Incorrect....Yes, the current Republicans are the children and grandchildren of the Dixie Democrats that have run MS politics since reconstruction.
Republicans have only had control of Mississippi House and Senate since 2012....Yes, the current Republicans are the children and grandchildren of the Dixie Democrats that have run MS politics since reconstruction.

Technically, no. The Dixiecrats were a real, anti-segregation party in 1948. In 1968, some of these same guys supported George Wallace as an independent candidate when uber-liberal Hubert Humphrey won the Democratic nomination.About all of them were dixiecrats though, right?
Yep. But I think we’ve seen the Blue Dog Dems death over the last 20 years. One of the main hallmarks of the Blue Dogs was social conservatism. There is little appetite in the modern Democrat party for a Pro-Life Congressman. There’s a Blue Dog caucus in DC still but their numbers continue to shrink. Travis Childers was a member of it.

When LBJ signed the Civil Rights Act he said, “I fear we (the Democratic Party) have lost the southern vote for a generation.” He was almost right as it’s been a little longer. That was what began the trickle of DixieCrats from the Democratic Party.
Back in those days the Republican Party was made up of northern intellectuals, aka William F Buckley type conservatives. The liberals of the Democratic Party were basically of the Kennedy mold.
They did however work together, for the most part, for the common good. This was the folks who put men on the moon.
Now days the extremist are dominating both parties. We need to come back towards the center.
Mississippi began the change from Democrat to Republican when Barry Goldwater ran for President. Current Republicans are pretty much what Democrats were "back in the day". Democrats then were far from what Democrats are now, not only in Mississippi but nationwide.
The party of acceptance...as long as it’s what we think is right.
It will trend back more towards the center after this election cycle. The honest truth is that this version of the republican party only has so much life left in it. Texas will go blue in the next 2-3 presidential elections if things stay as they are. Georgia and NC are right there with it. Hell, the way things are going it might be this election.
The only way to prevent that from happening is to move a hyper right platform back left and recapture those centrist votes. The Republicans have only won the popular vote once since Bush in 1988. The numbers just aren't there.

What you are referring to in old, Southern, conservative Democrats are properly referred to as “Blue Dog Democrats”. This is a play on the term “Yellow Dog Democrats” from the late 1800’s through the Depression when it was said that Southerners would vote for a yellow dog if he was a Democrat.
Dont disagree. Both are equally terrible.
THIS is the problem I have with the POTUS elections of the past 20 years.
I have not seen one person on either side I want I am happy with and have put my vote on the most palatable alternative party person I see. Extremism to the left or right started in the Clinton years and has just accelerated to the **** storm it is today.
Costa Rica looks better everyday. Better healthcare and less expensive living.

What should William Winter’s legacy be though? I met him about 10 years ago and he was an absolute gentleman, very interesting. Afterward, I’m not ashamed to admit I had to Google him. He was governor right before I was born. Turns out he was deeply involved with the Mississippi Sovereignty Commission, and campaigned on a segregationist ticket. Change or heart, or political convenience?
There. Fixed it for you.
