Curious what other sixpackers are doing for Christmas this year. I'm considering not going to my mother's for Christmas because of Covid risk (she's over 75). We would typically stay at her house for a few days with siblings and nieces/nephews but it seems like that would be a bad idea this year. Is anyone else considering cancelling or changing Christmas plans or mostly carrying on as usual?

Think it really depends on how much you see them already, how far you are traveling, and just what the risks are. How much exposure are they already getting and how much exposure have you and your family getting that could risk exposure. Several people could have already had it or some people feel like no matter how much you distance snd stay in you csn still catch it so it doesn’t really matter.
Unless we have an exposure, we will be doing christmas as normal. The only really high risk family person we have likely may not make it til next christmas regardless of any covid exposure. Have one other family member that is somewhat high risk, but they are adults and we're not going to override their decision as far as what risks they think are worth it and how much time they are willing to go without seein grandkids.
Not changing a thing. Going to shoot whisky and snort cocaine every 10 minutes to prevent anything.
Best Christmas ever. I despise Christmas with my extended family. I will sleep well knowing I don't have to lie about some philanthropic trip to Haiti to dig water wells.

In reality we are skiing all week. Just bought the lift tickets the other day. I'm sorry for those that have a loving and caring extended family they won't be with, but some of us are going to take advantage of the situation.

We decided against doing Thanksgiving together this year but as of right now Christmas is still a go. We will see how they feel about it as we get closer.
Probably do the norm. We don’t have any high risk people that would normally attend anyway. The weather on thanksgiving day made it real easy. We all just hung around outside. Played some corn hole, drank some beer and ate lunch. I doubt Christmas is going to give us that nice day.
Not going to have a big family Christmas gathering like normal (almost 40 people) but I’m not sure we were going to do it anyway since my grandmother passed away a month ago. There’s a bit of inter family strife right now so probably wouldn’t happen anyway.

We cut out gatherings with extended family and friends this year, so my high risk parents can see their grandkids at Christmas. We can essentially isolate the our household for 2 weeks prior to being around them & we have a testing site readily available to confirm negative. This has been a rough year for my family with some Covid and non-Covid situations, so some sacrifice is worth it to me. If we couldn’t isolate beforehand, I doubt we would see them in person.
Just make smart decisions. Every family situation is different. Don’t feel bad about adjusting your plans for one year if that’s what you need to do.

We haven't set our plans yet but here is what we did for Thanksgiving. At my Mother's we ate outside around her pool. The tables were at LEAST six feet apart by household.
Mom served every plate, no buffet. At my in-laws we ate in the garage. They had a HEPA filter and heaters going and, the big door partially open and the small door open all the way for cross venting. The tables were at least six feet apart by household. Again, no buffet. We all had a very good time! My Mom and my in-laws are all over 80. My wife is a type one diabetic. We are praying for good weather for Christmas. If not we will probably do similar at my Mom's. You can still do the holidays and keep as safe as you can. You just have to THINK and use common sense. The key is NO indoors stuff period.

We haven’t had any of our big family get togethers(50-150). We will probably do immediate family.
I think that’s the important part that so many don’t really discuss. It’s one year. This isn’t the norm.

We were supposed to go to my in-laws for a largeish (15-20 people) gathering. But my wife made the decision to cancel after she saw pics of her uncle and his wife maskless at a giant motorcycle rally over the weekend. Because of that and a couple of discussions she's had with family members, she realized no one in her family was actually taking it seriously and said she'd rather just take the year off than run the risk of catching and/or spreading it.
Maybe so for that week. What is the average age of death from Covid? What is the average age of death including all forms? I don’t know the current answer, but early on in the pandemic, the age for covid deaths was about 5 years higher than overall average age. People die. Depress causes death and fear and stress lower your immune system.

And I have watched several people I care about die from COVID. You can get creative and get them through isolation. We have worked hard at it with our parents. There is no way around COVID. If they are at risk, and you violate the guidelines, you are putting them at risk, PERIOD. It REALLY pisses me off to see people dismiss COVID because it hits the elderly worse. Any society that dismisses its elderly is on it's way OUT. History and the BIBLE make that very clear.
We cancelled our Thanksgiving get togethers but no plans to skip Christmas. Mines a small family - wife is only child and my brothers have no kids. So our two groups are less than 10.
My dads been trying to schedule a surgery so that played into the Thanksgiving decision - guess that could affect Christmas too but we’ll see. He definitely does not need to get stuck under quarantine and miss dr appointments, much less get sick. At the least we’ll probably go hang out outside the house if weather is nice.

Hope you read the Bible better than my posts. I didn’t dismiss the elderly. I love old people l, unless they are driving, I especially loved my grandparents. They are now all gone. I’m just pointing out there are other risks they face and there is a legitimate risk they will die from something not named covid before the next holiday. Send your loved ones a card. I would like to give mine another hug.
Last I checked, we still live in a country that we are free to celebrate Christmas, everyone should evaluate their risk and protect the vulnerable, but with freedom does come risk.
Disclaimer, I'm not a doctor and not responsible for this advice, but... it's easier said than done but I'd only visit an elder family member after a 7 to 10 day self quarantine. You allegedly don't need 2 weeks.

Yes, you did. If you qualify this by age, you are dismissing the elderly by definition. Of the five closest family members I have left, four are at very high risk, three due to age among other things. You personally attacked us with your post. Give it a rest. We all know you think the aged and people not in good health are to blame for this. I'm OUT here.

We will go over to my sister's house where they now celebrate Yule. I think that's 3 or 4 days before Christmas. It'll be my family and hers...so 4 adults and 5 kids. All 5 hang out as it is in a mini isolation sort of way, and 3 of the 4 adults work at home. Its pretty low risk all around.
And we will either stop by my parent's house or they will stop by mine on Christmas. We will throw presents at one another outside and call it good enough.
It sucks compared to normal, but we want to give them space.
My mother in law passed away in January. No idea if my father in law will drive the 5 hours to stay with us. He has been at home the last few weeks doing nothing and is for sure bored/lonely.
I hope the numbers don't spike in early Jan, but between Xmas and New Years, it seems like a strong likelihood they will spike.
Too many doing too much socializing for the numbers to not increase.

While there is no definitive right or wrong approach, I would say that a blanket declaration to go visit old people is probably closer to 'bad idea' than 'good idea'.
Such a decision should heavily depend on where grandma lives, grandma's health, how many people would visit, if masks and distancing would be involved, etc etc.
Visiting with grandma outside across the driveway from her is much different from visiting her in person without a mask, staying 2 hours, eating dinner with her at the card table, etc.
