So, I noticed a new building the other day on north side of lake across from Sanderson center. It’s a large complex. Anybody know what this is

Looks like it is following the road into Campus Trails for a bit, and then runs right through the disc golf course. It's hard to tell from the plans, but I'm curious if any of the houses on East Drive have been bought by the university to tear down for extra space. Otherwise, those folks are about to have a heavily used road right up against their back property line.

There might still be a few baskets up, but that disc golf course essentially doesn't exist anymore.

RIP to Roffie Burt's survey field.

Spent a lot of time out there scratching my head trying to figure out significant digits, coefficients of thermal expansion, and how to throw a steel tape 20+ years ago.

The county also claims to be fixing Blackjack Road out that way. We will see.

RIP

Edited to add: It was 30 years ago for me. He had taught my Dad in the 60s. And in about 10 years of actual surveying work, I used a steel tape a few times, but never to the thousandths.

Mr. Burt looked like a picture of a surveyor you would see in an old World Book Encyclopedia. Perfect representation.

I haven't been out there since 2012ish, so I have no clue. Google maps still shows that it exists, so I assumed it was there.

I just missed classes with the legend but I can vividly remember trying to figure out how to throw a chain in the middle of that field also.

Can confirm. Not sure how far down the road they're working but there's work going on from the intersection at Stone, through the traffic circle and at least to the four houses on the hill between Hardy and Morrill.

They are going install a 3rd lane all the way to Bardwell Road. Not only is the road in terrible shape, the traffic is worse there than on 12 during rush hour due to people trying to get into Aspen Heights and not knowing the gate code and causing a back-up out into the road. I was just waiting for the day when someone down Blackjack needed an ambulance only to have the road blocked in both directions 10 deep in vehicles waiting to get past Aspen Heights.

38 years ago where the parking lot is now in front of and below The Dude, The Palmeiro Center and The Hump there was just a big grassy hillside. That's where Dr Hayes taught myself and classmates how to throw a tape. The old tripods were brass and wooden and heavy as hell and I'd love to have one of them today

me too. I still have nightmares about getting that old transit level in both directions.

Our survey team broke the steel tape. I about had a heart attack because

of the costs he listed in the handout at the beginning of the year stating how much the equipment cost if you broke it. Thankfully we only had to pay $5 a piece rather than the $500 listed! I still have my contour map I drew from the survey data for my triangle section over the Thanksgiving holidays.

Glad it wasn't just me, it was next to impossible to get those brass knobs to work like I wanted them to. You'd get one side level, rotate transit and when you finally got the other side right, the original side would be out then and you were back at the beginning.
