What???? Like Dallas releases him and the Saints sign him????

Hopefully no ligament damage. I feel so bad for Dak. He worked so hard this offseason to become an ELITE QB. He's the 3rd best QB in the league: Mahommes, Wilson then Dak I'd say.

Like getting him away from a dysfunctional franchise that doesn't appreciate him. Dallas was great because of potential endorsement opportunities, but it probably is not good for his long term success on the field.

I agree. I'm a Saints fan. Been saying a few weeks Saints need to trade, move up in draft, do something in FA to get a good QB and I was hopeful for Dak. I know Dallas can tag him if they want, but if Dak became an UFA, you'd have to think in New Orleans wanted him, he'd give them a serious look. I would think being QB for the Saints would be attractive to Dak.

That would be a hilarious self-fail if Dallas refused to negotiate a market deal with Dak and then had to franchise him (and pay him what, $40M next year?) as he's coming off a serious injury.

I'm thinking this is it for Dak in Dallas. If I were him, Dallas's option would be to franchise me, or give me the originally requested deal with no discount for being injured (and also one year shorter to reflect that he's already paid a year), or I'd be going elsewhere. The only question I have is if he's unrestricted at this point? Will other teams have to give up draft picks to sign him? Thath would obviously negatively impact his value and put him in a position where he has to weaken a team to get signed there, which might hurt later.

At this point, he can still get the Deshaun Watson deal (4 years / $160 million) as his minimum. He’ll have no worse of an injury history than Watson, and is an objectively better QB at this point it seems. There’s no way I can see him staying in Dallas if Jerry tries to use the injury against him in contract negotiations, especially after paying him like $6 million total for his first 4 years and the moderate degree of bad blood that’s no doubt already there from Jerry not giving him a fair market offer for 2 years running. It would be an absolute poison pill.. Tagging him again would likely achieve the same result, it would just delay the inevitable and cost an unreal amount of money for a glorified farewell tour. We’re about to see just how dysfunctional this franchise really is.

Each team is allowed one Franchise Tag to any player they want that prevent that player from becoming an UFA even if that player is scheduled to become one, so Dallas holds the cards. This is what the Redskins did several years in a row to Kirk Cousins if I'm not mistaken.

There are some really awesome Dallas fans telling Dak he should have slid so breaking his ankle was his fault and he doesn't have a contract because he is not a top QB but he wanted top money and was greedy so they have no sympathy for him.

I am really hoping my wish might come true with this event. Jerry gets enamored with some college QB and listens to the Dallas fandom and lets Dak go free agent. Chicago sings him and dumps Trubiskey's and Foles's contractS on another team to help pay for it and picks up a backup in the draft. The Chicago fandom would love Daks work ethic and having a competent QB.

Hey! I can dream.

Of course they hold the cards, but it would still be incredibly stupid for them to pay $40 million for just one year of security at the QB position. Do the math on that....it would work out to $72 million for 20.5 games played in the regular season, and then Dak would ride off into the sunset just like Cousins did. A third franchise tag would cost Dallas about $53 million too....so that ain’t happening either.

It would also be really stupid for them to wait until he got hurt and then offer him a market contract. If they weren't willing to pay him when he was healthy, what would make them change their mind and pay him now that he has a rehab ahead of him.

And if they took the position that the market is reset now that he is hurt, it'd be a pretty bitter pill to swallow for Dak to let them get a discount after refusing to offer him a market contract.

Just seems like this is the end for Dak in Dallas unless he just really wants to be there.

Why would you want to condemn Dak to playing in Chicago? High taxes and cold weather.

That’s true, but “waiting until he got hurt” is on them and is water under the bridge at this point. They now have two bad options and a third absolutely horrific option (letting him walk), all of which could have been avoided if they just offered him $35-$36 million per year for 4 years back in March, or $31-$32 million per year for 4 years before the 2019 season. And considering that bad option #1 very likely brings about horrific option #3 (just one year later) the only thing left is option #2 which is to give him a market deal after the injury.

And as to what would make them pay him after he got hurt when they wouldn’t before? That’s easy....franchise tag will be $6.3 million more in 2020 than it was in 2019, so they are gonna pay him around $40 million or more in 2021 either way. But at least the contract option lets both parties get security for 3 more years.

And if he’s running full speed again by July of 2021, which seems highly likely, that may be way more obvious as the correct decision. No way they’ll be able to leverage the injury at all if he’s already recovered before the franchise tag deadline.

How about the Colts? They don't have a long term plan at QB (Rivers is washed up). They have a great line and good running backs. Their defense is salty. That's a place where Dak could really shine if Dallas lets him walk.
