I can think of a couple transfers that probably also wish they could decommit. FSU is an absolute dumpster fire right now

Needs to stay the course in my opinion. FSU going through some rocky times like many first year coaches (shouldn't we know about that?), and the ship will eventually settle down.

Meanwhile in Oxford, I think it's pretty obvious that the Lane Train is going to try and ride Corrall, Ealy, Moore and Co. out of town next year. Look at their class, pretty obvious he's not in it for the long haul.

Almost zero chance its MSU....we’ve got 2 QB’s committed already and an incumbent starter who will still be a freshmen when they both get to campus. Only way we land him is if we get a decommitment from Robertson.

we need an older juco to come in that's older to build some depth behind Will. having basically a redshirt year. he has four years to play and we are signing two qb's so we will have essiantial 3 freshmen next year. a juco QB would add some depth and an older classman to that group and not really expecting to start unless they come in and just blow Will out.

Why a juco? Been proven recently that college QB experience is NOT what it's cracked up to be in this offense - see Rogers this year. Gimme Robertson, Greek to battle Rogers next year.

Depth and transfers. Bring in a juco with experience that knows they are a back up. That way we are t in a position like we are now with a walk on backing our guy up. You basically are going to assume one of our three freshmen will transfer after next year. If not both. They aren’t going to want to ride the bench for three years to watch will.

we have tried 5th year seniors at QB the last two years and it didn't work .... at this point in time (many have called it a "transition") I say we stick with the freshmen whether it be Robertson or Greek ... I don't see a JC transfer accepting a position of back up to a freshman

I don't blame Luke for bailing on FSU. They are a mess.

The way I see it, we pulled Rogers from a big Ole Miss family and they are likely going to get Altmeyer from right down the road from us, so it's kinda Even Steven. And we are still adding Sawyer Robertson too. So I don't really view this as an AJ Brown type thing where we were starving at his position and couldn't get him interested for whatever reason. We are fine at the QB position for the forseeable future and I'm not sure this staff ever pursued him hard.

I do find it interesting that when Moorhead was here there was this big debate about whether we should pursue Altmeyer or Ty Keyes harder. And now we've ended up not really pursuing either of them.

I watched Brandon vs. Starkville last year and Rogers and Altmeyer looked like the same type QB to me.

Don't do me like that bruh. I'm not trolling. I think you kinda have to be blind to not think Lane is a short timer based on his history, plus looking at the current recruiting class and last year's class. Just not much there.

I’m not trolling, and I know you aren’t either. I just think it’s a lazy argument to say a recruiting class ranking in late November is indicative of his job pursuits elsewhere. I think there are legitimate reasons as to why the class is at where it’s at. Some are positive for OM, some are not.

I also think his job hopping is drastically overblown. The only job he’s really left, was Tennessee. And he’s said multiple times that USC was his dream job, and that he screwed up and should’ve stayed at UT.

Now, I’m not saying he will be our coach in 2021, because I don’t know him or his opportunities. But, I also think that he’s doing a good job when rival fans start pushing the narrative he’s going somewhere else. Believe me, I know. We did it for years with Mullen.

The truth is likely somewhere in the middle, but especially in this current year, I think evaluating recruiting and roster management is fickle, at best. Especially trying to compare 14 commits to 20+.

Let me put it a different way. I think he is going to have some good options after next year, and he knows that. He's got all his offensive horses coming back (except maybe Moore and Yeboah I guess). And yes, he's a hired gun, just like Danny Boy was.

We aren't going to do this. Can't waste the scholarship. The Vandy guy is going to play this role.

Yep. I have to admit I didn't think much of your hire when you hired him, but he's done a damn good job so far.

A couple thoughts, but otherwise I agree with you;

1) if he’s highly sought after after next season, than we’ve probably won 8-10 games (counting bowl), so it’s hard to get too upset. You hire coaches to win. Both our schools are used to firing them, so them moving to “greener pastures” is a good thing

2) if Kiffin stays here 9 years like Mullen did, then he’s going to be an absolutely incredible hired gun. He’s likely going 5-5 in his first year, against an All-SEC schedule, and that’s with a crap the bed performance against Arkansas and a screw job against Auburn. And that’s with the worst defense in the country. He may have defenses this bad, although I hope not. But he will never have one worse. So, I’d think it’s fair to assume he will be gradually better, especially once recruiting returns to normal.

