Anybody else like to see a package with Shrader

At QB when we get inside the ten. It becomes much more difficult to air raid at that point on the field due to less area to defend. I’d love to see it in our arsenal.

I would rather us have a couple of power runs included in our arsenal. I know, I know. Always pass, never run.

Not with Leach coaching. Costello takes all the snaps unless Rogers gets some in garbage time.

From what I remember we had two “goal to go” situations on Saturday and got one TD and one FG. The field goal came when Kylin was in the locker room, I feel like he would’ve definitely gotten the ball in that situation otherwise. Even so we probably should’ve had a TD on the third down scramble play, KJ didn’t see Williams wide open right in front of him.

Just need more of a sample size to see how the Air Raid will work inside the 10. We just killed LSU with long TDs so you didn’t see our goal line offense much at all.

I like winning games.

When you’re putting up 600 yards of total offense, just stay in the normal offense and run normal plays.

The only thing I thought we need to add is a little more creativity in the running game. Seems like we only have 1 running play and it’s a draw that Costello telegraphs

If we’re going to just run a draw as our running game, then play action off that draw here and there to at least keep the defense honest

I'd like to see him in the slot and hit with a pass behind the line and then he has the option to run or make a double pass.

That was the oddest play. I’m not sure what happened on defense, but Austin ran a classic goal line route and was standing about 7 yards in front of KJ with no defender within 10 yards of him. Basically a dream goal to go scenario executed to perfection

When KJ then proceeded to look right past him and lob the ball over his head into tight coverage, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. It’s crazy how a QB can completely block things from his field of vision once he finds a matchup that he likes

I think I’ll reserve my play calling inside the ten and defer to Leach. I’m pretty sure he’s thought about it more than I have. Hah

No. The only plays I want to see involving Shrader are with him in the slot when Payton needs a breather.

Maybe a lineman was between him and Austin. My bet is the coaches have emphasized that play to KJ for the future.

Leach will have to pry the idea of a run game from the cold dead hands of our fan base. Only tool he can use is wins.

All the people who say things like, "MiKe LeAcH sHoUlD rUn Da BaWl MoRe" have no idea who we hired. He isn't going to run more than has always done. We are not a running team anymore, end of discussion.

I think this is correct. It just goes against Leach's philosophy.

I do think a goal line package with Shrader would be very effective and would probably be better than the air raid once we got much past the ten. I think 20 yards of field is still enough for Leach's offense to work with. 15 yrds seems tight.

That said, I'm not sure what it costs us in practice time to work on that package enough for it to be better, and to what extent that will make an impact on our normal offense. I would assume with a team of veterans where the starters have all been in the system for at least a year, that wouldn't be a problem, as they wouldn't need as many reps each week. This year we probably are definitely better off with the air raid reps.

But I'm still not sure how that works with the OL. Can you really have a different goal line package without changing up their blocking approach? No clue how that works.

My only concern so far with the Air Raid ...

is what we do when up by 10 and 4 minutes to go with the ball. Against LSU it was pass. Of course incompletions stop the clock.
I was almost screaming at the tube last week to run the ball and milk the clock, up 10.

we were 4-4 in the red zone against LSU, but 3 of those were FG's. Only scored 1 TD out of 4 in the red zone.

We have the ability to line it up and run right at somebody this year. We may not always be like that depending on how we recruit OL and RB's in the future. I would like to see a package with Shrader as you say, but I'm not holding my breath.

I’m honestly kind of glad we don’t have a set of “cutesy” plays like this lined up. It was one of two complaints we had against Mullen and was almost all Moorhead had in his playbook. It’s kind of refreshing to see a basic inside slant route executed without having a QB having to do calculus to figure out if he should throw or run or having a 12 second play involving 4 people touching the ball in the backfield.

Leach ain’t taking his best QB off the field to make fans feel better.

Here are our four "red zone" possessions in the LSU game:

1 - On our second drive in the 1st Q, we had 1st and 10 from the 19-yd line. On 1st down, we run a draw with Hill for a gain of 4. On 2nd down, Costello drops back, can't find anybody open, and dumps it to Johnson for a 3-yd gain. 3rd down and 2 yards to go. On 3rd down, Costello drops back, nobody is immediately open and Costello is sacked at the 18-yd line. On 4th down, Ruiz kicks a 35-yd FG.

2- In the 3rd Q, we had 1st and goal at the 5-yard line. On 1st down, we ran Marks up the middle for 1 yard. On 2nd down, we threw a swing pass to Marks for a 2-yard loss. (On this play, Williams ran a quick corner route on the same side of the field and was wide-open in the end zone.) On 3rd down, nobody was initially open, Costello scrambled to his left and threw incomplete to Johnson near the back of the end zone. (On this play, if Costello had throw to Williams at the front of the end zone, then we most-likely would have scored a TD.) 4th and goal, Ruiz kicks a 24-yd FG.

3 - In the 4th Q, we had 1st and goal from the 10-yard line. On 1st down, incomplete pass to Marks . . . but LSU was called for pass interference . . . now 1st and goal from the 9. On 1st down, we line up Gardner outside and Williams inside on the left side of the field. Gardner runs a slant, Williams runs an out. Costello throws the out to Williams for a TD . . . perfect timing and perfect location with that ball.

4 - In the 4th Q, we had 1st and 10 from the 20-yard line. On 1st down, we hand off to Hill for a 6-yd gain. On 2nd down, #19 for LSU perfectly times his blitz. Costello throws incomplete; however, he is called for intentional grounding. We now have 3rd and 15 from the 25-yard line. Next play, Payton runs a 10-yd out and Costello overthrows him. On 4th down, Ruiz kicks a 43-yd FG.

Thus, in our four "red zone" possessions, we had 1 TD and 3 FG.

There's definite room for improvement, and bringing in Shrader near the goal line is a good idea.

I liked the slant-out play for our lone TD. Maybe we can keep running that play whenever we are around the 10-yard line. (We need a little room to run that play.)

Other options:
- crossing routes, with WRs "shallow" and "deep" in the end zone (if we have enough room to run the crossing routes)
- a fade rout to our tallest WRs, either Mitchell (6-5) or Shavers (6-6)
- let Spivey (6-5, 240) run to the goal line, then turn around and "box out" the DB
- hand it off to Hill and let him run it in

#5 (CB) for LSU had jumped to block the pass, and I honestly don't see how he didn't knock it down.

#5 was initially guarding Williams. When Costello started scrambling left, #5 came off Williams to tackle/pressure Costello. He was right on top of Costello, and he jumped when Costello threw the pass.

If Costello could have faked that pass and reloaded, then he could have easily thrown it to a wide-open Williams.

That's really easy for me to say five days after the game, but much more difficult for Costello to actually do in real time during the game.

Folks just don’t get it... you are not going to get him to change so quit trying. Let him play call period. Just enjoy the wins cause when it clicks it can’t be stopped.

I might want to see a package with Schrader where he is the starting quarterback, and our coach runs a spread/option offense.
