big box stores, hardware stores, etc.

You are the problem, not me. If you're scared of getting the China virus, you stay home.
If you aren't scared of getting it then you don't think much of the vulnerable around you. I'm not risk free myself, but I'm not as high of a risk as most of the people closest to me. MY biggest fear is not dying from it, it's surviving it but passing it on to even one of them that doesn't survive it. That would be awful to have to live with. "First, do no harm."

Are you a doctor? Because that statement, “first do no harm” used to be the Medical Field’s mantra. But then Doctors starting doing abortions and assisted suicides and that mantra went out with the dinosaurs.

.

This is interesting. It would make sense that covid would spread in restaurants, but the head of the Memphis restaurant association, or something like that, was on the news when the health department recently rolled out tighter restrictions on restaurants. According to this guy, there has been no evidence of someone catching it at a restaurant. Restaurants are having to keep everyone’s info in order to assist in contact tracing.

Hey Ron. Just as an FYI. I know you like accuracy. Sweden is reporting deaths differently... They take the deaths from today's reports and add it back to the actual date of death so it's up to 2 weeks behind. Most other countries take all deaths coming in and add them to that days number, no matter the actual date of death. A little difficult to explain so I will post a link.

https://ourworldindata.org/covid-sweden-death-reporting

I was curious about this the other day and took a screenshot. The death total was 7514 on the 14th and is now at 7893. That's 379 "reported Covid19 deaths" in 3 days or 126 a day, but they are recording them back up to a few weeks.

If we revist this topic in 2 weeks we will see today's death total is much higher than now and probably higher than the current high in early December. Unfortunately I think even with better care and treatment options, it has gotten worse for Sweden than it was in the Spring and that's likely why the lockdowns are happening.

Thanks Joe Lee. It looks like they set up their chart as date of death instead of date of report. We have that option in Georgia to do either with our charts. DOD is a better indicator, but typically is inaccurate within 2 weeks due to lag in reporting.

The ICU bed usage does not have a lag and looks to have hit a plateau. Of course now it really doesn’t matter in the discussion since they have implemented measures similar to many parts of Europe. We will no longer know if they would have done better or worse with fewer interventions.

I appreciate the info btw.

Do you think of the obedient drivers around you while you're texting and driving? My family is not going to Christmas with my parents or my wife's parents to try and keep them safe. I don't want to get anybody sick but to act like this is the bubonic plague is ridiculous. You've allowed the media to brainwash you. Our family has decided to stay away from our family members that are more vulnerable but I'll be damned if I'm going to live my life in fear like some of you.

There is a test for flu, and a test for Covid. They're not the same disease, and Covid is much more contagious than flu.

On a positive note, apparently masks work for flu too - it's a very light flu season (according to local experts deal with data, not solely my opinion). Even after Covid is gone, we may be masking against the flu for the coming years. Asians have been doing it for a long time.

Asians mask because their air is the most polluted in the world.

I had to check the date on this thread because for a minute there, it felt like it was June thru September again with all the rambling about masks.

50 gonna 50.

I'm willing to bet over half of the replies in this thread are from people not in Mississippi.

You're insufferable.

My child's speech therapist did NOT test positive for COVID, but her young daughter has it (fever, and all). The only explanation I can think of is that the mom has had it without symptoms and has the antibodies. Seems like this thing is way too contagious to not share it amongst a household when one person gets it without strict quarantining.

Speaking of strict quarantings (it works). Both my mom and dad had it. But my younger brother, who still lives there, didn't catch it. He did not get close to them for 10 days, only staying in his room essentially, when he was home.
Everyone has different levels of immune systems. Some people may have a better ability to fight it off. That and I think some people may have already had it and never knew it. My sister was coughing her head off last December with body aches and went to doctor and got tested for flu and it came back negative. They couldn't figure out what was wrong. She coughed so much she pulled muscle in chest. She ended up getting on an inhaler and finally got better even though she still had a residual cough 3 or 4 months after. I bet she had COVID and didn't know it. I think it was here before everyone thought it was. I have been fortunate to not get it as of yet. In April I started taking Zinc, Vitamin C supplements and in September I added Vitamin D3 to the mix. I think it definitely helps at least to lessen what you get If you ever get sick. I have felt like I have had a sickness coming on several times and it goes away a day later. If anyone is thinking of adding these supplements, don't just get a Centrum Mulit-Vitamin and call it a day. Go to Bulksupplements.com or LifeExtension.com and buy the supplements you need and take them individually. You are able to control how much you get of preferred supplements.

Obviously I am skeptical of masks, but I tend to question everything and always have (drove my parents crazy) but I have been open to arguments and have my mind changed more than once. I just don’t see the data supporting it. Most of the examples that have been used have been retracted. The 1083 counties that had lower hospitalizations due to masks? Retracted. Arizona? Pulled. New Mexico “following the science”? Nope. And of course there is this. https://twitter.com/sadie_luck/status/1338602827170590721?s=21

“Things would be worse.” Well, the cool thing is we don’t have to guess. We have states with no mandates so we can see “how much worse it would be.” AL, GA and MS are great comparators. Since GA does not have a mandate, (even if you believe there is a lot of voluntary use) they would HAVE to be doing much worse right?

View attachment 18976FL and CA? Even if you bypass cases because of testing differences, FL should be doing much worse in hospitalizations right? Nope. Gulf/West coast of Florida should be getting creamed right? (It seems like the old normal down there) Nope. Dade which makes of 13% of the population is accounting for 25% of the cases in the state, mandate and all. . ND and SD? ND has a mandate and SD does not. Check out their charts. Almost identical. It “should” be much worse in SD right?

“Masks are the reason for lower Flu cases.” Maybe? Social distancing, hygiene could all be playing a part IF cases really are lower. Who knows? We aren’t seeing a spike of Flu in non mandated states and it has not made the mask wearing countries in Asia avoid awful flu outbreaks the last few year. Is part of it because we aren’t testing for the flu? None of the people I know who had “flu like symptoms” have gone to the doctor to get tested. They have gone to get COVID tested or just assumed they had it and never went to the doctor at all since they were told to stay at home and isolate. In past years they would have been a the Doc in the Box getting a script for Tamiflu. Just like with my coworker who exposed me to the Rona, he was “assumed” COVID without ruling anything else out even though his symptoms were consistent with the Flu.

This was not that long ago. If you look at the charts, it seems like the “science” might have been better in Feb than July.

My college days, the pill was popular, no AIDs yet and it was 18 for beer. Timing is everything.

But you have a point.
So you're a baby boomer. And since you're being a maskhole, I assume you maybe are immunocompromised? So if so, why do you care what people are doing when they go out? You should be at home, since you're fearful. I'm being honest....why do you care? The vaccine is coming soon, and all will be well.
