How effective would a hard core lockdown be against Covid?

The problem is that wearing these non medical masks don’t work. It’s a way for people to virtue signal and do what they want without feeling guilt for spreading covid, which they are in fact doing anyway because putting the equivalent of your shirt over your mouth doesn’t help.
This is ridiculous.
Ive used this analogy many times, guess I’ll try it again...

Lets say I have a confirmed case of Covid. You are standing 8 ft from me, we are facing each other. I’m going to cough/sneeze in your direction. Would you feel better if I was wearing a mask or not? Even if you happen to catch it from me, maybe you got a smaller viral load than if I didn’t have a mask. Viral load seems to be important in regards to severity.

No, masks aren’t going to stop the virus in its tracks, but I’m pretty confident it can slow the spread.

Im sure as hell not virtue signaling.

Do me a favor. Look at the covid # before everyone started getting mandated to wear masks everywhere they went and look at them now. The **** does not work. You can’t go to a place of business without one and the spread is not stopping at all and we aren’t all spreading it at grandma’s Sunday lunch. Use some 17’ing common sense. The virus isn’t being stopped by a cloth mask. It just isn’t. People aren’t going around spitting on people. It’s way more easily transferred than that. Go put on your goggles while you’re at it.

You can wear a mask or don’t wear a mask, I don’t care. But don’t be an idiot and act like there is no usefulness from a mask.

Or its not being spread by those with masks on. Its likely private parties

If it were being just spread by private parties then the numbers would have been this high during our lockdown because that is when private parties were really happening the most. It is spreading so fast right now because people believe that the mask is an end all be all of protection when it’s really not doing ****.

People were far, far more cautious during lockdown. At least from my world. We sat in front yards distanced. Didnt go in each others house for a period of weeks. Didnt let our kids play together. And we were not alone.

we know of someone who got it having lunch with their boss. During lockdown you couldnt even go to a restaurant.

Most everyone I know that was essential (including ourselves) had forms printed out stating we were essential because we thought that it would be that way. And it was not

Yep. Not truly a lockdown when 95% of people were able to claim being essential. I basically couldn't get a haircut or go to the movie.

People were not allowed to go to restaurants, bars, shopping malls, the beach, etc during lockdown. You are not a representation of nearly anyone because the CDC guidance during our lockdown was to not even wear a mask. People are spreading covid because they think they can slap on a bandana over their face and have a magic covid shield. The numbers right now are proving they don’t work and we have people saying that the cloth masks actually do work but now when we are at home parties without masks on (like we were the entire time during lockdown) the covid just spreads way much more. You can’t actually believe what you are saying.

Serious question. Do you wear goggles now when you are around other people? If not, why?

And all that changed about the time some opened up for Memorial Day. I feel our initial lockdown slowed the rate at which the virus spread beyond New York. What we are seeing now is the result of society letting down their guard.

I'm still not sure what our federal strategy is. We have a nationwide pandemic and the mixed messaging is all over the place at a federal level. Our federal strategy was to leave it to the states. And when you place that order on 50 states, you're going to have 50 different attacks on it. Some may work. Some may not. In the era of community spread, if half fail then we all do.

We have 150,000 people dead and 50 million out of work. Instead of a political rally about "ME", let's professionally address the nation about US.
How about instead of Democrats politicizing this as they do EVERYTHING connected to the Trump administration, let's professionally address the nation about US? How about instead of constantly taking dishonest shots at Trump, claiming he is responsible for not doing more in the beginning, resulting in "100's of thousands more deaths", the Democrats cut the crap and just work with the administration for the best interest of all citizens? How about this in particular for those jackasses who, like Pelosi, Biden, etc., went out after Trump quickly stopped incoming flights from China, called him a Xenophobe, and, in Pelosi's case, went straight to Chinatown in SF to glad-hand, hug, etc., anyone and everyone there, suggesting everyone should come out to Chinatown, enjoy the weather, support Chinatown businesses, etc., to "prove" Trump was overreacting when he did that?

How about Joe Biden stop making these outrageous claims that he advised Trump to stop incoming from China well before Trump did so, thus claiming he himself would have done it sooner, saving untold lives, when in fact, Biden was very much against Trump stopping the China flights, calling Trump a xenophobic racist up until it became more obvious shutting down the flights from China was essential?

And how about the MSM stop ignoring these blatant lies and call these jackasses on this stuff? They won't because they, too are "Pelosi's, Schumer's, etc.", only in a different job, and they know doing so will make it very difficult for Biden to get elected and for other of their politicians to win elections.

It's all the get togethers and extended family gatherings. People love to say they're being careful at family gatherings, but they show the photo with everyone smack together without masks.

I know people who caught COVID-19 and claimed they were taking lots of precautions, but when they list where they went the week before it's more social than what I was doing before COVID-19.

