Leach is just trying to get the roster trimmed down so he can join a 7 on 7 passing league **

Yeah, we need our guys to be more stoned than they are already. That's a recipe for good football.

We can't be kicking starters off the team cause of weed if we ever wanna compete for the West. Legalize the damn plant already MS. Leach won't kick em off if it's legal or I would hope not if he isn't a dumbass. I have my doubts increasing by the day though.

Don't know about drugs and other "cultural" things during Saban's first year, but Croom beat him, I think in Tuscaloosa. So he must've had a really bad year.

Croom did not beat him in Tuscaloosa. Ellis Johnson beat him in Starkville.

Who says it was weed? Could have been that or anything else.

Well, three positive tests give the same result everywhere. And I can tell you, these guys didn't just fail one test.

The trick is, don't test them. Or only test the ones you want to get rid of. **

^^This. And legal or not, Leach made a rule about it so they can either follow the rule or leave. You're either in all the way or not at all, none of this half *** crap that has been allowed to go on for the past few years

Does anyone work in a state where weed is legal? Do companies actually allow their employees to test positive for weed and keep their job? I wouldn't think so but nothing would surprise me anymore.

I seem to remember us having a coach in the mid-2000s who was committed to doing things "the right way." He cleaned up the locker room. He was also hell-bent on running his system, completely opposed to change.

That coach got 4 years and then got the boot. The boot really hurt him on a personal level, because he thought throwing out bad apples was more appeasing than winning.

Smoke as much reefers as Marshawn Lynch and Michael Jordan if you play in beast mode!!!

Croom didn't have the resume Leach has. To compare the two is comparing apples

and oranges. Leach has won at two schools that are out in the middle of nowhere and had little success before he came. Croom was a NFL running back coach with no head coaching experience.

Wasn't there a story about a team smoking prior to the game that they lost to Maine or something like that?

There are a lot of team rules that aren't based on "legality", rather, accountability and public perception. You sign the dotted line, you give up some of your personal desires for the overall benefit of that job (or in this case team).

Take Mike Kinnison for example (former head baseball coach at Delta State). Proven winner, hard nose, no BS guy. You were expected to be clean shaven, clean cut, shirt tucked in on campus, and sit in the front 1/3 of your classroom. Failure to do so resulted in being in the dog house. None of those have anything to do with legalities. They have to do with accountability and representing the program in a positive light.
That gives you 2 options: choose yourself or your team. If you choose yourself, the option to choose the team would be removed for you, regardless of your on-field talent.

Croom could have been alright in the mold of Eddie O or Dabo. Instead, he tried to be Mike Leach-esque and that obviously wasn't his skill set. He should have been out recruiting his *** off instead of trying to convince everyone he was a West Coast Offense wizard.

This is what gives me some slight hope about Leach.

Maybe, but wins are generally attributed to the head coach, rightly or wrongly, and not the DC.

I am in MS but I asked our HR director about this and he said that he understands that it is comparable to alcohol now. Basically, what you do on your own time is your business but they have the right to punish you if it is in your system while at work if company policy prohibits it

An athlete might be kicked off the team nowadays for smoking tobacco cigarettes as well. You never know.

So, Croom would have been alright if he was an elite recruiter, with a practically unlimited budget to hire elite assistants on both sides of the ball, and a total willingness to be completely hands-off and let those assistants do their jobs. So in other words, he would have been OK if he was a completely different personality AND at a much more advantaged program? I couldn’t agree more.

Unfortunately, Croom sucked at recruiting, was stubborn as **** about his offensive system that never worked, and coached at a historical bottom dweller. So he was not ever going to be in that mold.

Along those same lines, Rockey Felker would have been much more successful if he had been in more of a Nick Saban mold. Too bad he couldn’t get past the fact that he was actually Rockey Felker.

People work in places outside of their skill set all the time. Croom was not a bad recruiter, and could have been better, had he the motivation to do so. And further, that CEO skillset is not only successful at a blue blood program. Even though I never said Croom needed to go to a blue blood program, you're kinda making that up in your own mind.

Mississippi State fans have such a small view of things sometimes. A coach is making disciplinary moves and it must mean he is Croom. There are countless examples of disciplinary action that didn't come from a head coach that stunk, but our fans have such a limited purview that we can only compare to our experience, and our most notable example of this happens to be Croom. It's just dumb.

God I hope Leach is kicking off players for smoking cigarettes. He should kick them off for drinking alcohol and cussing, too! We may finally get back to recruiting Mississippi really well if that happens.

You are the one who referenced two coaches in O and Dabo that only had success at programs with prior national titles in the past quarter century before they were hired....aka blue blood programs...and nowhere else. One of which failed miserably beforehand at a school with the roughly the same resources and in the same state as MSU. So no, I’m not the one who made up anything.

So, according to google, weed stays in your system for anywhere from 3 days up to over a month. So, these young men are being held to the same standard as working adults. If you test positive, you lose your job/scholarship.

It will suck to lose players but I think I am 100% OK with this.

Yeah, you are. Dabo has only been in one place, and Orgeron did a total 180 on how he coaches before he went to LSU. Had he employed his more recent strategies he could have been much better at Ole Miss. After all, he did recruit those 2008 and 2009 teams, one of which beat the eventual national champion on the road. He might not have won a title there, as that is the real difference between what a coach can do at an Ole Miss vs. an LSU, but would have been much better coaching from his true skillset.

Orgeron also had a ton of success at USC as an interim. Again, elite program with unlimited resources. If Dabo had been at an MSU / OM, he probably had a Hugh Freeze type ceiling. Dabo is a far, far better coach than O ever thought about being though. Look at this year’s LSU team as evidence of that....even after all the alleged changes he’s made

The simple fact is you can’t just say if Croom were just an entirely different type of coach in an entirely different environment that he would have been successful....I mean while true it’s the ultimate Captain Obvious statement and is completely not feasible.. If my aunt had balls and what not.