I think Kiffin is a lot like the next school that hires Freeze (Liberty is his FAU) and that’s getting a coach that’s fairly proven, and has screwed up a previous opportunity that will do their damnedest to not do it again. I also think State is getting a Mike Leach that’s desperately trying to cement his legacy among the greats. That’s why I think both programs are headed towards big-time Egg Bowl’s

He will win next year, I think that's dang near guaranteed, 8 wins minimum (if we play the regular 12 game schedule). The defense will get better, simply because they all can come back, and one year makes a big difference. This isn't a hate Ole Miss post. If he thinks he can continue to win, he'll stay.

Mullen staying 9 years was great, but he never recruited like he could have had he wanted to be here. We simply paid him too much to leave. It's all in what the coach wants to do. Think about what he did after 2010. He was on top of the world and could have brought in an insane recruiting class to vault his momentum. He didn't, he job shopped instead, and the best guys ended up at Ole Miss. He never would finish anything.

If Lane Train is the same way, it's hard to tell if it's best for him to go on and leave, or just continue to never get past your peak simply because you didn't put in the work to get the right croots. That's why Freeze was such a good thing for you guys, he WANTED to be there and his recruiting showed.

ETA: I do think Lane has a little bit of Malzahn in him. He's got the 'hot' system of this decade, and seems to be able to adapt a little.

I’m not saying he won’t go to Ole Miss, but his father is a very big MSU guy.

Now if his son has a good opportunity at playing and succeeding at FSU or OM, I guess ole miss is closer for him to visit and watch.

3 jobs in the last 6 years is job hopping (Bama, FL Atl, Ole Miss)

I mean, is it? He was the OC at Alabama for 3 seasons, which was by all definitions a career rehab job. He excelled there, I think even the biggest hater would agree. He was the first guy to convince Saban to modernize the offense, which helped them stay on top. He then went to FAU and won 2 CUSA titles in 3 seasons, at a place that had a grand total of zero before. Now he’s in year 1 at Ole Miss, where he’s elevated the program, even the biggest haters on this board would agree with that, albeit begrudgingly. So, that’s 3 jobs in 7 years, with 2 of them being promotions or upward trajectory. Most of us would “job hop” if given those opportunities.

And if that’s job hopping, then 95% of college coaches are job hoppers, so he’s not a rarity. Like I said, he may leave this year, I don’t know. I doubt it, but I don’t know. But if he does, he did a good job in his one year here. Beats the hell out of firing him next year.

I again agree with a lot of what you’re saying.. but I also think Kiffin and Mullen are in completely different points in their careers when hired by each school. And, at the end of the day, Mullen built State’s program into a program that was a play or two away or a player or two away (Cam Newton) from winning a national championship. If Kiffin wants to do that here, while eyeing other jobs, I’ll take it.

The Ole Miss fan in me thinks that he likely understands he needs to prove he can build something here and be calculated in his next move. I understand why other fans my scoff at that. Neither knows who will be right, and Kiffin probably doesn’t know himself, currently. But the best way to get a better job is to excel in your current one. So I’ll worry about his next job the day it happens. Mullen damn sure didn’t wind up at Florida because he made MSU’s program worse.

I for one don't think he is leaving any time soon. Eventually the right job will come open and he will go but who knows when. His recruiting is looking poor and we just got another wide reciever. I just hope we keep all our recruits

That's just a standard progression for upwardly mobile coaches. The only difference for Lane is that he already had an opportunity that he blew (I don't count the raiders since so few NFL coaches last long), which it looks pretty likely now that Lane was just given responsibilities before he was ready for them.

I don't think the recruiting class is indicative of him looking at other jobs. I think he struggled in recruiting and as a backup option is going to hit the transfer market hard. And that has the potential to leave him with a very imbalanced roster that will be hard to come back from, so if he gets the opportunity to leave, it might be more appealing knowing that he is in for a lean year or two while he balances out his roster.

To be fair, it's basically going to put him in the position that MSU is already in because of all our transfers. The only reason MSU's roster situation is not causing a complete panic is that we're already there and are having some key young pieces step up, which will hopefully ease the pain of being well below 85. Our QB is a freshman that will be here four more years likely (unless he loses his job), our best WR and LT are freshmen (although either of them might go to the draft when they're eligible), we have young defensive players and where we do have upper classmen contributing a lot, they are at least at positions that MSU has historically been able to recruit well.
