Today about 4 over Oxford and campus?
My wife saw and heard it...told people it reminded her of living on an Air Force base, many years ago. The sound of freedom!
Maybe F-18’s?

Didn’t see it, but the T-38s out of CAFB have been flying a lot in recent days.

There was a screamer that left out of JAN around 1:50 pm. <3000 feet headed East.

im in Shreveport. Barksdale AFB has been running the hell out of the B-52's. Daily flights, takeoff and landing practice. doing the damn thing. my office is not far from the runway, its insane to sit and watch it.

My daughter was a Kilgore Rangerette the past couple years. We went up for homecoming last year and they did a B52 flyover out of Barksdale. Most impressive flyover I have ever seen. Man, what a sight! I can't imagine being on the receiving end of what that thing can do.

Anybody here old enough to remember when Columbus was a SAC base and had B-52s? There were civilian areas not that far from the flight line. Those things would rattle your teeth when they cranked them up.

I was in the second pilot training class in the summer of '69. They still had alert B-52's and KC-135's. The first thing the wing commander did was to make sure the base wasn't off limits for the W girls...lots of crazed student pilots.

I got to see the space shuttle there some years ago. Had a a couple friends that were bomber trainers and they got me as close as they could get. It was one of those wow moments for me.

You should look up one of them "crabwalking", landing/taking off in extreme crosswinds. They are so long they are equipped with special landing gear that allows them to point the nose into the wind and much as possible while the gear still points parallel to the runway.

Not sure why a couple of Hornets would be around Oxford, unless they were flying crosscountry and had some mechanical problems. I figure they were T-38's from CAFB. When I lived in Starkville, the Friday before Cam Newton and Auburn came to town I saw a KC-130 refueling a pair of V-22's fly over. They were at several thousand feet but low enough to make out what they were. That was cool to see.

Saw a T-38 here today (fast and loud), presumably either from Columbus or perhaps the ANG from B'ham (was painted camo). Astronauts occasionally fly them here, or did before Covid, but they're painted differently. Military traffic at the airport is not unusual - quite a few come here for practice - long runways, fairly isolated so it's safe, not really busy commercially, and within flying distance of military units in Memphis, Columbus, and B'ham ANG. There was a P-3 Orion making approaches and T&G yesterday. Haven't noticed any increase in activity lately though - maybe the ones you guys saw were somehow supporting last night's debate in Nashville. One aircraft that I've never seen at the airport is a B-52.

Yes. Columbus AFB was a pretty major player at the time. Not sure about now.

It’s a huge training base now. They fly T-38s , T-6 Texan 2s, and T-1 Jayhawks. Combat aircraft are no longer stationed there to my knowledge.

I really enjoy the B-52. it has been in service 68 years. The last B-52’s were produced in 1962. They have been a solid & adaptable weapons delivery platform for an unreal length of time.

Evidently this area is in a flight path for Apache's. I've them multiple times over Starkville and was at work right beside GTR when five fully armed Apache's came in to refuel. Something else I would not want to be on the receiving end of.

My Dad worked at CAFB until 1990 but I don’t recall them having B-52’s stationed there. He would take me out there a lot and we would just walk around as close to the flight line as possible so I could see the planes.
I do remember going out there just about every year for the Open House and Air Show and there was a B-52 there during one OHouse that I saw.
Lots of T-38’s and T-37’’s flown out of CAFB over the years tho.

The Apaches were probably from here in Tupelo. They’ve got a facility here that keeps them.

Few years ago there was an F18 that would land & take off here. Saw it a couple of times while out running. He’d take off & go straight up. Loud as hell. I was told the pilot had family in the area that he’d stop to see. No clue if that’s true - had no idea pilots could do that. Maybe he was refueling here and used that as an excuse to land?

I've seen that F-18 there on one of the times I was drug to the flea market.