You’re confusing 2 issues because you don’t understand, which is probably why you’re defensive. The goggles can only protect you. You are not going to spread Covid through your eye ball, but droplets can get in your eye. The mask is to stop any droplets in your mouth from getting as far as they would without a mask. Wearing a mask is not going to prevent you from getting the virus but it greatly reduces the chances.

If you don’t believe me, use the example I gave you earlier. You can test this at your house. Old a piece of paper up in front of your mouth and spit or sneeze on that paper. Then do the same thing with a mask on, you’re going to notice a dramatic difference. That difference is all people are trying to do. A condom might not prevent you from getting someone pregnant but it’s a lot better than no condom.

There is not one reputable doctor that is now saying it’s not helpful to wear a mask. Quit trusting billy bob on Facebook and trust the freaking doctors. If it was not helpful, they wouldn’t wear for up to 12 hours a day in the hospital.

Im not real sure what you just argued but I'll summarize and we can agree to disagree:
I don't wear goggles b/c its not universally recommended per Fauci, I don't hear a chorus of experts calling for it, its not the law, and if everyone will wear a mask, then I shouldn't have to worry about my eyes very much.

You are saying that an increase in numbers equals the ineffectiveness of masks. You have no baseline for that. Maybe they don't work. But I feel strongly the spread is not from mask wearers. I have no evidence for that other than my own common sense. In my world, teenagers are spiking this thing significantly.

At one point, you said that it can't be just from private gathering of those who won't wear masks or otherwise it would have spread during lockdown. And my argument is there is absolutely no comparison of lockdown to now as far as private gatherings are concerned. I cannot imagine anyone can disagree with that.

Again, we don't know one way or the other, but increasing numbers do not mean mask wearing is ineffective.

Goodness people! COVID19 is ubiquitous!

The only way to the other side of tbis is through it. No matter how long lockdowns are or could be, COVID19 will be waiting! The only way for this virus to burnout is to run it's course.

It is waiting for New Zealand....this year or next. The virus doesn't care. Just when they think it has been beaten, they will find out how patient the virus is.

So, let's be done with it now! Let COVID19 run it's course now...not later. Do what you think you have to do to protect yourself and those you love, but there is no stalling this thing out of existence.

Everyone is being made to wear a mask at basically every business in the country and the numbers are not going down. It’s pretty clear mask wearing is not working. It would at least cut back the spread a little bit if they were any help at all because common sense says that a lot of covid was being spread pre mask wearing in large gathering spots that now require masks but did not a few months ago. To say that we are no longer spreading it when we wear cloth non medical masks and it’s all at our private parties we are going to is Silly to put it nicely. The fact that you aren’t wearing goggles because you think you can’t catch it if everyone wears a mask proves the point even further.

Isn't Japan the most vigilant mask wearers in the world? They're looking like they're on the verge of an outbreak there.

Doctors wear medical masks. They Don’t order one off of Etsy and call it appropriate, because those type of “masks” are useless. I’m not confusing anything bud. I’m telling you to look at the data and the data says we are all wearing masks and infections aren’t going down at all. It takes a real idiot to not see that it’s not working. To try to just explain it away as people throwing house parties and that equating to the same amount of covid cases as would happen if no one were wearing masks at the grocery store is mind numbingly stupid. Your analogy of spitting through a mask is also completely ignorant. We aren’t spreading covid through spitting on people. We’re you raised in a barn? Who the hell goes around spitting?. The **** that gets through that mask when you spit through it but don’t actually see (I know that it’s hard for you to comprehend that microorganisms can get through a cloth mask but people with any common sense at all know this) is what is getting people the virus.

Because you have to wear a mask to go anywhere in this country that isn’t private property right now and the numbers aren’t going down, genius. Have you not been out of your cellar for the last month? You can’t go anywhere that doesn’t require one. Use some damn common sense.

No one said people were spitting on each other. It’s just a way to prove to someone like you how a mask works.

Forget the spit, hold a mirror up in front of your face and breath air on it, it’ll fog up. Then do it with a mask on, it fogs up way less.

And again, never once did I say a mask would stop absolutely everything. Never even suggested that. I said a mask would allow way less to get through. That’s a fact. I’m sorry you don’t understand that or at this point are just to stubborn to admit it.

Go back to life like before. Wear a mask in public. Dont go around people if your sick. Stop reporting the numbers.

I finally just watched United 93 about that last hijacked plan that crashed in Pennsylvania. As you watch it and now have 20/20 vision you are just flabbergasted at the total cluster <17> it was. The military was unable to get an armed aircraft anywhere near any of the hijacked planes. But if you stop and listen to the story, there had not been a hijacking in 20 something years. It just wasn't in the main thought process at that time. That's why it worked.

When the Yellowstone caldera explodes millions of people might die. We can't control nature and you never fully prepare for something that is out of the normal.

Its 3 things to keep the numbers from rising even faster.

You can't show it doesn't work and it can't be shown it does work.

