Fentanyl use has been on a drastic uptick everywhere. From patches to what this article mentions. I know several in their mid 20s-early 30s that have lost the fentanyl patch game in the last 5 yrs. Powerful stuff, and doesn't take much to give you a permanent nap.

A buddy of mine's brother died from a fentanyl overdose a few years ago. Pretty terrible stuff.

To the original poster - this isn’t an Oxford versus Starkville issue. That’s ridiculous. This is a humanity issue. And if it’s found it’s way to Oxford, it’s probably already in Starkville. And, sadly, it’ll just be a matter of time until another young life is taken away.

Show me where I said this was a Starkville vs Oxford issue. What is ridiculous, and the point I was making, is once again the leaders up there are trying to sweep negative news under the rug so no one will think badly of the place. It happens time and time again. There is no telling the things that actually never make it to the light of day and are successfully covered up.

You're damn right it's a humanity issue. That's why instead of the city leaders zipping their lips, they need to be shouting it from the rooftops. Instead, it took a parent of one of the kids who is now dead to say something about it and to warn other parents to talk to their kids about it. That is what is ridiculous. But hey, it's who they are. So I don't expect any different.

I knew drug use has always been bad up there, but I didn't know it was this bad. 11 overdoses this year alone, and I've heard there have been 2-3 in the past week that aren't in those numbers. Several posts on Facebook coming out from parents of kids saying town leaders have swept this under the rug to keep their quaint little hamlet from being tarnished. Just damn! That place really needs to be nuked. I know there is drug use in Starkville, but please tell me it's not this bad.

Doing drugs is stupid and leads to a path of death/disaster.

Any person who finds himself/herself on this path MUST do whatever it takes to get off of it.

Also, pandemic leading to social restrictions has a lot of young folks experimenting with things they never have before out of pure boredom- and I mean the ones who would’ve never dabbled in it when things were “normal.”
Nailed it. Drug abuse was here before COVID, but our reaction to it (i.e. restrictions, lock downs, cancellations, etc.) left a huge hole to fill in people's lives and mental health suffered for it. That's why the coronabros are some of the worst people out there. They willfully miss the forest for the trees.

That same situation DIRECTLY led to the overreactions to the police shootings too. There would have been some riots, but nothing like we saw, if life had been normal.

The whole deal was simply devastating for this country. The democrats will pay for them in November. I don't call it a 'lockdown' anymore because it wasn't any one entity that did it, it was the whole reaction, from media to government.

Fair enough. I read it as you saying that it was happening because of some cultural issue in Oxford. In full transparency, I read it in a hurry, that’s on me. So, I apologize.

I am no expert.

My understanding is many people are/were hooked on OxyContin, because of over prescribing, and needless prescribing by medical doctors, coupled with recreational use. If OxyContin is hard to get, they are forced to go to other drugs, one of which is heroin.

More and more heroin that is being sold is either fentanyl, or laced with fentanyl, because it is so potent, easy to get, and cheap. All of these (Potent, easy to get and cheap) make the drug everything a drug pusher wants. I do not do drugs, but if I did and especially if I was hooked, and a friend told me JoJo had some incredible stuff, I would find the guy and buy his product.

This has led to an abundance of fentanyl laced stuff on the street, some of it is formulated at "Safe" levels and some of it isn't. Even with pure unlaced heroin there are occasional uncut or poorly cut batches that make it to the street and people die. No one seems worried about a dirty junky *****, but we do worry about Brittany or Hunter trying it at a party, when we never knew they became hooked by sneaking Mom's oxycontin pulls that Dr. Frazier prescribed for her backache.

One last statement. Selling drugs is a business where you know some of your customers will die - maybe not today, or tomorrow - but eventually the drugs will kill them. If you can't live with that, you are a lousy pusher. Pushers are killers. It is that simple.

Thanks for letting me rant about one of the worse problems society has seen - ever.
