We call that stealing in the south! I used to see that years ago, folks would grab fresh produce and eat it and spit seeds and cores out on the tables. No intention of buying it.

When I was a child, yes.

It's not hard to look at a bunch of grapes and tell if they are solid or not. Must be a Yankee or old lady thing...

When I worked at the Sunflower in Charleston in high school, grapes, apples, oranges, jungle juice, etc would all fall prey... all the employees had to take a yearly polygraph... which was stressful for a 15 year old.

There is an “Everybody Loves Raymond” episode about this where Frank and the other old people steal the produce. It’s pretty funny

Nope but I know some do. Brought home some pimento cheese dip not long ago and a big hole was in it when I opened the lid. My dog enjoyed it tho.

I've seen stressed out young moms peel a banana to shut up a screaming kid. I was in total agreeance.

My first thought seeing this is the opening scene of C.C. and Company where Joe Namath walks through a supermarket making a sandwich.

must be a thing up here in western New York:View attachment 17424

Do people not feel the need to wash grapes before eating them? I just assume they are nasty from pesticide residue and being handled and shipped. Not that running cold water over it for a few seconds is really going to make a huge difference, but I feel a lot better and couldn't just go through the grocery store eating unwashed produce unless it was something like a banana that you peel.

My wife washes produce, but if I’m making the kids’ lunches I don’t have time for that. They lick the slide on the playground anyway, what are a few grapes gonna hurt.

I bought grapes yesterday & wondered why the bags are always open. So why are they? Does it keep them from going bad? These are the hard-hitting questions I have.

The mild OCD in me zipped the ziploc.

I can’t imagine what went on for a grocery store to put up that sign but I have heard horror stories.

Heard a story about a dude that was so cheap that he would stop off at the grocery store and put on deodorant and put it back on the shelf. Think about that next time you pick up your old spice.

I used to give my daughters a banana in the grocery store when they were younger. I would weigh another banana twice to pay for it. Not really practical to do with grapes.

I have trouble finding Clorox or Lysol wipes when I go to Kroger or Walmart. I went to Kroger Saturday night around 10:30 P.M and they were putting some Clorox wipes out and I asked could I get one and the guy stocking the shelves said I better because the employees will take them all before morning. This was 30 minutes before closing.

If they didn’t want me to eat the grapes they should have fermented them and put them in a bottle.

In the late '50s my dad owned a small grocery....mom and pop type of thing....everybody knew everybody. There was one lady who would get a cart...go by and pick up a cluster of grapes (sold by the pound) and eat as she walked and shopped. By the time she was 'checked out' the cluster was greatly reduced in size. I never saw him do it, but pretty sure my dad may have laid a heavy thumb on the scales when he weighed the cluster....LOL

I have did it but not in the last 30 years. But I remember doing it when I was 7-8. I guess my mom figured if I was hanging out near the grapes then I wasn’t hanging out near the baseball cards.

Ironically enough, we eat a lot of grapes in my house, and I legit had no concept of people doing this until about 3 mos. ago - was at Kroger in Oxford, and as I was walking up to the grapes I saw a super old guy reach in a bag, take one out and eat it. At first I thought WT17 is he doing, and then I thought ahhhhhh ... as someone who's been the victim of a bag full of not-so-good grapes, it felt like it was a genius, baller move. But I can't bring myself to do it ... and I always wash all of them off and stick them in a bowl in the fridge when we get home.
