Seems odd to opt out at this point especially since nobody is losing a year of eligibility

Is it me, or would CFB have been better off having an opt out deadline like the NFL did? Pretty much nobody who is opting out at this point is doing so for COVID related reasons. Players have had plenty of time to digest their personal risk factors (of themselves, family / friends, etc.), and plenty of time to decide if they want to play or not by now.

At this rate, you are going to have guys get off to a great start to the season, kick *** for 6 or 7 games, then decide they have proven enough for scouts and decide to opt out. And after that, they’ll still be using school facilities and resources from the schools (meal plan, housing, nutritionists, weight room, etc.) to do nothing but get ready for the draft. The whole thing is ripe for exploitation on the players side.

I agree it would be nice to have had a deadline. But not sure how you'd enforce it in college football. What are you going to do if a player opts out after the deadline? About all you could do would be cut his scholarship, but that would be a terrible PR move.

It's possible a lot of this stuff will slow down when the players start to make money off images and advertisement.

Pretty simple....opting out after the deadline is equal to quitting. Player keeps scholarship through the end of the current semester, so they still have food, housing, and classes paid for in the short term, just like any player who quit the team would have. But they aren’t able to use athletic department perks for their own personal benefit. And after the current semester, they are on their own. It’s only terrible PR if the deadline was set unreasonably early, and we are well past that point now. Everyone knows the risks at this point and has known them for quite awhile.

Maybe nothing would change, but at least players would have to think twice about the optics of it. Players who opt out this late aren’t opting out, they are straight up quitting. None are coming back to their current team.

The schools and conferences themselves have been so non-committal on what they are doing. Even the state governments are involved. It's put players in a tough position when everyone above them has been debating for months about what to do, and there's still a lot of uncertainty. Hell - we're 1 month from the first game in Starkville and ticket holders who have paid thousands $$ on tickets have no clue if we'll actually get any tickets or not. There's so much garbage information being throw around out there from the very top down - it's an absolute mess if you're a college player with a legit chance at an NFL future. I don't blame these guys at all for telling CFB to 17 off.

Just like we've said coaches probably can't be judged on this season - what if NFL scouts are judging you? You miss practices because you're quarantined, the depth chart changes every week from players getting sick so there's less consistency - you've got 3 different QBs throwing to you, or your WR corp changes from week to week. Maybe you get sick and can't work out for 2-3 weeks, you're out of shape for most of the season and look like ***. Suddenly you drop from a 1st round pick to 3rd round, or go from a borderline guy to no chance of being drafted.
