Gonna be in the market for a new refrigerator, looks like Home Depot has a bunch of LG & Samsung ones on special for Labor Day. For those of you who have fooled with them, what are pluses or minuses? I know they both make a perfectly ok tv but that's all I know about em.

We have an lg and hate it. It came w the house and we are waiting for it to die. Ice maker is flaky, couple of shelves have cracked and were $80 to replace. Maybe they have gotten better in the past 10 years. House also came w lg washer, dryer that we hated and finally replaced. So that added to our overall lg hatred.

A client of mine, appliance repair company, told me Samsung and LG keep him in business. He said they make great electronics but horrible appliances. Go whirlpool or Bosch.

We've had a Samsung for about 7 years now and the only complaint we have is with the ice makers. We go through a lot of ice, so we bought the one with 2 ice makers. The upper one in the door leaks. The repair folks told us it happens to all of them and can't be fixed so we finaly just turned it off. The bottom ice maker in the drawer, makes plenty of ice when it's working. The heater that keeps the trays moving so it dumps ice keeps going out. We've had to replace it at least once a year for the last 5 years.

I have samsung. The ice maker went out after about 7 months. Other than that it has been ok. I would buy the extended warranty. Since there is so few Techs that can work on them in Mississippi if it goes out they will usually just give you a new unit.

We have an LG that we got half price at Sears Outlet....

So far, so good about 8 months in. And LG warranties the heck out of the linear inverter... 10 years, I think.

But the prior one we had was made of LG components and went out.... so, there’s that.

All in all, unless you get a great deal on one like we did you’re probably better off with some of the more tried and true appliance brands.

I replaced all of my kitchen appliances a couple of months ago and before replacing them researched LG and Samsung. These two from appearances (on display at the local stores) were the best looking and seem to be well built. After speaking with a bunch of knowledgeable people I ruled out Samsung as it seem to have numerous problems that Samsung refused to correct. We choose LG but it is not without issues as the refrigerator's split drawer freezer section does not have a interior light and also the ice maker has a very small capacity even though we bought a 26 cu ft frig.

I have owned Whirlpool and GE and they were both excellent but they seemed to have gone downhill over the years. Of course, they are all probably made in the same factory in China or Korea anyway.

LG and Samsung are crap appliances....get a printed quote from HD on a Whirlpool/GE and take it Lowe’s and if you talk to the right person they will best quote by 10-20%

The only Samsung appliance we had was a dishwasher. Got it half price clearance, and it sucked. Mother board went out after 4 years so we replaced w kitchen aid and it's been fine. I know the thread is about fridge, but would only get a samsung tv phone.

Bought a LG fridge about 6 years ago. Been through 4 compressors. First 2 I paid for the labor only - roughly $350 each time. 3rd time I didn’t pay a dime for either. 4th didn’t pay a dime and they finally put in a “universal” compressor to replace the Linear Compressor. Next time it goes out I will be buying a Whirlpool, Bosch or Kenmoor.

I always check Wirecutter reviews before making a big purchase, and I’ve been happy with what I’ve gotten so far. For fridges, their top picks are Whirlpool, Maytag, and GE.

https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/the-best-refrigerator/

They said the same thing about LG that others have mentioned here. “We considered a number of popular LG models... But reviews from owners (and comments from our readers on an older version of this guide) revealed a concerning pattern of compressor failure for every model on our short list (and more). Although we understand that people with complaints tend to be overrepresented in reviews, seeing so many reports of the same catastrophic problem is a major red flag.”

Just ditched a Samsung fridge. Had 4 years issue free, then 2 years of ice issues and frost getting behind the back wall.

We didn’t rebuy one.

If you live on the coast, do not go Bosch. It is impossible to find a repair man. When we moved into our condo there was a Bosch dishwasher that worked fine for about a year. But then the control panel started screwing up and finally just quit. Called a bunch of people and all but two said they would not work on a Bosch. One place listed a bunch of name brands they work on, including Bosch. Left word on their voicemail, said Bosch, and never heard back. Called the second guy and he said he would be out in two weeks. Never showed up. Bought a Whirlpool and it does very good work.

