Well I give up. People have now completely lost their 17in mind. Just saw an article indicating that USCw has removed a John Wayne exhibit because of some white supremacy B.S. statement from whoever. John Wayne played football for USC in the 1920’s by the way. The whole Country is nuts.

John Wayne, James Arness, Jimmy Stewart, Kevin Costner, Clint Eastwood, Robert Duvall, and his partner Tommy Lee Jones, please call home! We desperately need you and others like you like never before.

Good grief. 😞 My Son swore off from reading SPS about 3 years ago and said that life was better for staying away from it. I’m starting to think that he was on to something there. I used to come here and laugh or learn about our sports. Now days I just find it, and pretty much everything else on the internet, depressing. No good news, ever......

I certainly thought I knew the MSU fan base. These past few months..... I can't say I do know MSU. I just tell myself a very small percentage of State fans post here. I hope that's true.

For reference, here is the Wayne quote in question:

"I believe in white supremacy until the blacks are educated to a point of responsibility."

It’s the reason why political posting was/is so bad. It brings out the worst in people and just fractures everyone even more. I’ll be honest, when football and sports are canceled, I’ll be deleting the bookmark for a while.

I agree, we’ve lost a lot of good posters over the last 5-6 years and I would hate to see it whither away. SPS is where I get 90% of my state news and a lot of entertainment. I don’t have a lot to offer on the state news front other than an opinion but I try to make people laugh as often as I can. But I find myself completely skipping over 75% of the political threads. In them I’ve seen sides of posters that I hate (on both sides) from posters that I have really liked for a decade so I try to avoid most of those topics in hopes of preserving my opinion of said posters.

I think I'm the board's second biggest USC fan. There is a guy here with a USC degree I think. I just like them from the John McKay/ Anthony Davis days. That was cemented when I met my wife's uncle who played for them back in the 50s. My take on memorials and monuments isnt conventional. I'm an avid amateur historian. As such I'm well aware that Monuments and memorials have always existed at the pleasure of the current generation. Historiography is just as interesting as history. If you don't like what's being done, then sell your case.

For the record, John Wayne and Humphry Bogart are my favorite actors.

We’re using up and down votes to pick sides that mirror the culture. Admit this place does a better job at facilitating open discussion on MSU sports than any other and appreciate that. When that’s NOT the subject, we devolve to defending whatever societal norms we identify with and the end result is well, division. I’ve read way more than I post but, like others mention, I find myself clicking SPS from my menu bar less. Got plenty of negative energy otherwise. I vote for mole crickets, Dales, left lane drivers, hair washing in the kitchen sink, flying ants (or termites), and leaks from a cheetah club cabby.

Well the murder hornets are gonna devour the flying ants (termites) for brunch so I guess a double negative does equal a positive. Btw, a very interesting FYI, did you know if you added up the weight of every termite on Earth they would outweigh every human added together. That’s really saying something BC let’s be honest, SPS has more than it fair share of “big uns.”

I’m partial to Jimmy Stewart and Paul Newman. On deck is Robert Duvall, Kevin Costner, and Sam Elliott. Edited to add how could I forget Denzel and Eastwood. Downvote away and my PaDane is rolling over in his grave but I’ve never been a big Marion Morrison, cough, I mean John Wayne fan.

It’s sad that you let someone’s political position impact your view on MSU. I’m glad there are people in the state and fan base that are more liberal than me and more conservative than me. It takes all kinds of people. It does no one any good to only associate with people who think like them.

Reading the whole article from 1971...

Some of his comments were probably considered forward-thinking for the establishment of the time. Also, the quote in question reads in context to me as if he’s referring to political leadership.

SIGH....Here we go again. Why was there an exhibit? Because he was the 17ng Duke, that’s why. I suppose you are all for tearing down the Clinton library in Little Rock too right?

John Wayne's not dead, he's frozen
And as soon as we find a cure for cancer
We're gonna thaw out the Duke and he's gonna be pretty pissed off
You know why
Have you ever taken a cold shower?
Well multiply that by 15 million times
That's how pissed off the Duke's gonna be!
I'm gonna get the Duke, and John Cassavetes
And Lee Marvin, and Sam Peckinpah, and a case of whiskey
And drive down to Texas and

I have to say. Me, Sesh,(who doesn’t post much), and Humps have been here for a while. I have been on this site for 17 years. I didn’t say a ******* word when SPS was completely sports and “banned political talk” and Mutt had his ******** political statements in his signature. Tbay posts with a picture of Adam Schiff as his avatar, which to me, on a MSU message board screams Triggered. The fact is the country is shifting a little left, why? That’s up for debate. Perfect example, horshack. 2 years ago he was 300 miles right of me. Now? We are pretty damn close in the middle. So here’s an idea? Goat, Dorn, Wilco, Nunya. Start political ******** like you did in the camera thread? Bye!

If you look through the threads, you’ll see that the same dozen posters do most of the talking and most of it political from both sides. I’m just over it and will probably joining all the good legit posters who are now silent because it’s just not worth the effort to post during this shitfest.

THis explains John Wayne's reason for never joining the military

https://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/1055/was-john-wayne-a-draft-dodger/

He wasn't a physical coward. But he was very conscious that he would lose his chance at stardom. He overcompensated by becoming a hyper-patriot, and put himself in danger when he visited troops in Vietnam.

Still, he could've at least given the effort to join. Ronald Reagan joined the Army Air Force and made training films. Clark Gable (who was over 40 when the war began), managed to wrangle his way into a bomber squadron and was awarded an air medal. Jimmy Stewart flew over 30 missions as a B-17 pilot, flew a couple in Vietnam in a B-52, and retired as a Brigadier General. Ted Williams was in the Navy during WW II, but flew fighter missions as a Marine fighter pilot during the Korean War. Lee Marvin was a combat Marine who was wounded at Saipan, and is buried at Arlington Cemetery. Mel Brooks was a combat engineer who fought on D-day.

I'm starting to think every liberal too. Some of them unhinged.

For the most part, people are people and have more in common than not. Granted, there's some crazy stuff going on in the world, and it always has. The whole 'us/them/they're crazy' narrative is (mostly) an illusion, a product being sold by market researchers that keeps us divided and gives away one's own power and responsibility.

Add Paint Your Wagon!
I remember The Simpson’s episode where Bart and Homer rented Paint Your Wagon, excited about a Lee Marvin/Clint movie, expecting it to be a badass western. Thank God I saw that episode before I rented that movie. I’d have been pissed.

We divide ourselves. It isn't an illusion it's human nature. We surround ourselves with people who either look, act, or think like we do. It's why this site exists.
