So... we’ve now lost 4 starters and another 4-5 transfers from last year’s team that was on the outside looking in in terms of the NCAA bubble. I’m looking for any positive takes as to why we won’t be in for a rough season. Anybody?

If it happens at all, it won't be anything like a normal season, so it won't seem as rough?

When Howland's tenure as our coach is done, I fear that the biggest takeaway will be that he had all of these blue chip prospects at the same time, many of whom were MSU legacies, and didn't do anything with them.

Losing the starters is a killer, but if we added back ALL the guys who transferred out (assuming you could have a 17-18 man roster), I doubt we would be a bit better in 2020.

I guess some team gave him a guarantee - guess we'll see soon. Teams lie a lot to these kids. I was talking to a friend who is a really good friend of a baseball prospect that was expected to go in rounds 2-4 of the MLB draft. Several teams called early to see if he'd sign below slot value - but still in the $1M range and they said yes. Both teams said they were taking him and then didn't. The offers eventually got low enough that he decided he's going to college (not at MSU)

Other explanation would be he thinks there won't be a NCAA season - I'm not sure if that would have helped him or hurt him for the next draft.

Yeah, I don’t disagree, and that unfortunately brings Howland’s recruiting from the last couple years into question. I get losing some guys that just weren’t going to crack a 7-8 man rotation, but whiffing on guys like King and Butts so early in their careers is not a good look

I appreciate Howland for pulling the program out of the gutter, but if you had told me 5 years ago that we’d sign Newman, both Weatherspoons, Perry, Carter, Woodard and a handful of other 4 stars, I’d have easily assumed that we’d accomplished more than a lone one and done appearance in the NCAA tournament. There’s really no way to spin it as anything but disappointment

From what I understand as long as Robert doesn't get drafted and doesn't sign with an agent he can still return after the draft. So if it's me and I have talked to Howland to assure my spot after the draft then I keep my name in and go to the draft and gain as much knowledge about the process as possible. Then after I go undrafted I return. There's no benefit to Robert to pull his name out now as long as he's already got an understanding with Howland to keep his spot on ice for him.

We never know what would have been in 2020. We could have gotten hot and made arun.

I’m pretty sure he can’t come back - as I recall the draft delay caused a change this year in students ability to come back
