So I know I've missed quite a few TWSS write up's the last couple of weeks. My apologies. I've been chasing my two kids that are both under 3, built a new house, and changed jobs. Needless to say I've been slightly pre-occupied. But we all know what they say about excuses...
With that said, I'm going to keep this rather short and sweet.
The Egg Bowl was one of the few games I was able to watch all the way through. I hate losing to Ole Miss. I really do. There are no moral victories but I got to be honest guys, I liked a lot of what I saw.
I saw a team that flat out played hard. I think that's what most of us have been wanting this entire time. I think we finally saw that the last game against Georgia and especially during the Egg Bowl.
I think we've got a real opportunity to be good next year (not that this year is over).
Leach has weeded out some bad eggs. It's for the better even if we lost some talent. That's a sign of a coach that's thinking long term.
We fell just short to Ole Miss with a team that barely had 50 scholarship players. But those players played lights out for the most part and that's about all we can ask for at this point. Man do I like our toughness. I like where we're headed. Sure it's been hard to watch this team ever since LSU, but I got to give credit to the players and coaches for gritting their teeth and getting to work to make the program better.
It's easy for us on the outside to only see the negative. Really easy in fact. Hell even sometimes I forget what those guys are doing and having to deal with day in and day out.
I remind myself though, that when I have to get up at 6am every morning to get the kids ready for the day that our guys were up at 5 to get to the morning lift at 5:30 and they're still lifting. When I go grab a bite for lunch with a buddy, that our guys are either in class or at the facility watching film. When I'm finishing up work for the day, that our guys are about halfway through practice. When I take my wife to eat somewhere nice in downtown Birmingham on a Friday night, that our guys are in the hotel preparing for a game tomorrow. When I wake up Saturday to get the grill going, our guys are already up, pounding gatorades, going through walkthroughs, and reviewing their pre game packet of tendencies and game plan for the day. On Saturday nights at 11:30pm when I'm getting ready for bed, our coaches are still at the facility and are watching film and prepping for the next opponent. Sometimes until 2-3am. And on Sunday when I'm on the couch watching some NFL or cooking dinner for the fam, our guys are either at the facility being treated for injuries, watching film, or out at practice already preparing for our next opponent.
I say all that not to make any of us feel bad. It's what these players signed up to do. I say that because through all the negative things that have happened this year and this season our guys still show up, they still grind, they still represent our University at the highest level, and they still pour their heart and soul into the cause and Mississippi State. For that I'm thankful and extremely proud.
Good things are coming.
