I apologize for the delay on this. My company observes the federal holidays so with today being Columbus Day, I took the kids to daycare then came back and slept like I was back in college. And man was it good.

Onto the "show" we put on this past Saturday.

Ugly. Just ugly. You know, awful may even be a better term. Let's take a look Swede's plan to win.

Play Great Defense - I think defense had another stellar night. Not perfect by any means but showed again that they're something we can depend on. We held Kentucky to 157 total yards on Saturday. My brain keeps having to control-alt-delete itself to try to wrap around how we lost that game given that stat. Kentucky averaged 2.6 yards per carry. Defense balled out again on Saturday. They deserve what little credit we have to give.

Score in the Redzone - Given the fact that we didn't even score a TD or a FG, obviously this is a big fat F. We were in the redzone 3 times. We did not score any of those times. We've got to capitalize when we are in the redzone.

Play Great Special Teams - I have high standards for us when it comes to special teams. Not sure if it's because I'm still salty from Saturday or not but this is an F. Reason being is that we had 2 touchbacks from punting. Not an overly huge deal but pinning them deep both of those times could have really helped us in the field position battle. We averaged 55 yards per punt which is great and all, but you guys know me well enough to know that I don't think distance is everything. I view our kickers and punters like snipers. When they're name is called, they take the shoot and take care of business. They make the field goal. They put that ball on the 5 with guys waiting for it. I know Ruiz had a long field goal he left short. The reason we attempted it is because he's made them in practice (I guarantee you). So point being, if you're going to make them in practice, make them in them in the game. (We talking 'bout practice man)

Win the Turnover Battle -I harped on a lot of things above but let's all not kid ourselves, this is the reason we lost the game. 6 interceptions. No one is going to win throwing 6 picks. My question is how are we going to coach our QB's and WR's to protect the ball better? If we're going to do the Air Raid, we have got to protect the ball.

Misc Thoughts:

  • Seems like when we get down on the scoreboard, we always have to scramble and figure something out. If we're going to play a system where we go for the jugular, we have got to take a page out of the Art of War and attack first and with a vengeance. Our first drive should be 7 points every single time. We've got to put the other team on their heels. Reason I say this is because when the other team starts dominating the time of possession battle, it puts us in a bad spot to where we have to start taking chances.
  • Costello - he's got to start taking what the defense gives him. I'll be surprised if we don't see anything else but rushing 3 and dropping 8 the rest of the year. This isn't new to Leach. I believe his offense works within this type of look. Costello may also be battling some mental demons. He balled out against LSU and now all of the sudden he may think he needs to drop 600 on everybody. It's an easy trap to fall into. It's hard to coach that type of thing out of a player's mind.
    • I'm on the fence as to whether we should be playing Rogers or even Schrader at the QB position. There's great points on both sides. Right now, I'm of the opinion that if Costello starts taking what the defense gives him, we'll be alright. The question is if that happens. Regardless, I'm not going to be opposed of putting Rogers in there. Rogers showed some real promise on Saturday.

In closing, I still think we're in a better spot with Leach. We may have some growing pains this year. We may also have some discipline issues on the team that Moorhead left. That's something we don't really see so it's hard to say but it can certainly derail a good team. I wonder if that's what Leach was alluding to in his post game press conference.

The joys of being a State fan right?

P.S. hopefully next year when COVID subsides, I'll let you chaps know when I'm coming to a home game. Would love to meet some of you and have a beer. And maybe share some fun stories that aren't appropriate on here.

Hail State. On to the fighting Jimbo's.

A team must be able to muscle up (when called for)

and play smash mouth football in this league. I haven't seen much sign of that by the Dogs.

LSU should agree.

These last 3 years have convinced me we have the worst fans in the Conference. JoMo was a great hire on paper, but did not translate to the field. Should he have been let go: yes. But the amount of vitriol thrown at him and his family is beneath anything I ever thought I would see from our fanbase. So we hire a coach who not only looks good on paper, but is a HR hire. Three games in to a titanic culture change we have our idiot fanbase out screaming for him to be fired as well as Cohen. Again, idiots who sell womens shoes, perform lawn services and stock colas on shelves are ready to fire a top 10 coach, becausethey know so much. Moorehead left a mess, and with no Spring Practice, a new QB, a titanic shift in culture, our fans have decided that it is now time for a change.

Who's to blame?

Cohen? No he replaced a guy who was named the top assistant in college football ready to be a HC with a true top 10 coach.

Leach? No he will get us going, just probably not this year?

Keenum? He is the one that nixed a deal with Napier when JoMo beat OM. When he fired him after the bowl, Napier wanted no part of us.

