What is your favorite flavor and brand of pellets? I'm looking for some suggestions. Right now I stick to hickory, apple, and pecan.

What are people's thoughts on the "competition blends"?

FYI, I hate mesquite. It smells like burnt, old fashioned cough medicine.

The best pellets I've found are "CookinPellets" brand. All their pellets are made from the real wood type not just a flavored mix of anything. I buy their hickory and perfect mix. I picked up a big bag of the pit boss competition blend on sale at Lowe's and wasn't impressed. We just use them when we're doing something quick and the the smoke doesn't really matter.

I’ve been trying the Pit Boss comp blend as well because heck, a 40 lb bag is like $13 at Walmart. However, I agree that they’re not much to write home about. Very subtle flavor and I’ve had a couple flare up issues with them too. Didn’t ruin anything, but I’d rather not be getting those warnings on my phone while I’m dealing with other stuff.

Anyway, I’ve got some bacon I’m curing now to smoke this weekend, and I’m gonna give the pit boss fruit blend a try, but this will probably be my last round with pit boss pellets. I saw on their website that cookinpellets has a a variety pack of 4 different blends, and I may try that out

The bargain stuff is a waste. I use BBQ Delight pellets sold at Grills of MS.

They have an excellent selection. My favorite is the contest mix, but I have also used hickory, pecan, and sugar maple.

To add to this. See if you have a local dealer for cookin pellets. They’ll offer them cheaper than you can buy online.

I agree. Cookin Pellets seemed to perform the best for me, but they are pricey. For cheap route the Pit Boss has been the best bank for your buck for me. I used Traeger’s pellets one time and they barely smoked. I guess Traeger and Rec Tec don’t get along.

Like wood chunks, it depends on what is being cooked. I typically only use peach or cherry for chicken. cherry or oak for beef. hickory and apple for pork.

I like BBQ Delight or the B&B Brand from Academy, surprisingly. I tend to use straight pecan for most everything, but generally keep a bag of hickory and sugar maple available too to mix things up. I do like the B&B Championship blend (Pecan/Cherry/Oak).

I 2nd the B&B brand. I haven't tried any of the more expensive stuff, but B&B is better than other the cheap brands I've tried. I try to keep their oak, and championship blend on hand all the time.

Cookin provided the most smoke? Getting ready to order my rt soon
Yes. Sorry for the late reply. I have a friend that uses a smoke stick too when cooking on his RT. You’ll notice they offer a bundle of pellets on the website half are kingsford half are cookin pellets.