I'm not so sure about Samsung's ability to make a good television. I had one that failed after just over a year of ownership, from a known problem, yet Samsung woudln't stand behind it. I won't buy another. I have an LG now and it's fine.

Regarding refrigerators - my sister-in-law had a Samsung, and it had an issue during the warranty period. There was nobody local, and a fairly populous area, that could work on them. So that's one thing to consider.

We bought a GE Prestige about 8 or 9 years ago and have had no problems with it.

I have an LG....so far no major functional issues over 4 years or so, but the handles scratch easily and the stainless finish smudges very quickly as well. Those would be my two biggest complaints.

I'm never buying Samsung refrigerator again. Have had problems on my French door with evaporator icing over and blocking the recirculation fan, so a warm refrigerator meaning spoiled food, mold, and a probable bacteria smorgasbord.

From a design standpoint, the defrost system was criminally negligent, and that is a separate issue from the class action lawsuits on the ice maker on the same model.

Bought a Bosch dishwasher 5 or 6 years ago. I won’t buy another. It does an ok job cleaning but it doesn’t dry for ****.

Do your research on LG. I was leary of LG because of all the problems. There are substantial quality differences in the models. I've had a french-door style with ice in the door LG around 4 years now, but I bought a model with the least amount of issues at the time, per the interwebs. I haven't had any problems yet. The only complaint I have is that the water line inside is very short, so you don't get much cold water.

Is that an intentional energy saving feature? Maybe the heated dry is a user changeable option, but defaults to "off"?

GE appliances exist in name only now, as they sold their entire appliance division to Haier (Chinese company). The nameplate is the same but everything else is from the parent company, including the manufacturing. I’m not sure about Whirlpool, but I know they shuttered many of their US plants after they bought out Maytag (including the plant they had in Oxford), and likely shipped a lot of their production abroad.

I have a Samsung we’ve had our ice makers replaced twice. Once for the top and once for the bottom. Otherwise it’s a nice fridge.

I'm hoping this holds true. We just moved into our new house and had to fill it mostly with GE appliances because that was all that was readily available from Cowboy Maloney. A word of advice for all of you shopping for appliances out there during the COVID: Just because they (Lowes and HD especially) have it on the showroom floor, it doesn't mean they will sell it to you. In other words, depending on the brand you buy, you might be standing by it on the floor, but they still will have to order it and take 4 weeks or more in some cases.

Same here. Inherited one with the house and except for a problem with the drain hole freezing up in the freezer (easy DIY fix) it's been fine. It has an "Ice Plus" button that really pumps out the ice when you need it.

Whirlpool

Bought a Whirlpool July 19, 2019. Had both ice makers replaced in first yr. Then 370 days after the purchase, the top ice maker went out. Thankfully I bought an extended warranty. When they come out , there are 2 visits per "fix" One to determine the part, then a week later with the part. Fix one: Replaced the blower for top ice maker. Unit quit cooling(refrigerator part not freezer). A week later ice showed up in the upper ice maker. 2nd set of visits, replaced the mainboard and the control panel. No cooling still. 3rd set of visits, replaced the fan. After this was done, the lights do not work and the door alarm show up at all times. But fridge cools now, but also no ice upper or lower(but water works). Warranty company sent me a check for the full purchase price. Now this becomes the garage fridge. Whirlpool IMHO sucks.

I'd stay away unless it's a great deal. and get the extended warranty if you get Ice and water in the door.

I had a Samsung French door with ice and water in the door. Developed a water leak in Year 2. We couldn't find where the leak was. Called support. The leak was found in an unaccessable location ( in the insulation in the top of the fridge, between the inner liner and the metal shell) It was out of warranty. Samsung's "solution" was to get a new one or cut off the water.

Put LG and Samsung on your TV stand.

NEVER put them in your kitchen or Laundry room. EVER.
