This is an impossible conspiracy theory, right?

People would take you more seriously if you even halfway considered the idea that this isn't 100% sinister, if EVERYTHING you post wasn't negative. The universities exist for a reason - to educate people. You can debate the merits all day long, but education isn't a complete money grab all the time. There's a reason for it, they provide something.

There are a lot of people who don't fear the virus as you do.

Further, your posting history also includes a bunch of negative news about the stock market. Your agenda is very clear. I notice you don't comment on other conspiracies unless they support that agenda.

This is dumb for a lot of reasons, least of all because it's not just freshmen who are congregating irresponsibly.

But on a more serious note... As someone who works on campus, I can assure you that everyone who works here, even the upper-level administrators that I've talked with, would love nothing more than to keep campus open all semester without any issues. If for no other reason than campus being open means we get to keep our jobs. Campus going to online learning means some people's jobs might be at risk. No one wants that.

But I also don't know anyone that isn't also concerned about either their own health or the health of a friend or loved one. There are no easy answers to any aspect of this virus. And I don't think asking college students to act responsibly (maintain social distancing, wear a mask when around others) is too much to ask as a prerequisite for trying to keep campus open.

If they can't follow a few simple requests, then yes, it will mostly be their fault if campus has to shut down/go virtual at any point. But again, no one wants that to be the case. It's not some vast conspiracy.

The way MSU treated me when I got pulled back into active duty for Desert Storm I have serious doubt they would even think about trying that. I have more faith in my University.

They exist to turn a profit, or they would not exist at all. There's a reason tuition has disproportionately skyrocketed. They are a business and the bottom line is either black or red.

Don't be an idiot. Every business (or non-profit in this case) provides a service/value. Tuition has gone up because there is a demand for education, with loans a plenty.

I can't believe I have to explain this. Do you think Walmart prints money? Or do they actually provide you with something when you check out at the register?

The OP only get merit because a lot of schools have rules that after something like 2 weeks that room and board is not refundable.

So while not necessarily a conspiracy theory, schools were somewhat motivated to at least try to open and then stay open for a few weeks even if they didn’t think there was a huge chance they could maintain it for the full semester

I got room and board money back from state because of last year's shut down.

You know what? I bought a big package of money in the party section at Walmart just last week. It was strange though. The guy at the liquor store wanted to call the cops when I tried to use it to buy a fifth of Jack Daniels.

Tuition has gone up bc student loans are ultimately backed by the Fed which greatly reduces risk to the lender.
