Funny how when the Cowboys leak these things, the never ever ever mention the length of the contract offer. I hope Dak takes the Franchise tag & forces them to franchise him again next year.

Does league uncertainty factor in now?

NFL is far more insulated than college, so I doubt the boat gets rocked as much. But say things get really bad this winter and the season is canceled or there is a huge ticket revenue hit. I'd rather have that $100M guarantee than have ownership come back in the future and say the economics are different and start to try to pinch pennies. Devil is in the details but that's probably a Top 5 contact / 4 yr deal at those numbers.

He's basically guaranteed $70M over two years by taking the tag. Dallas will get hammered by the cap if Covid hits the NFL hard. They need that deal worse than Dak.

‘Rona finally doing work. Short season (less game footage for draftable qbs) + general uncertainty = dak payday.

League uncertainty is a factor no matter what he does. This year, he'll make about the same no matter what he does. That $100M guarantee is pretty small guarantee if it's for an 8-year contract. He'll make that much or more in 3 years just by being franchised.

Again, Jerry keeps letting these other QB’s cost him money. He could’ve signed Dak to 4 years @30-32 million if he’d have acted before Wentz and Goff signed.

It’s getting to the point where I’m honestly not sure what either side is fighting for. We all know that Jerry wants a longer term deal while Dak wants a shorter one, but all this bickering over one year that’d reportedly be worth about $35M just seems asinine. It’s starting to remind me of a couple that’d rather watch their household implode rather than share responsibility over who does the dishes

And yes... I get that we’re talking about millions here, not chores. That said, if you’re Jerry, you just overpaid out the *** for Lawrence, Zeke, and possibly Cooper. Not to mention a couple O linemen from prior years. Is the 5th year on Dak’s deal really that big of a deal to you? So big that you’re undoubtedly either going to cost yourself more by dragging your feet or else lose him altogether. Likewise for Dak, is a 5th year at $35M while raking in endorsements as face of the Cowboys really that bitter of a pill to swallow? This is really starting to get stupid

I’m guessing a lot of it is about respect. Jerry has shown he is willing to reward other players on the team with the contracts they want. Dak probably feels disrespected. At this point he may have decided he’s moving on when they are done tagging him. He may not be interested in a long term deal.

I'm trying to imagine what it must be like to operate in a reality where it's a good decision to turn down a job offer of $35M/year for 5 years and they're also telling me no matter what happens I'm guaranteed at least $100 MILLION DOLLARS.

....cannot fathom...

It's pretty simple. Jerry wants to lock Dak up long-term at today's market value, which would be a big discount for him in 4 years. Dak wants to get market value today, and be able to get market value 4 years from now.

Dak will get his 4 year deal...after next season. He will be playing on the tag this season.

$100M guaranteed over a long contract term is nothing. Dak will virtually certainly make that in 3 years by going the franchise tag route. But if what you say about a 5-year offer is true, the Cowboys are at least moving in the right direction on that part.

Dak's too savvy to let that happen.

He knows his status as the Cowboys QB is a big part of a lot of his endorsements.

I have no idea if the 5 year thing is accurate. I was just making the idle observation that I can't imagine what it must be like to make a business decision to turn down that kind of money.

I bet if you told Dak 10 years ago... Look.. a football team is going to offer you over well over $100M to play for a few years but it's going to be smart to turn them down.. he wouldn't have believed it.

The only real risk I see for Dak is some type of significant injury. If he doesn't lock in a deal now with a pretty decent amount of guaranteed money that might be an issue if his value declines due to injury. Will also be interesting to see what happens with the NFL revenue dollars. COVID is going to hit attendance pretty hard at least this year and all of this protesting during the National Anthem plus now adding in some sort of Black National Anthem for Week 1 has got some folks ready to just stop watching the NFL altogether. There is certainly potential to the downside for Dak.

By “long term”, are we talking about one extra year? As the alleged $100M guaranteed is less than Goff, Wentz, or Wilson got on 4 year deals, Jerry couldn’t possibly by asking for more than a 5th year, could he?

I guess at the end of the day, I’m just wondering how Dak and his agent are thinking this going to play out. He signed the tag for this year, and when Jerry continues to drag his feet after this year, I guess he’ll tag him again for around $38M next year, but then what? Free agency? If Jerry’s refusing to pay him like top 10 QB now, it’s hard for me to see him suddenly caving unless Dak has a super bowl winning Mahomes-like season.

I don’t know... I just don’t see this ending well for anyone right now. Dak may get his payday, but I don’t think it’s gonna happen in Dallas

Who knows how long? The Cowboys never leak that. It'll end well for Dak. He's holding all the cards. Sign a deal on his terms, or he'll sign a franchise contract this year, again next year, and then test the open market.

As far as Dak and his agent, they know exactly how it will play out. They have all the leverage, which means all of their moves are predetermined on the chess board. Dak will get 2 franchise tags in a worst case, followed by the Cowboys actually having to put their best offer on the table after paying out the *** for 2 years already, because the rest of the league will be bidding against them. Or, Dallas will actually meet their demands, which at this point is a 3-4 year deal next year valued at ~$37 or $38 million per year or more, with $100 ~ $120 million guaranteed (depending on if its 3 years or 4 years).

