might not win another game. Isn't Andy Dalton's fault but I think Jameis Winston woulda been the better backup signee for them.

Do you think any of those 17ers that told me Dak was a mediocre quarterback and not worth the big money might have a change of mind by the end of the season?

So overrated. They can run block ok, but pass blocking is another story. Turnovers galore

PineGrove gave me a link to a Dallas forum that was even worse than Twitter. They had a thread multi page long that started before the game that said there was no difference between Dak and Dalton, and furthermore, he wasn't even worth the money he was offered this season.

Didn't age well but it is a great microcosm into the fans I have to deal with here in Texas and maybe you can understand why I hope he can leave, but I want the best for him whatever.

The Cowboys can put the franchise tag on him again, right?

I wouldn’t be too surprised if that happened if possible.

It would absolutely be the best thing for the Cowboys and a spit in the face to Dak. Dak wants a short term contract so he can hit the market again in his prime.

Well at least they can run block.............there are teams out there that with only 3 DL lined up against them and extra wide splits that can't get a RB or a QB to rush for 3 yds at a time.............

Yes. No doubt they will tag him again.

They absolutely will not unless they want 100% assurance that 2021 is his last season in Dallas. Actually, that being said, they probably will do it. Whatever is the complete opposite of a smart roster management decision is what you can expect Jerry to do.

For the #1 draft pick. Which I’m assuming they could trade for a few first round picks and O-linemen if they play their cards right.

Not sure if serious. They are still leading their division. And stunningly, they might still win it because Andy 17ing Dalton might actually be playing at the highest level of any QB in the division since Wentz has been so bad this season.

1st draft pick will come down to Jets, Giants, WFT, Falcons, and Jags. I think the Jets are the runaway leader as the Bell release and keeping Adam Gase clearly shows they are actively trying to lose. I expect all those teams to be drafting ahead of Dallas, along with several others.

The Jets are so bad they haven't even covered the spread in their first six games. I don't think that's happened in the last 7-8 years. Trevor Lawrence should think about staying at Clemson one more year just to avoid them.

Yep, Dallas is in a world of hurt. A lot of people keep pointing to the massive Zeke and Cooper contracts as being the problem, and those people aren’t wrong, but you also have to recognize that over 20% of their cap is tied to an overrated O line that simply can’t stay healthy. There is no stat out there that would indicate that the Dallas line has been anything but above average since 2016, but they’re paid like they’re the best blocking line in the league. Then, even if they are that good when healthy, they can’t stay healthy.

So you combine all that with the fact that they’ve been side stepping the contract for their most important player for 2 years now, and they’ve got a massive problem. The defense needs multiple pieces, Zeke could very well already be showing signs of a drop off, and Coop will begin getting paid next year like he’s the best damn receiver in the league. I’m not even sure he’s the best on the team any longer as Lamb continues to shine.

Dallas has long term cap issues culminating from a lot of poor roster decisions by Jones, and Dak’s injury may end up serving as a blessing in disguise if it results in him getting the hell out of there.

I forget not everyone is in an NFL market and doesn't get the exposure to NFL talk 24/7. The Cowboys will be crippled if they franchise Dak next year. Franchise tags are a 100% cap hit. Long term deals are structured where that is not the case. The 2nd tag will be for $37.5 million or so. The salary cap is expected to come down $23 million next year to $175 million.

View attachment 18404

With a franchise tag, the Cowboys will be allocating 21% of the entire cap to Dak if he is tagged. He will be the highest cap hit in history in terms of real dollars and percentage. He is already the Highest cap hit in the NFL this year at $31+ million... Just over 15%.

Here is the active look at percentage of cap (Dak doesn't show up on the list because he's on IR, but his salary still counts)

View attachment 18405

Dallas has to either sign Dak to a long term deal or let him walk.

Correct, and based on what I’m seeing, I believe that the Cowboys are already $2M over the projected 2021 cap before even considering Dak’s next deal. So they’re going to have to make some major roster moves either way in order to free up capital, but a $38M tag would absolutely make it dang near impossible.

It’s crazy... almost as if prioritizing a RB and WR before the most important position in football may not be the wisest move

Cooper deal was not terrible... Jaylon Smith and Zeke are just terrible. Demarcus Lawrence is looking pretty bad too. I think Jerry/Stephen have no choice at this point. After last night, they must realize that it will take years to rebuild the defense and the only chance to win is through the arm of a QB that can make chicken salad.

Mahomes, Wilson, and Rodgers can do it, but you can't sniff them. Josh Allen and Watson have a little something, but you can't get them either and Dak is better. Brady and Brees are older than Romo and will retire this year or next.

So it's either pay Dak and build around him or draft a new QB and completely start over.

My guess is Jerry will let Dak walk and sign Cam Newton for 10% less than he could get Dak and the Cowboys will have another decade of mediocrity.***

They are only 2 games ahead of the jets, and one game ahead of those other teams, and they don’t have a QB, O-line, or a defense and they have McCarthy at coach. Will they finish last? Probably not, but there is a chance.

Before the game last night the cameras panned the crowd, there were Jersey wearers everywhere, but no #4’s. I thought that was really weird. But once the game was pretty well out of hand they started showing the crowd again. But this time almost every Jersey wearer they showed was wearing a #4. I found that awfully weird, but it was when the commentators had started talking about Daks value to the team and league. Just thought I’d share. I am glad they started breaking down Daks value to the team as a whole. I hope Jerry was listening, because he should’ve paid Dak with a contract. The Joneses could have a real good dynasty if they’d manage the team outside of the family and just enjoy.

