What do we do with Braves? Seminoles? Chiefs? These are pretty iconic brands and getting a makeover is going to be quite the ordeal.

Also, if y’all know of any minority birds out there who are getting the itch to start protesting, let me know. I’ll dust off the 870 and prevent them going after my Cardinals.

Redskins seems a lot more derogatory than any others you mentioned. It does not feel like the redskins are trying to honor native Americans.

I know Florida state has support from the Seminole tribe in Florida.

The Seminole tribe is on record as approving of how FSU does it.

1769: The first unchallenged use of the word “redskin” occurs when a British lieutenant colonel translates a letter from an Indian chief promising safe passage if the officer visited his tribe in the Upper Mississippi Valley.

“I shall be pleased to have you come to speak to me yourself if you pity our women and our children; and, if any redskins do you harm, I shall be able to look out for you even at the peril of my life,” Chief Mosquito said in his letter, according to a 2005 study by Ives Goddard, the Smithsonian Institution’s senior linguist emeritus.

Aug. 22, 1812: At a Washington reception for several Native Americans, President James Madison refers to Indians as “red people” or “my red children,” prompting Little Osage Chief Sans Oreilles (No Ears) to voice his support for the administration: “I know the manners of the whites and the red skins.” Then, Sioux Chief French Crow also pledged loyalty: “I am a red-skin,but what I say is the truth, and notwithstanding I came a long way I am content, but wish to return from here.”

July 20, 1815: After tangling with famed explorer-turned-Missouri Territory Gov. William Clark, Meskwaki Chief Black Thunder gives a speech that was printed in the Western Journal in St. Louis. “I turn to all,” the chief is reported as saying, “red skins and white skins, and challenge an accusation against me.”

Certainly there have been numerous uses of the term in a derogatory fashion, but it seems to me the origin was not considered derogatory by the Native Americans. Do we need to force change every time a group decides to interpret their meaning or intention of a word or term is the meaning?

I have a friend who is part Native American and he's totally fine with all the native team nicknames and such except for Redskins. Its like saying the N-word to a black man.

I think so too, and this isn’t my decision to make. But one would think if the owners could sit down and have an actual conversation with the leaders of the major tribes, particularly those originally in the east coast area they might could find a way to honor them in a way that would help bring reverence to the natives while keeping some form of the mascot in more respectful manner. Maybe even. Give them some percentage of ownership. I’ve never considered the Braves, Seminoles, Chiefs, Indians (it’s a little more iffy) as being derogatory and instead a way of keeping them in our memory.

But again, my 1% on ancestry means it’s not my call to make, just seems like a compromise that elevates those whose land and likeness was taken could be worked out. But the Redskins organization is run about as well as The State of Mississippi so doing what’s best/right is more the exception than the rule.

Thanks for the history lesson. Now do the word "***". Washington **** probably doesn't work either though.

I think the Indians were able to make peace and get support of a tribe when they dropped the old mascot that used to be on their hats.

So it’s like the N word Bc 1 part Native American said it?

I think more than 1 has voiced a problem with it. In my opinion, native Americans have not generally complained about logos and team names. A few years back when Florida state got attacked by social justice warriors, the Seminoles strongly came out in support of Florida state and said they were honored.

If a group of people that don’t make a habit of causing problems tells you something is offensive, you should listen and not immediately start to dismiss them.

Embarrassing is in the eye of the beholder or in your case every time you take a piss.

With all the ******** names that have been retired (Indians, Fighting Sioux, etc.), how that one has remained is beyond me. It's really about the only one I can see as being offensive.

Good grief, you’re taking things way too personal. You want to embarrass this guy because you disagree with him politically?

I don’t want to embarrass him. That’s why I’m not putting it out there.

And it’s not that I disagree with him, it’s the manor in which he makes his positions, not just politically.
