Welp, it’s probably now or never.

I’ve never built one, and have pretty much zero clue on what to buy. How hard is it? Costs? Advice, tips, resources?

One of the simplest I have used is ceratac.com and pay the extra 19.99 to have the upper pre-assembled. Purchase the stripped lower locally and put the lower together yourself. Having the upper already assembled takes the tricky part away in my opinion.

Why not just buy a high quality fully assembled AR? That takes all the guess work out of it. Unless you just want to build your own.

Well, they’re expensive for starters.
I don't know that you can build one much cheaper than you can purchase one unless you are looking for something unique. If you are just looking for a basic AR, I would just buy one. That being said, now is not a gun buyers market.

It will probably be a long time before it’s a gun buyers market again.

You need roll pin starters and roll pin punches. Get a bottle of aluminum black because you're inevitably going to scratch it upon assembly.

Edit... I've built a bunch of them. After the first one, you can do it pretty quickly. Like others have said... You can buy kits with uppers already assembled. But I like assembling them. Look at geauxarmory.com. I think they started in Louisiana somewhere but have since moved to Starkville. I've bought a few kits from them. They have my stamp of approval.

PRO TIP: Hide your kids and wife when you start dealing with tiny springs and detents. You will cuss like you never have cussed in your life. Those tiny bastards will shoot across the room and give you the ultimate case of the red ***.

I’d look into Palmetto State Arms. I have a few friends that have built them from there. They have a lot of kits, but probably hard to come by now.

Tragically, all of my guns were lost in a boating accident.

Aero precision M4E1 lower has the wide glove fit trigger guard forged in and uses a set screw for the bolt catch. These are where most people screw up with a basic stripped lower. Literally use any good quality lower parts kit and be done in 15 minutes.

TYR Defense in Cartersville, GA allegedly makes a mean AR pistol for around $1,300. Not that I would know anything about it. Good luck-