Just imagine the worst case scenario out there for Dak himself. Let’s say he goes out and gets a Teddy Bridgewater injury in the middle of next season. Is Dallas just gonna let a Top 10 QB walk? Hell no they aren’t. They’ll probably tag him again just to see how the recovery goes (while simultaneously putting pressure on him to sign an even worse long term deal than they offered in 2019-20, to take advantage of the injury situation). They would still have to pay him $37 million next year. It would then be Dak’s choice to sign for something like 5 years / $150 million for 2021 - 2025 in Dallas, or play on the tag again and try to get his full value in 2022 and beyond from whoever would pay it. That’s his floor at this point...5 years / $150 million AFTER pocketing $31.4 million this season...with some injury contingencies and lower guarantees, all in the event that he gets a horrific injury that’s only been seen 2 or 3 times in the history of NFL QB’s.

Dak’s pretty much playing it the way he should. As far as Jerry and company are concerned, they seem to think that by the time its **** or get off the pot time for Dak in the 2021-2022 offseason, they’ll eventually have an obvious overpriced asset that they can discharge to make cap room for Dak’s deal (Tyron Smith, Zeke, or Demarcus Lawrence perhaps?). Kick the can down the road. Huge dice roll on their end.

If he knew that, he would have signed the deal.... the few million they are quibbling over can easily be made up in endorsements... and if he had played this right, he would have endeared himself to the Cowboys fan base which would have had a much longer tail and a greater financial impact long after his playing days....Now as it stands, when he is no longer the Cowboys Quarterback, he will be forgotten quickly...

Dallas went almost a decade without having a franchise QB and when they finally landed on Romo, he was paid at a higher market value than Dak with worse stats. Jerry is trying to make Dak pay for the other bad contracts. Zeke and Cooper aren't worth what they just got. If you look at the offense with and without Zeke, it is not very different yard per play. I am not saying Zeke isn't a really good RB but stats say the overall offense doesn't "run through him" like people want to believe.

I don’t dispute anything you’ve laid out, but you have a lot more confidence than I do that Jerry isn’t going to fold his hand at some point, and that is the risk on Dak’s side. Will he get picked up on a lucrative deal elsewhere? Sure, but will it come with $10M+/yr in endorsements as face of the Cowboys? Nope

Dak and his agent are a lot surer than I am that Jerry’s eventually gonna cave

Dak's not going to have any problems getting endorsements almost no matter where he goes. Some other QBs may need to be with a marque team, but he's got the looks, charisma, and intelligence and is a good enough player to be marketable no matter where he's playing. I know the Cowboys are playing up the angle that he's getting that $50MM because of the team he plays for, but that's way overblown.

I don't think they are overblowing it all that much. That Star is pretty damn pricey. If he ends up with L.V. Raiders it would probably be nice enough initially, but even his national contracts would likely take a hit once he's no longer the Cowboy's QB.

It's all in the branding. That's where Jere wins.

Kinda' what I'm wondering also. COVID and National Anthem protesting and adding a Black National Anthem will certainly turn lots of fans off, thereby creating a significant downside for the NFL. I hope Dak can get a guaranteed deal as soon as possible.

This is what amazes me. Jerry is willing to overpay for the most easily replaceable positions in football but wont pony up what it takes to keep his most important player. It's almost as if he has no idea what makes a championship caliber football team.

I don’t think Dak and his agent know whether or not Jerry will cave, and I don’t think they really care, honestly. He’s going to get paid either way. And, barring an ownership and front office overhaul, he honestly has a much better chance at a SB ring if he gets away from Dallas, even if its at the cost of a few endorsement dollars (which I think are still going to be there regardless).

Agreed. I asked several months ago why Quincy Carter and Jon Kitna weren’t simultaneously repping 3 or 4 Fortune 500 companies when they were ‘Merica’s team QB1, and nobody could give a good answer.

He will absolutely be fine. And hopefully he will be with a team with an owner that appreciates him. Jere obviously does not.

But he won't make as much in endorsements. And that's a fact.

Unless he wins a Super Bowl. Then he can make money and tell Jere where to go.

I think this shows Jerry doesn’t think Dak is a long term solution. I’m not sure why not, but when you have a long term solution at QB, you lock them up. That’s basic NFL front office stuff. Even if you over pay, it’s a lot less than what you lose when you don’t have a QB. It’s not complicated. The cowboys have shown they knew what they were doing when drafting QB’s once during Jone’s reign. Aikman. They lucked into drafting Dak and didn’t draft Romo. Why they think they could easily find another winner is beyond me.

I still believe if you sign a contract for 25 million a year for 5 years, that contract better be worth 125 million guaranteed. This contract terms and different gauranteed money is driving the cost way up.

All I can think is that it's the Donald Sterling approach. Not sure I believe it, but one of the other owners (maybe Mark Cuban?) defended Sterling and said that he wasn't letting all their free agents walk because he was cheap, but because he only cared about winning a championship and didn't want to pay for players that were good but not good enough to win a championship. So Jerry thinks Dak is good, but he wants to win championships, not just be in the playoffs, so he's not going to commit to Dak unless it's in a way that leaves him "extra" money for other positions.

Of course that goes out the window when you look at what he's done for other positions. Really inexplicable. If he doesn't think Dak is the answer, why not lock him down to teh shorter contract that Dak wants?