Well, you're wrong about everyone wearing masks and the mandate. There's no mandate in most of this state. And I see more people without a mask than with. Those people are spreading it and catching it.
Granted, nothing is 100% protective. But your mask argument is inaccurate.

YOU CAN'T CONTROL IT. There is absolutely no way for every human being on the planet to isolate for 14 to 21 days without killing all those people who actually need help from another human being. How many people die from some sort of disease everyday? We haven't cured many pathogens and they have been spending money on those for years.

Why is this so hard to comprehend?

The steps we have already taken has increased deaths in some catagories like suicides and the inability to diagnose people with the decrease of in-office visits according to some stories out there. We have definitely hurt a booming economy. We have probably done about as good a job as possible.

This bold paragraph- do you have stats?
What is the confirmed increased number if suicides due to the fallout of how covid has been handled? How does one even obtain such a confirmed statistic?
And how many have been misdiagnosed or undiagnosed due to a lack of in person access to Healthcare? Again, how does one even obtain such a confirmed statistic?

As for the booming economy, it was a house of cards before this and even if we had done nothing, the economy would have been crushed due to its ties to other countries that did shut down.

Also, do you honestly still not understand the concept of flattening the curve? Had nothing been done, we would have overwhelmed the emergency Healthcare system back in March and April. Really, why is this still being discussed in August?

Possibly one of the libs who insisted or agreed with the moronic "experts" who claimed the stock market would crash within days of Trump's election...and then when it didn't happen, say it would when he took office...and then when it didn't happen claimed that Obama was so freaking brilliant that his policies were the ones that really got our economy booming, and were in fact so very good that the economy was able to survive a Trump presidency for years.

You mad brah?

The mask prevents water droplets from you talking, yelling, coughing, and sneezing from going all over the place when you’re in a public place. The virus has to have a carrier to get around and 90 percent of the time it’s water droplets from your mouth. Masks significantly drop that.

BS. How can anyone objectively look at what the Dems are doing every damn day and not realize it is political for all of us. It's so obvious that many of them consider this tragedy an elixir..a gift from their gods to aid them in going after Trump. So some people have to sacrifice their businesses, livelihoods, homes, retirements, and even lives. That's just the price "we" (excluding them) have to pay to get them more power so they can create their socialist nirvana.

If we put basically everyone on house arrest for 2 weeks except for essential health care and law enforcement what would be the expected outcome on virus numbers afterwards?

I’ve gotten the point where I would gladly hole up for 2-3 weeks if it meant reasonable normality when coming out of it. And by that I means schools and extracurricular activities are fully back to normal with reasonable guidelines and safety measures.

I just don’t know how effective that would really be long term?

In my opinion, locking down for 2 weeks wouldn't work . . . mainly because there's no way to guarantee that every single person would remain isolated for 2 weeks. That's just not the way society works. People are going to interact regardless of any required lockdown.

This virus is going to run its course, and there is nothing (that is practical, reasonable and effective) we can do to prevent people from catching it . . . until a vaccine is ready.

It looks like Sweden made it to the other side as their numbers are plummeting while rest of Europe is starting to spike... Sweden should have done a better job on the front end protecting the vulnerable, but it looks like the virus has burnt through there.

You're the only poster mentioning "flattening the curve" and "overwhelmed the emergency Healthcare system back in March and April."

Thus, you should ask your question to yourself.

Nothing. If 100 people were going to get infected, a lockdown wouldn't take that to 80 or 90 total infected. All it will do is take the 100 from getting infected in 2 weeks to 100 people getting infected over 5-6 weeks. Remember, flattening the curve had nothing to do with avoiding infections, it was to give hospitals breathing room to treat the infected.

Let's assume that what you're alleging is true . . . that masks significantly prevent droplets from talking, yelling, coughing and sneezing.

Question: if I don't talk, yell, cough or sneeze when I'm in public . . . and, if I don't get with 6 feet of another person when I'm in public . . . then how has me wearing a mask in public helped to prevent the spread of the virus?

Because you breathe and could be a COVID19 Typhoid Mary. The viral load a person respires can vary person to person depending on the stage of infection. If you respire a heavy viral load, move, someone quickly moves into that area & comes into contact with virus before it dessicates, then there is still a higher chance of transmission that would be lower if you have a mask on. To be fair, there are many variables that go into transmission. The situation you describe for most people probably results in extremely low risk of spread.

There are so many variables- The type of mask, how it’s worn, the viral load the person is shedding at the time, what the person is doing, the distance b/t people, are you stationary in your social distancing or trailing like through a store, inside/outside, temperature and humidity and probably several others that go into the equation.

Masks don’t stop the spread, but they help lower the risk of spread.

I may have misunderstood your post.

If you’re saying the dems are using covid to their advantage, absolutely I agree they are.

If you’re saying the dems are hyping up numbers and the severity of covid, then I disagree with that.
