If it's anybody but Freeze or Cristóbal then it is because they both said no.

I don’t understand this report at all? Kevin Steele was not a good head coach. Gene Chizik 2.0

You don't pay Gus $21 mil to get Kevin Steele. Cristobal put out a "I haven't been contacted" video yesterday but he didn't say he was staying either.

I know people like bringing up Freeze but this guy has tons of baggage. I bet we're only publicly aware of about 10% of it. Even a filthy school like Auburn has to be leery of him.

If the school who hired Bruce Pearl thinks Freeze is a bridge too far, then I think it's safe to say that it's gonna be a long, long time before Hugh gets another SEC gig.

Brandon Walker said a couple times that all big programs would back off after a background check. I have no idea what that means, but it would confirm that if he doesn’t get a job with all the openings this year.

Good point. I really wish the skeletons were out of the closet on this one. Love to know just what all that sleazy guy did.

It means all the pervy stuff he did with the girl students when he was a high school coach.

Where does the love for Cristobal come from? He won the Sunbelt one year and was fired two years later. He won the damn Pac 12 last year, big deal, and only has that job to begin with because Willie Taggert jumped ship for Flar-da St. He has a losing record as a HC, I don't get it......

This thread shows how little people truly know. Auburn was always going to make a stupid hire. You don't make a stupid firing usually without a stupid hiring. They go hand in hand. Neither Kiffin nor Freeze were ever going to Auburn.

I don't think that would stop Auburn. He's already been through two head coaching stops with that not rising past the level of rumors. If he really has something that will make him off limits, it's something that happened at Ole Miss that is actually illegal, like escorts for underaged recruits. And I think it has to be bad enough that the schools actually say pass, not just the SEC office. To the extent the SEC knows of something and it doesn't want schools hiring Freeze, they've already sat on the information and allowed him to be hired by Liberty. They can't exactly go public at this point. All they can do is threaten to treat whoever hires them as a disfavored member.

Auburn always fires their coaches too soon but they've also had the good fortune to hire coaches that have immediate success.

That's mainly due to talent.

They fire Pat Dye and hire Terry Bowden, Bowden does well with paid for players.

They fire Bowden though, and it takes a while for Tuberville to build up (Tubs is one of the few good hires they made).

Fire Tubs, hire Chizik. Again, Tubs left some talent, then they got lucky with Cam and Malzahn as OC.

Fire Chizik, hire Malzahn, again, some talent was left, and made for Malzahn's system.

Now, with Steele, I'm sure he'll have a little success, because they still have talent. I suspect they'll fade like Chizik or Bowden though, over time, then finally make another good hire once expectations are lowered.

This just shows you what talent can do for you. That fanbase is so bought in that they attract players no matter who is the coach.

When did they exit the market?
For the most part Malzahn kept them out of a lot of that, or at least tried to. He was constantly at odds with those boosters. That said, it could be that Malzahn never had the backbone to stand up to them, or perhaps it was the AD that never stood up to them.
