I told myself when I first saw Yellowstone at 20 years old that if I could ever earn a decent wage, I would move there. 20 years later, the dream is fulfilled.
We passed on WY and MT because of the super harsh winters and decided on Boise. ID has 34 million acres of public hunting land which is technically 4th, but most of NV and CA is desert land not viable for game. So practically only Alaska has more public hunting land than ID. The entire state of MS is 30 million ares for reference.
Boise is actually quite warm too. At 2700' it has 4 real seasons including 100° days in the summer and only gets 18" of snowfall annually. Salt Lake City gets 53" and Bozeman gets 73". I like the snow and don't mind the cold, but 6' of snowfall a year is unbearable.
Within 2-3 hours we have 6 ski resorts. Sun Valley included and is one of the best in the country, plus Bogus Basin basically in town. I'm just over 5 hours from West Yellowstone. ID has arguably the best fly fishing in the country including the Boise river which is a 10 minute walk from the back door of my house. 5 minutes out the front door is a trailhead to the Ridges to Rivers trail system with nearly 300 miles of running, biking, hiking, horseback, and motorized trails in the hills overlooking the city. 35 minutes up the road in either direction is class II-IV white water rafting and kayaking.
2.5 hours away is probably the coolest place many have never heard of... The Sawtooth Wilderness. I have not hit the trails yet as we just moved here last week and the snow is too deep, but I took the family on the scenic drive this weekend and whoa. Not is big and famous as the Tetons, but the same feel to me. I'm really looking forward to the spring. It's supposed to be a backpacking paradise without the crowds of more popular destinations.
My game plan is to focus on the seasons and take advantage with my two young boys. Winter -ski and snow machine adventures. Spring - fly fishing, hiking, and backpacking. Summer fly fishing, kayaking, mountain biking, and hiking. Fall - hunting and backpacking.
I bring all this up because I'm going to throw a standing offer out. We are building a new house that will complete this summer. We are specifically adding a private guest suite and oversized garage for extra gear and a vehicle. I'm going to turn my truck into the family adventure vehicle and get a new car for work/daily driver. So by next fall, if any of you looking to travel up this way I am willing to let you borrow my pickup (crew cab f150 with camper shell), any gear you may need that I am not using during the time period, and will even let you crash at Casa De Socks on your way in and out. The Boise airport flies direct to DFW, Houston, and Atlanta so most on this board should be able to get with a direct or one stop flight.
In a few years, I hope to be really up to par on the Idaho hunting and fishing scene. At that point we could look at a group elk, mule deer, and pheasant hunt that doesn't require breaking the bank. So Pilgrim, keep 2024 open on your calendar, you may be coming to Idaho.*
So if any of you are looking for family adventures or men's group getaways to the outdoors in the coming years like fly fishing, backpacking, snow skiing, kayaking, or big game hunting, just let me know. What's mine is yours if you come this way.
All I expect in return is to have a lot of options for where I am tailgating when I come back for games.*
