What the hell is going on in Oxford?

I knew drug use has always been bad up there, but I didn't know it was this bad. 11 overdoses this year alone, and I've heard there have been 2-3 in the past week that aren't in those numbers. Several posts on Facebook coming out from parents of kids saying town leaders have swept this under the rug to keep their quaint little hamlet from being tarnished. Just damn! That place really needs to be nuked. I know there is drug use in Starkville, but please tell me it's not this bad.

Fentanyl use has been on a drastic uptick everywhere. From patches to what this article mentions. I know several in their mid 20s-early 30s that have lost the fentanyl patch game in the last 5 yrs. Powerful stuff, and doesn't take much to give you a permanent nap.

What happen to the days of using a funnel to pour whiskey up the ***?

Not really in the drug game, but why would drug dealers be selling something that can cut off their supply of buyers?

Edit - obviously too much of any drug can cause you to OD and die, but this seems to be much less amounts/more potent to a point where if it just laces something you can be dead.

yea, just can't understand why anyone would gamble and temp fate with this stuff. My understanding from my friends in the medical field is that a slight miscalculation can be fatal.

Because it keeps many more folks coming back than it kills.

Fentanyl pipeline from Memphis. That's not speculation either. That's directly from a North MS narcotics agent.

You can’t win the party without sustaining collateral damage. ...and a lot of parties have been won in Lafayette County during my lifetime.

Part of it is just that there is an available supply. The US was has cracked down on pill mills, so pain killers have become more expensive while a supply of illegal fentanyl from China made it relatively cheaper.

They don't know what's in the drugs they're getting and in some cases the dealers aren't sure. Kids call up the dope man and ask for some rocks. They pay the man and don't test their drugs, so in reality they don't know what they're doing.

Dealers will intentionally lace some of their product

So it will kill someone from time to time. This makes other addicts think they are dealing stronger stuff. It’s a sick form of marketing.

Fentanyl is being sold as Heroine most of the time. Hard to tell the difference without a test kit. Most people are shooting it up.
It's a rally bad problem in the Denver metro area.

I've enough surgeries to know what a kick this crap has. I can't imagine why someone would play with this drug but folks screw around with the big H.

FedEx Memphis Hub is loaded with DEA and drug sniffing dogs...Most FBI offices have an agent with FedEx uniform to make deliveries of suspected drugs. Surprise!

The vast majority of opioid deaths are due to fentanyl. The opioid crisis largely arose with the rise of that drug.

The war on opioids made regular pain meds hard to get, even on the black market. Created a huge black market demand. China mass produced fent for dirt cheap. Mid to high level operations are using the cheap fent to press their own “pain pills”. You think you’re buying percs, you’re getting pressed fent marketed as percs. These street pill mill operations are not a lab and these fent mixes are often inconsistent so the dose varies pill to pill. Get the wrong one and it will kill you. This isn’t only in north MS or Oxford, this is a nationwide problem.

Fentanyl laced drugs are running rampant all throughout MS right now. I’ve lost two classmates (C/O 2012) on the coast this week from laced Xanax Bars.

My guess is that a big distributor is making tons of money in our state right now. State/Federal law enforcement needs to crack down big time.

Also, pandemic leading to social restrictions has a lot of young folks experimenting with things they never have before out of pure boredom- and I mean the ones who would’ve never dabbled in it when things were “normal.”

This I can believe. I've been concerned about overall mental health in this county since this thing started. A lot of people are bored, restless, or scared and have been for months. I think a lot of what we're seeing now is at least partially a result of that, especially with politicians on both sides fanning the flames.

I’ve heard a DEA agent talk at a conference about the fentanyl additives. Says some of the fentanyl they’re adding was made only as a tranquilizer for large animals like elephants and rhinos. And there’s forms that are even ten fold stronger than that.
Said they’ll find people dead from an overdose. And the pill is still in their mouth because it basically killed them as soon as it touched their mucosal surfaces.

It existed before COVID and it will exist after COVID. This is one that can't be blamed on it.

This appears to be a situation where someone is just evil and thinks it’s funny. In all likelihood, many of these dealers probably have no clue they’re selling that to them.

To the original poster - this isn’t an Oxford versus Starkville issue. That’s ridiculous. This is a humanity issue. And if it’s found it’s way to Oxford, it’s probably already in Starkville. And, sadly, it’ll just be a matter of time until another young life is taken away.

BS. Covid and all of the lock downs have led to more overdoses. There are stats out there to prove it

Can anyone make sense of this bit:

"McCutchen said since the department now knows that fentanyl is on the streets, the risk of drug use is much greater."

Isn't that like basically saying, “because these drugs exist, there’s a much greater chance they’ll be used.” And I thought they were supposed to have a decent journalism school. It must be as crappy as ever thang else up thar.

Get Meeks, pronto! What? He's too busy posting pics and secretly getting off to streetwalkers on facebook? No, can't be! Denial does run deep.

Anyone else ever read Terry Southern's short story "Twirling at Ole Miss"? From the 60's and does as fine a job skewering, hilariously, the "culture" up there as any you'll find. Terry Southern also wrote Dr. Strangelove, Cincinnati Kid, co-wrote Easy Rider, and a whole lot more both movie related and unrelated.
