Hit 18 of 34 threes and 3 of 10 free throws. Need to back up a few feet for free throws.

Yeah, the free throws were a deciding factor against South Florida. If this team has an Achilles heel, that would be it.

I have a lot of respect for people that are athletic enough to play college or pro ball, but I’m always a little dumbfounded when players at this level can’t consistently hit free throws. It’s like the one thing any jackass off the street can do.

I think its because our coach stood up. Because that is important

My assessment of the women's team thus far.....

Previous record for a single game I believe was 14 in 2001.

Extremely talented on offense but a tad lazy on defense. The former will result in scoring a lot of points. The latter will result in giving up a lot of points. If we play can play well on both ends we will not lose more than 3 games. If we continue to give up 20+ offensive rebounds we will lose 7 or more.

Hope I am wrong but I see this team losing 7-8 games. I just don't see the intensity on defense or the carefulness with the basketball on offense needed to be truly elite. The talent is there and I really want to believe in Coach McCray-Penson but this is not Old Dominion. She has to prove herself all over again.

On a related note: Madison Hayes was a 5-star recruit right? She was brutal last night (1-5 FG 2 TO's 4 fouls). I don't know if they keep +/- stats for women but it seemed like Troy cut into our lead every time she came in the game. She seemed a bit slow and out of shape for a player that played guard in high school.

That’s just silly. How many freshmen play well consistently their first season? If you go back and watch games of any upper class player at state you’ll find brutal games. McCowan looked rough her first two seasons.

If defense does not improve it will cost us wins....

Cannot consistently give up 20+ offensive rebounds and expect to beat teams that can match up with us defensively. Rebounding and defense are as much or more intensity and effort related as they are skill. My perspective is probably skewed a bit by what I was accustomed to seeing for the past few years but I'm not feeling it yet with this team. Hopefully that will change.

We gave up 51 and 60 in our two prior Non swac games. When you score 102 points in a fast paced game you will give up some points. Defense may hurt us but its not clear its a huge issue yet. We gave up 82 to Troy last year. We scored 122

No problem with the result, other than South Florida of course. I am just concerned about a stats trend that seems to indicate an effort issue on defense. I probably just have to adjust to the change in style of play.

Well you do expect a bit more out of a 5 star All American than just your average freshman. And I am talking really about all of our games not just last night. I think most of Hayes issue is just conditioning which hopefully will come in time but right now she seems out of shape. Morris too for that matter. She moved as slow as molasses last night and turned it over 4 times despite not touching the ball much.

BTW, Rikea Jackson played pretty damn good for a freshman.

And if you go back and watch the beginning of last season you will see that Jackson struggled at times until early on in conference play. No matter how talented you are in high school it’s a big adjustment.

I will say that I like the idea of Wiggins (when she comes back) and Matharu coming off the bench because those two can score points in bunches and keep us from having such a drop off when we bring in the second team.

We will definitely lose more than we would have under Vic, that is 100% guaranteed. Whether that “more” ends up being 2-3 more or 7-8 more (or somewhere in between) is yet to be seen. But its not really fair to NMP to hold her to the same standard as the greatest coach of any sport in the entire 130 year history of MSU athletics. She’s just not going to be as good, and that’s OK as long as we are still a consistent tournament team.

One truism in basketball is that defense travels but offense often does not as we saw at USF. We really need to improve on defense to get where we need to be. Now granted during the last part of Vic's tenure he had the Big T eraser in the middle of the defense which automatically made us better on that end. We don't have that now no matter who is coaching.

On the free throws, are the men's and women's teams using the same free throw shooting coach?***

If I remember correctly Rickey struggled at the first of the season. She came on strong as the season went along and rocked it during conference play.
