I've heard horror stories on both sides. I went to games in Jackson, Oxford and Starkville. The only issues I ever had was trash talking Ole Miss fans in Starkville.
Honestly I had worst experiences with Bama, Ark, TN, and FL fans in Starkville. Jawja fans acted like they were imposed upon to be there. The rest were okay, even shared a drink with a few from Auburn and LSU folks.
I’ve been all over the SEC. 95% of fans of all teams are good folks who are there for the right reasons. Any time someone asks “who are the worst fans?” I always say “let’s take MSU out of the conversation, because we interact with them the most, and it’s a heated in-state rivalry, that brings out the worst in folks.” Then the rebuttal is “well I’ve had WAY more bad experiences with MSU fans than any other school!” Yeah, well no **** Sherlock Holmes. We all live in the same state, a lot of us go to every Egg Bowl, home and away, etc. Obviously I’m going to have more negative interactions with MSU fans, and you all are going to have more negative interactions with Ole Miss fans. It’s math. If I have 5,000 interactions with MSU fans, and 250 are negative, I’m choosing to highlight the 250 over the 4,750 folks who were gracious, kind, friendly, and knew how to poke fun about the rivalry without being an *******. If I’ve only gone to Florida 3 times and had 600 interactions with fans, and 40 were negative, I may not remember those as much, but on average, their ******* count is higher.
To be honest, I’ve been treated like crap in Starkville before. When I was younger, a lot of it I likely deserved. Young, dumb and drunk doesn’t mix well. A lot of it I haven’t deserved and neither has my family. But, that doesn’t mean you are all jerks. A ton of MSU fans were super kind, invited us to their tailgate, and we had fun. I also recognize that’s not some novel experience. I have a close friend who’s a die-hard MSU fan, has a beautiful, sweet wife, and two little boys who bleed maroon. They were treated like trash by a group of Ole Miss fans in Oxford, to the point that I almost wound up fighting them. It sucked. I hope they choose to remember all of us who were kind to them, but their little boys probably can’t contextualize that, and it sucks.
The moral of the story is, don’t be an ******* fan. It’s way more fun to be nice to people and just enjoy your day. If those events really took place in SC game, I hope they’re identified and punished. It’s pathetic.