Our fans? You have no clue how to support a program. You let expectations brought about by Dan to color your view. Dan took us to the Liberty, St Pete, Music City, Belk, Gator etc. A bunch of minor bowls that most actually enjoyed. But going to one NY6 made everyone think we arrived.

Look in the mirror. Your constant bitching is killing us.

One of the biggest issues that I have seen is Costello would rather throw a 10 yard pass into double coverage rather than run for the 4 yards in front of him. Multiple times they have had an easy first down but instead threw a pass. Costello even crossed the line of scrimmage once and could have made the first down but threw it instead which drew a penalty.

If the defense is going to drop back like that, we need to take those 5 yards with a QB run if necessary. Minshew would take those free yards at WSU and the defense would eventually have to account for it. It wasn't called QB runs but just a QB scrambling.

Our inability to block 3 rushers with 5 o-line is a huge red flag to me. I'm not one to call names but our right side of the o-line continually got beat all night. When the defensive guy takes 2 good steps and is already even with or past the shoulder pads of the o-line guy you have lost that battle.

I mentioned something along these lines last week, but poor O line play and turnovers are the two things that I just can't wrap my head around. You'd have thought that Kentucky had Jeff Simmons, Chris Jones, and Montez Sweat on the field Saturday night with the way they were consistently blowing through or around our 5-man line. That just can't happen, and the fact that it kept repeatedly happening is problem #1 as to why the entire Air Raid scheme is a shipwreck right now.

With the turnovers piece, I get that it's the most obvious thing in the world to say that turnovers are a big problem for us. However, it's not the sheer fact that we're turning the ball over that is perplexing. The mystifying thing is that we're turning the ball over constantly while doing little other than dump it down to a RB or hit a receiver 8 yards downfield on a crossing route. You just can't turn the ball over like that while running a conservative version of your offense. It's baffling

Based on what you've seen so far, do you see the ship getting turned around this season? i.e. at least getting to 4 wins?

This is the problem. Put a qb in that is willing to get 4 or 5 yards. I promise defenses will stop dropping 8

You don't know about the SPS tailgate? Good times indeed. HD6 will bring some pork loin, DS will bring some Fratesi Red Sauce, and DCD will be banning people trying to get in. Just look for the blue tent.

After watching Costello run a few times, I am not sure that he could have gotten the 4 yards before someone got to him from 10-12 yards away. I still think he could get his head straight and be a good quarterback, but if we are depending on him to run at all, we are in deeper trouble than I thought.

I realize LSU is bad defensively, but that game is proof that we can be hell on wheels for a defense if they run anything other than "rush three drop eight".

So the key is to force them out of "rush three drop eight". And how you do it is not really complicated, and frankly it's what we are already try to do in many ways. We have to block better, and we have to be able to not make idiotic decisions or consistently make bad throws and simply just take what they are giving us. This kind of defense is going to give you five yards for free on almost every play. Be smart and patient enough to take it, and don't miss guys when they are open. Put a few consecutive scoring drives together doing that and teams will be forced to change it up, and that's when we can get back to what we are clearly better at in the passing game.

It's very cliché to say "execute the little things", but that would make a massive difference for this team. We don't do the little things well at all right now on offense. Timing, decision-making, accuracy, etc. You name it, we suck at it.

I agree with your general premise about fan expectations and overreactions. But no need to denigrate people who make an honest living, doing the jobs that, while not glamorous, are necessary. Not everybody can enjoy a six-figure income performing medical procedures on cats. You're an ***.

Your take is a terrible one.

These guys are getting paid millions to coach a kid's game. Some of that money comes from donations from guys who work for lawn services, sell women's shoes, or stock cola. Many of those people give more than they can really afford because they love their school.

Joe Moorhead was a good man but a terrible head coach. Most people can separate the two. When he took this job, he understood that there were expectations (most of which he set with his "ring size" comments), and there's also intense scrutiny that comes with the job. Same for Leach - our expectations went nuclear after beating LSU and since then we look like a freakin' bad private school while making Arkansas and Kentucky look like the New England Patriots.

If it offends your sensibilities to hear someone criticize a coach, maybe you should go hang out with the blue hairs on gene's page.

I don't think it was the bluntness as much as the smugness. If you think you are better than the guy stocking shelves, you went to the wrong school. The bitching hasn't thrown all of the pick sixes. My main frustration is that I haven't seen the culture change I was expecting. I am willing to give it time, watching it is hard though.

Pass from across the LOS?

Ha! I was screaming at the TV - "Don't throw the ball!" when he did it. I could tell he was still going to cross the LOS and still throw the ball when he was still 2 yards on the correct side of the line. That is an 8 year old league mistake. I do understand it is only one of many he had made so far this year.

Does this have anything to do with Swede's post? Or just bitching out loud?

If you're going to blame the team's ****** play on the fans, at least do it in your own thread so I can scroll past easier.