The Cooper deal was absolutely atrocious. Yeah, he probably got paid what the market would dictate, so just looking at it by itself it isn’t too bad. What makes it atrocious is both the timing and the other moves that were made in parallel. They gave Cooper a top contract, then turned around and spent a mid-1st round pick on a WR who could give them the same production. They did it before they extended their QB, which is just crazy. The correct way to handle the “Big 3” in Dallas would have been to tell Zeke to go 17 himself with his demands, let him play out his contract, maybe tag him once, then let him walk. Then you extend Dak, then you extend Cooper.

As far as the cap going down by $23 million, I’ll believe that when I see it. The cap normally goes up 10% per year or so, is going up even more with the next CBA and the longer season schedule and expanded playoff. So, a $23 million decrease is essentially equal to about a $40-$50 million hit if you assume no increase in number of games, due strictly to COVID reducing in person attendance for (hopefully) just one season.

It’s a huge stretch. First off, 2 games ahead of the Jets is probably enough even if they don’t win another game. The Jets are staring 0-16 in the face. Secondly, they still have 5 games left against their awful division, plus games against 1-5 Minnesota and 1-4-1 Cincinnati. They are going to win 2 or 3 of those at an absolute bare minimum. Then there are 3 games against possible contenders (Baltimore / Pitt / SF) in which they will probably be underdogs, but might could steal one of since they have the offensive weapons to keep up with most teams.

Overall, there are a total of 10 teams in the league with a worse record than Dallas, and 3 or 4 more with a 2-3 record, only a half-game or so ahead of Dallas partially due to having a bye. If Dallas is “in contention” for the #1 pick, then so is half of the NFL.

ETA: The combined record of teams that have beaten Dallas is 17-6, so keep in mind that they aren’t losing to scrubs. The Cowboys are the same team they have been for 25 years....just good enough to keep the fans interested, not nearly good enough to even sniff an NFC championship runner-up, not nearly bad enough to get a Top 5 pick in the first round. And that’s what they will always be as long as Jerry is alive.

The Cooper deal was a lot better than you think. $10 million signing bonus spread over 5 years. $10 million salary this year and $20 million in 2021. That is all that is guaranteed if the Cowboys don't like the way it's going. Cooper actually signed at a discount on a team friendly deal to stay in Dallas.

https://www.dallasnews.com/sports/cowboys/2020/03/18/cowboys-contract-for-wr-amari-cooper-a-shrewd-compromise/

The game plan going into the draft was Cooper #1 and Gallup #2.. then a drop off to your other receivers. The fact that Lamb was available at 17 was silly. He was a top 5 talent. Now you have the best 1-2-3 WR group in the NFL for $15.5 mn this year and $26.5 mn next.

Cooper was #8 in yards in the league last year and is #6 this year (Lamb is #7.) The Cowboys have the best WR situation in the NFL.

Now if you want to blast the GM... It should start and end on defense. With the Zeke mixed in.... While the Cowboys are paying less than $16 mn this year to Cooper, Gallup, and Lamb combined... They are paying $32 million for Lawrence, Crawford, Jaylon Smith, and Everson Griffen. They have combined for a whopping 3 sacks and zero turnovers.

36.3 points a game. That's what the Dallas defense is giving up this year. They are on pace for the worst NFL defense in history.

I agree with most of your take, but I like the Cooper deal and think he and Dak should have been a package deal. Lamb was just a windfall in the draft.

Also, if you ever go to an NFL game you won't balk at the lost revenue figures to drag the cap down so much. $50 to park and $200 seats... It's easily $150 per person to attend in the cheap seats. Add in suite revenue and advertising... it's a big piece of the pie. The NFL creates 38% of it's revenue off of attendance.

The thing with the Cooper deal is he entered the season only finishing in the Top 10 WR’s for 2 out of his 5 years in the league, and even those two years he was only 8th / 9th or so. I also get that Lamb was considered a bargain where he was, but it was maybe the most loaded WR draft ever. You’re telling me they couldn’t have grabbed Claypool or Shenault in the 2nd (or maybe even traded up to grab Tee Higgins) and not gotten similar production to Lamb? They needed immediate help on defense and OL, and didn’t get it.

And I’ve also attended many NFL games. My point was they are trying to recoup all the lost revenue from COVID in one fell swoop, and I’m not sure how well that is going to go over with the owners considering that many are still allowing 25% attendance (and charging a premium to do so). They can level that hit off over 3 or 4 years. How the NFLPA feels about that is also going to be interesting. Not saying it won’t go down by that much, but there are a lot of hoops to jump through before that happens.

Fair enough on your Cooper take. To me he's a #5-10 WR in the league and I never hold what happens in Oakland against someone. The only way to get a top 10 WR is to draft in the top of the first, hit on a flyer, or overpay a free agent.

Cooper could be top 5 if he had a little more attitude, but he is what he is. I think they were perfectly fine without drafting a WR until later in the draft... But I love the pick. Only QB's, left tackles, and edge rushers have more value than a WR. Chase Young was the only player I saw that I was sure was a better player than Lamb in the draft. Riggs and Jeudy would not have kept me from going away from need, but Lamb is DeAndre Hopkins reborn.

They struck a deal with the NFLPA that the salary cap would have a floor of $175 million this year. That way they can get it all done before the new CBA. Everyone feels pretty good about that being the cap next year.
