Just a caution about medical marijuana

I was very much in favor of it before I moved to upstate New York and I still think it's a good idea, but we have a church member who has totally flipped out while using it. He's been institionlized like 3 times and is really out of touch with reality. Before, he seemed to have it all together but has now destroyed his family and is in the verge of being homeless. Again, I still think it's a good idea and would have voted for it. Just watch those around you (or even yourself) if it is taken. Some people can't handle it.

Yes, some people shouldn't use it. That makes it no different than any other medicine, though.

I suspect your church member was headed for mental illness issues with or without the marijuana. But yeah, drugs (including alcohol) and mental illness definitely are a bad combination.

Weed didn’t do that - he has other issues.

What part of upstate NY, if you don’t mind me asking?

I completely agree. I've been a part of the recovery community for years and the only time I've seen weird stuff like that from pot smokers involved spice and chemically enhanced pot. I've seen a lot of suicide and OD deaths in the rooms but have never seen or heard of a person ODing from pot or even suicide ideation linked to pot use alone. And I emphatically agree that the person most likely had some serious underlying mental (and spiritual) issues, not to mention significant unhealed trauma, that is probably the primary cause of the behavior.

I would bet that he "totally flipped out" because there were other (unrelated) mental health issues. Smoking anything isn't good for you, but neither is poisoning your body with alcohol. To me, it's more about the freedom for people with terrible illnesses to get off the addictive poison that they are being prescribed, and try something else that won't ruin their lives.

Ahhhh who are we kidding. Medical marijuana is just one more step towards the complete legalization of recreational marijuana in a few years. Let's just admit that. I'm ok with that, but let's not kid ourselves.

About 20 minutes outside of Rochester.

Yeah, I would suspect he had problems before, but don't tell his ex-wife that. For her, it was all about marijuana. I don't know because I didn't know him before.

I don’t think going crazy is a side effect of weed. He’s got other issues going on, you just don’t know it yet.

Are you sure that the only drug/s he was using? I have never heard of anything like this happening from THC alone.

He lost his mind I tell you!!!

"He started talking slow, laughing at nothing, gained an insatiable hunger for Funyuns, an unquenchable thirst for Fanta, began wearing woven baja hoodies, and reeks of Polo Sport to cover up the weed smell. I'm going to have him committed... "

There are millions of people that a lot of their acquaintances think have it all together when in reality they are a split second away from losing it if they are encountered with the right (or wrong) catalyst. Those 6” between people’s ears can be a football field of torment and demons that even those that know them the best are oblivious to.

People don’t OD on it, they simply go to sleep and then wake up ready to eat an elephant. Tokers don’t get in drunken bar fights and beat someone half to death with a pool stick. They don’t get in a drunken stupor and beat their wives and kids. They don’t even want confrontations. Think of how many talented singers actors drank or drug abused themselves to death. Elvis, Tom Petty, Prince, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Whitney Houston, Amy Winehouse, Michael Jackson, Heath Ledger, Chris Farley, Kurt Cobain, River Phoenix, Len Bias, Belushi, Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Hank Sr.. Thats just to name a few yet Willie Nelson and Trigger are still getting it done good as ever at 87 years old. It’s not a wonder drug(In the therapeutic sense) and its not for everyone yet neither is Florida-Georgia Line yet we allow the youth of America to pollute their ears with it so it is what it is.

This is an issue much like the election and the flag change, there are tons that support it but won’t publicly avow it. I have a unique and compelling argument from my story that I shared on FB prior to the vote that I started to share here but didn’t. A few publicly agreed and thanked me for being brave but nowhere near what most would have thought. As many if not more texted me or PM’d me saying the same but were afraid to do publicly. It’s a shame that in the year 2020 people are afraid of being ostracized for simply stating their opinion on issues such as these.

I’m sorry to hear that, but I’d be willing to wager a substantial amount of money that there is more to that story than marijuana.

It's hard to tell because it's a chicken and an egg issue. If you look at correlation, there's a pretty strong one between weed and mental health issues. But of course some or most of that is (and theoretically all of it could be) just caused by people prone to mental health being prone to smoke pot, either because they are trying to self medicate or it just impacts their propensity for other reasons.

Some scientists look at the data and think it's mostly correlation and not causation, some look at it and think there's a good big of causality that goes both ways.

I tend to think that it actually causes mental health issues in at least some people, and exacerbates underlying but manageable to the point of not even being noticed in others, just because I've seen pot head friends that never had any indication of mental health issues become paranoid, which seems to indicate at least some sort of impact. Of course it could be that it's not the weed per se but other **** in it that wouldn't be present in higher grade and legally produced marijuana.

“You see, I think drugs have done some good things for us. I really do. And if you don't believe drugs have done good things for us, do me a favor. Go home tonight. Take all your albums, all your tapes and all your CDs and burn them. 'Cause you know what, the musicians that made all that great music that's enhanced your lives throughout the years were rrrrrrrrrrrreal 17ing high on drugs. The Beatles were so 17ing high they let Ringo sing a few tunes.”

I’ve seen countless folks lives and families destroyed by prescription drugs/alcohol. How many by weed? Zero point zero.

I don't think anybody that looks at it thinks it's worse than opioids or alcohol, but everybody is more or less aware of the impacts of opioids or alcohol. ON the other hand, a lot of people promote weed as having zero negative side effects, and it doesn't look like that's the case, especially with respect to mental illness, although again, it's hard to tease out how much is causality versus how much is correlation.

But if something like schizophrenia or bipolar disorder ran in my family, I'd be very hesitant to regularly smoke weed.

Over what method? Xanax?
Nancy Reagan started this ********..and left us.* We let the squarest women in the country...have the loudest platform....and still paying the price.* I’m Only half serious

but Xanax has truly hurt more than it’s helped imho....I think marijuana is a safer alternative...especially for short term anxiety. I stopped being a guinea pig about 10 years back. Lexipro and xanex in your 20’s is so bad for your brain. It numbs all give a 17s...rounds your edge, turns you into a capsules zombie....oh and don’t try and quit. Oh and don’t try to ever go on an all night 17 athon with the GF or wife either. The second you get hooked on xan or lex, your dick stops working.

mid to late 20’s is a great time to have a root

Weed never helps one take action. If I have to be honest, that's a good thing for the majority of this country. If we handed out joints to Antifa, the riots would be over pretty quickly. Legal weed, available in a similar fashion to cigarettes in every corner would, no doubt, would help the violence problem in this country.

I was curious because I have a friend in Belfast - not too far from you...

I think that's in what as known as the southern tier. It's kind of funny because people in New York look down on those of us in western New York, but people really look down on the southern tier. To them, it's almost like the delta of New York. I've driven through once and it seems pretty nice to me.

Ever smoked a good Sativa? It gets you up and going.

Or try just these...

[h=1]“What a wee little part of a person's life are his acts and his words! His real life is led in his head, and is known to none but himself. All day long, the mill of his brain is grinding, and his thoughts, not those of other things, are his history. These are his life, and they are not written. Everyday would make a whole book of 80,000 words -- 365 books a year. Biographies are but the clothes and buttons of the man -- the biography of the man himself cannot be written.”[/h]
