All I know about this year's Finals is that the self proclaimed GOAT whose name rhymes with The Brown Shades walked off the court before a game was over; a total ***** move reminiscent of another *****-*** move by a punk player in the 90's whose name rhymes with Insane Adonis.

This is not to defend the NBA and i dont know
how these ratings are calculated but ive always wondered if 60 minutes benefits greatly from
following an NFL game.

It is bound to benefit from that. And in an election year, news products typically get a bump. Heard a sports media expert say the other day that as the NBA and NHL plan for their next season, they would be wise to avoid either reaching into the fall again. Nobody wants to compete with the NFL unless they have to.

No idea, but anyone even remotely interested isn't going to pick 60 minutes over an NBA final, even if they wandered in on accident on the heels of an NFL game. Anecdotally, I have a mid-20' adult son who was eating dinner with me the night of the finals and left right after to "go watch the game". I had to ask him what game. So my don't care hasn't translated to him. I can honestly say that he and I have never watched 1 minute of NBA games together on TV. We did go to New Orleans to watch the Pelicans once because a bunch of friends were going.

The Stanley Cup ratings were down 60%, the MLB divisional series were down 40%, the Kentucky Derby was down 45%, the US Open Tennis was down 45%. They didn't have "Vote" and "Black Lives Matter" written on the jerseys or playing surfaces though. So, people keep conveniently leaving them out of this discussion. The reason NBA's ratings are selectively highlight is because it's important for people to get the message out that speaking out on racial issues will cost you financially. That's the important point. It's a dog-whistle.

I saw a tweet the other day that said YTD the NBA Playoffs were 7 of the top 20 most viewed sports programs of the year, excluding Monday Night Football. That's the same number as the NBA landed in 2019. But, again, that doesn't support the "Go Woke, Go Broke" narrative. So, can't let that get in the way.

For context, last year's NBA Finals Game 6 between the Golden State Warriors and Toronto Raptors delivered 18.34 million viewers, while Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls drew 36.9 million in 1998 for their Game 6 victory over the Utah Jazz.

I didn't "conveniently" leave anything out. I didn't research anything. I saw an interesting sports related headline and posted it. Then you whatabouted it...

Don’t go using any facts, the SJW’s don’t like it when you bring real objective evidence into the conversation. Jordan was a very smart man and 10 times the player Lebron. Remember when he was asked to make a political statement and refused? I think his statement was “republicans buy sneakers also”!

The nba has also never had to go up against the NFL on any night until now. Dilution has been a huge issue in these ratings

I will say this, I don’t envy the task put before Adam Silver. If he can get the fans to come back while his biggest star is regularly pissing off half of the potential fans he deserves a big fat raise and a bonus.

I know big basketball fans that played college basketball that did not watch any NBA games this year after the re-opening night following lockdown. These are people who used to have NBA final parties with 50+ people and catered food and all.

Dilution is a valid possibility. 60 minutes was about on pace with average viewership. We can assume those folks just aren't gonna miss it and that other sports fans simply watched things besides the NBA. Perhaps that is just telling about what the NBA means vs NFL vs NHL? It may just not be the #1 draw for a lot of people and they would have watched had it not been up against all the others. I just thought it was an interesting comparison.

All of that may be true but the nba hurt themselves and it has a lot to do with politics/wokeness.

If you want fans back, you have to get the tribalism back. It's that simple. I think most people aren't watching due to the fanless situation, thus no real spirit and passion, in addition to the social justice stuff, which just kills off any remaining interest. Some of it may drive people to watch because they want Lebron to lose, but the ratings are still down, so that's obviously not enough. You either have to get players in there that people like, or get some type of city vs. city rivalry going, market to the communities, etc.

I think the best, and most underutilized, tool in all of this is using a sports franchise (or a college team) as the 'pride' of an area/city/state and an economic driver. Put that out there. That can invoke some city/state/region pride and us vs. them. People really need to feel involved. Bear Bryant knew this, that's why he went to all the small towns across Alabama and had all the blue collar workers donate money to the program, and it would be a source of pride for them, which still exists to this day.

Just throwing sports out there as entertainment is shallow. But there again, we live in a shallow culture right now. Maybe it fits. I mean come on, if you put politics in it, you'll even kill Olympic competition. See the women's soccer team a few years ago. That could have been the pride of a nation but nobody gave a damn because of the politics of it. And dumb politics too.

Imagine Lebron just sticking to his roots and helping the communities around Cleveland. Instead he spouts politics from his Twitter while he's flittering around in LA. Think of the massive source of pride that was for Cleveland, when he finally got it right after going to Miami. That's what's missing.

Not only that, a healthy pro sports system attracts fans from all over the world. See the EPL.

1- The NBA game went up against Sunday Night NFL. Its never had to do that and ratings will obviously be impacted.
2- Traditional major viewed sports have been hit hard with lower viewership numbers- NBA, NHL, MLB all impacted. It appears many viewers havent gotten into the groove of watching live sports as frequently as before.
3- The NBA Finals were not interesting to me, and I am a basketball junkie. I can only imagine how ambivalent sidewalk viewers were.
4- Many people have turned away from the NBA because the NBA has been front and center and actively pushing for racial equality to be at the front of everyone's minds. Some have turned away because they genuinely want to just watch a game be played and escape reality. Some have turned away because they are closeted racists. Some have turned away because they dont like athletes or celebrities to voice opinions unless those opinions align with the person's views/beliefs.

These reasons and more have led to a ratings slide.
Thank god the NBA season is over so I dont have to read any more articles that link why NBA viewership is down with reasons that link directly to the writer's social and political views.

I can’t say I quit this year as I quit watching several years back. I was a big Jordan fan and when he left it was just never the same to me.

Also the game has changed so much all the flopping and no real defense being played either. It looks like everyone just hands it to their best athlete and he tries to one on one beat the other teams best athlete to the basket. That style of game is just not appealing to me. I admire how incredible the athletes are, but just don’t find the new style game interesting any longer.

PS - Lebron can win 20 titles and he will never match Jordan as an ambassador of the game. Jordan’s last dance documentary greatly outperformed the NBA in ratings this year.

You means facts like this was the first NBA Finals to go against Sunday Night Football and Playoff baseball or the fact that Sports Media Watch contradicts this right-wing rag's numbers?

https://www.sportsmediawatch.com/20...ngs-lakers-heat-game-6-sunday-night-football/

8.9 Million is still low, but let's be honest about the effect having multiple sports playing on the same night has on ratings over whatever political narrative you're trying to push.

Yeah yeah yeah, I know... you haven't watched the NBA since Kevin McHale retired. Here's a cookie to go along with that badge.

Yes, it shows that you stopped watching several years back. Successful offenses continually move the ball, force the defense to overload, kick it out to open shooters, and make the extra pass. Ive noticed that it seems like there are more turnovers in the last couple years due to teams trying to make one too many passes, actually.
You have missed a lot of sharing of the ball.

Look I’m not here to argue about player legacies because I might share some of your sentiments, but you are absolutely terrible at rhyming. Next time spend the extra 15 seconds to come up with something like...

There was an interesting discussion on Squawk Box at sports TV ratings and Dr Patrick Rishe who is director of the sports business program at Wash U in St. Louis said that while some weren’t watching because of social issues, the number is actually not significant. I assume he has data to back it up.
