The thread in dogs last week got me thinking. I’m considering a golden retriever or golden doodle. Any advice on reputable breeders?

And he was the best dog I ever had. He passed this year, but wonderful pets. smart and easy to potty train. They do shed a lot, I mean a lot.

Depends on where you live but I got mine from a local that I could go see the parents. It worked out well for me. Cheers.

Got ours from a Breeder in forkvilke MS. Best dog ever.

Do you have a golden retriever or golden doodle? I’m kinda interested in a retriever.

Trying to decide between a lab or retriever. Got a friend that has a golden retriever and he’s a great dog but I’ve always been fond of a lab.

Doodle. Got one that has hair a little less curly than normal so it looks little more like retriever than most doodles. Still doesn't shed, which is awesome.

We recently bought a Portuguese Water dog. Great family dog, very smart and hypoallergenic, they love the water and can be trained to retrieve for hunting.

We loved our red-hued golden (who died in 2017). He was such an awesome dog for the whole family. You can't go wrong with a golden retriever.

Thanks. That’s helpful. The shedding might be a deal breaker for the wife. We might be better off with the golden doodle.

Golden Doodles take the worst behavioral traits from each breed and put into one dog. If those are your two options, go retriever.

get a doodle. intelligence of a poodle, no shedding, hypoallergenic, and personality of the golden.
get a f1b though. that means it's a poodle and goldendoodle baby. 75% poodle. i have a f1b labrodoodle and the dog is awesome. if you're interested in a labrodoodle, my breeder just had a litter and they are golden like mine. one of the grandparents was a yellow lab

What is the name of your breeder?

I don’t have any experience but I’ve heard that both ways. Also heard that they take the best of both.

Even if it’s 50-50, you’re paying top dollar for a “breed” that has no pedigree and no real standards for breeding. It is a mutt (which is not necessarily a bad thing), but you’re paying a purebred price for it—and you can’t even be sure what its temperament will be.

Would only add that

Goldens are great with families, and kids. Their temperament is very easy going. But they want to be with someone all the time, they’re very very family oriented. They consider themselves a full member...moreso than other breeds. they need lots of attention until they get older then they taper off some to sleeping a lot. I wanted a super friendly, amicable dog and I got one.

We have a small/petite F2B doddle from a breeder down in Robertsdale, AL. Sweetheart of a family dog. She does exactly what we want her to... wag her tail, look cute, not shed in the house and go get the squeaky toy when somebody throws it.

The only caution I will give you is to understand you will either become an expert at dog grooming or take him/her to the dog spa every couple of months for a clip.

If an inside dog, DO NOT GET A GOLDEN RETRIEVER unless you committed to brushing, vacuuming and lint rolling (and still not being able to keep up with the shedding) all your awake hours you are at home. If you can live with dog hair erry where, then that is a different matter.

Got our F1b Goldendoodle from the same place back in January. Absolutely great family dog. I second the grooming comment as well!

I just got a Golden Retriever from Big Lake Golden Retrievers in Monroe, LA. He claims to breed a retriever with shorter hair and less shedding. Mine’s inside mostly and doesn’t shed too bad. There is shredding though. He’s a beautiful dog. He’s a puppy though - hyper as a lab and too aggressive with my kids. I’ll sell him to you.

The GSD is the most protective dog in the world. If you are going to get a shedder anyway, get a GSD. Train them and enjoy love from a pet you can never imagine.

We got our 2 Goldens from Southern Charms in Van Vleet, MS. Kinda near Starkville.

They’re amazing dogs. Incredibly smart, patient with the kids. Terrible guard dogs.

I decided to go with the European golden over the American due to lower rates of arthritis and hip dysplasia. I had recently lost my bulldog who had bad arthritis. Wanted to mitigate any old age pain and or mobility issues. No guarantee of course.

And as far as Goldens shedding, they really only shed twice a year (for 6 months at a time)

Real Men Own Poodles.
We bought a Standard Poodle, Jake, about 10 years ago. Standards are big dogs. My Boxer can walk under Jake and not touch his belly. We don't groom him with the famous foo-foo cut, we cut him to look like a retriever. His intellect towers over other dogs and he has never shed a hair. He has telepathic abilities and dwarfs other dogs when it comes to smarts. When I walk him people want to know what kind of dog is that? Jake just laughs and winks at me.

3 yr old Golden Retriever owner here. She's the sweetest most loving dog we've ever had, doesn't meet a stranger and not an aggressive bone in her body. That's the good. The bad, we've got one of those Roomba robot vacs that runs every other day all day and has to be dumped multiple times a day. She's also probably the dumbest dog we've ever had, barks at her reflection in the window, growls at tree shadows, etc. Maybe she's not dumb, she's just not smart.

There is a bloodhound/lab mix at the Oktibbeha county shelter that needs a good home.
