May have been some
concern about Rogers getting it to the end zone. The clock management on the last td drive was horrible and where we lost it.

It was 100% the right call.
You make it a lot easier to get people to the emdzobe and throw it.
Less time to get sacked.

Sixpack football knowledge is so 17ing dumb.

Even if you are already on the 35, you still try and get a quick 10.

Then you have a legit shot at a real play to the end zone.

The chances of throwing up a Hail Mary and not getting pick is a lot less than a normal pass. So you don’t just plan for 2 Hail Marys. Now 2 might end up working out but you don’t plan for 2.

Does 8 yards make the difference? Is 44 vs 36 yards out that different? I am not sure about Rogers arm range, but it looked like he had plenty of arm left on that final throw (it went fairly high before it came down). And how much time does a 44 yard bomb take off the clock? My guess is it can be done in 7-8 seconds if the QB does not wait around to throw it. That leaves you with 1 or 2 seconds for a second attempt. I figure the receivers can make it downfield in 6s. Two bombs from 44 yards might give you better odds than one from 36.

We need the Big Data people to weigh in.

We had like 12 seconds left. You aren’t going to have time for two Hail Marys. We did the right thing.

I agree. You don’t throw the Hail Mary till you have to. Get as close as possible before you throw it

Maybe on the possession before you go for the touchdown instead of 3 I don’t know. I just think the last drive was managed as well as you can with only 23 seconds left.

It takes extra time for receivers to run 8 more yards.
More time off the clock.
More time to get sacked.
Chances are clock runs out or there is a pick.

You are expecting 1 chance at the Hail Mary. 36 is better than 44 if you only have 1 chance.

Correct.

The second to last drive might could have saved some time but if you score a td, we had a chance to kick a field goal on last drive. IF WE SCORE A TD BUT WE DIDNT.

Hindsight says this is correct. We should have gone for the td on 4th down. Our ASU transfer kicker makes a 50 yarder to tie it more often than we catch a hail mary in the end zone. I woulda preferred the fg first only if the 4th down was really low odds of conversion.

I mean in hindsight I would have liked to go for it but if you don’t kick the field goal and don’t score on 4th.

Game is over. You don’t even get a chance at the end.

The other thing is if we score on previous drive they play defense differently on last drive. Lot less full on prevent Bc they know we only need a field goal.

Okay, I need to take this one back. After finding some stats you're better off doing a single bomb from 30-39 yards out versus two from 40-49. Granted, they're aggregated stats, but I didn't think the yardage difference would make up for that much. The timing would have also been tight to get two throws in.

Both of your posts are correct but we are just trying to make chicken soup outta chicken **** at this point. If Williams doesn't fumble the ball and our secondary doesn't give up 75 bombs all game we win this game comfortably. We are D2 level bad in the defensive backfield. Just have no bodies back there. We are Poland fighting off the nazis with bicycles in the defensive backfield. It's soooo bad.

Agreed. Sucks but I personally see evidence that if we can get top 30 talent and occasionally top 25 and top 20 around the field, leach’s system has a very good chance to work in the sec AGAINST GOOD TEAMS.

There were 10 seconds left before the second to last play. A 50 yard hail mary is a 10 second play at absolute best. A WR who runs a 4.5 forty runs it in 5-5.5 seconds in pads and coverage. Ball comes out after 5 seconds when WR are at the 10, and is in the air for 3-4 seconds, with a typical 1-2 second run-off before the whistle blows it dead if its incomplete.

And I don’t know if you’ve paid much attention to our OL, but they have pretty much sucked left hind tit all year long even against a 3-man rush, plus there were possibly concerns about Rogers getting it to the EZ (especially if he was on the move and couldn’t set his feet).

It was absolutely the right call to get as close as possible before the throw.

17 moral victories...State should have won that game. Problem is improper use of players...not putting them in a position to win

Not sure why you've got 7 downvotes. But the answer is because we can't go deep. Still should have tried though. That play had 0% chance of getting the TD we needed.

I would have rather seen a hook and ladder type play or a post route and let the WR try to run it in versus a jump ball. In any case, you're looking at a low percentage play.

The results say it was not the right call.

So if we somehow threw 2 hail marys and both were incomplete, would the results also have said that those plays weren’t the right calls?

It’s called a hail mary for a reason. If you are ever in a situation where you are debating if you should throw one or two hail marys, you are 99.9% 17ed already. Its sheer dumb luck if it works out in either scenario. But the logic of making sure you get at least one off to give yourself a chance vs. a sack, a duck while getting hit that falls incomplete, or a completion short of the goal line makes a ton of sense.

Patdog is an accountant. He clearly understands numbers way better than us.

He doesn’t understand football all that well though.

This is true. That was some vintage Mullen clock management on that drive. Dinking and dunking, using the whole play clock, and then burning two timeouts...

This playcall and execution was probably one of our best yesterday. If we’re going to pick out plays that we could have done better on and had a bigger impact on the outcome we can do better than this guys.

The thread was abt the short pass on first down with 10 seconds left.

100% the right call.

If you aren’t arguing against that, carry on.

Yeah, that call was OK. Got into better position for 1 good attempt at the end zone. The call at 23 seconds left was idiotic. We needed 30 yards and he threw a swing pass. We got bailed out by the video review or we'd have snapped the ball at under 10 seconds left from our own 20. Wasted time outs earlier didn't help either.
