The whole team is pulling a Kylin. Whether their demands are justified or not, it adds weight to the slippery slope argument. At least we're out of the spotlight.

Their position is foolish. A state institution expelling a student because of unpopular speech tees him up nicely for a big lawsuit. This is one of those instances where the First Amendment really does apply. Remember, the whole purpose of the First Amendment is to protect unpopular speech. This generation has a lot to learn about dialogue. And for the record, his statement was idiotic and crass.

I read an article about it, thought about the issue for two minutes, then my head started to hurt.
Just...wt17 is happening here?

That kid who tweeted such a stupid joke needs to be set the 17 straight, but its insane for a team to not practice until a student who tweeted an insensitive joke is kicked out of school.

The kid should be punished by losing out on **** in life because he sucks so much. He should lose out on dating a girl because her parents talk her out of dating a pice of ****. He should lose out on scholarships because a quick Google shows he sucks. Etc etc etc.

There are insensitive people in this world. There are ********.
Students are also demanding the kid be tossed from school. 2020 is 17ing crazy.

Everybody wanting this kid to be kicked out needs to have their **** in order, lest they be next on the judgement block.
No misogynistic rap on their phones. No tweets with derogatory words. No racial references at all in their history.

I cant imagine where all this leads to in 5 years if it doesn't adjust soon.
The pendulum is all sorts of out of balance. Its swinging left and right back and forth like crazy.

As a public school, Kansas State expelling a student over a non-threatening/violent Tweet would surely be overturned by the courts on 1st amendment grounds. A private school might be able to do it.

Now if Kansas State athletes (or any other students) don't feel comfortable there anymore because of his presence on campus, that's their right and they can leave, but I don't think they can really expect him to actually be expelled.

Also, I can assure you that every FBS school has hundreds or more students who quite openly and vocally agree with the Tweet, so it's not like there's some other college that will allow them to be away from that.

Don't understand that either. If he is a student and in school, who knows what might influence or educate him in a different way. I know a lot of us probably went to college with one mindset and graduated with another or at least broadened perspective. I know I did. Education can be a good change for some. Some maybe not. Some people shouldn't say really stupid things but it also might help educating them.

I think Kansas State’s best option is to do what Southern Miss did eight years ago when band members participated in a racially insensitive chant directed toward, yes, a Kansas State player in the Big Dance: Yank whatever scholarships the student has if it’s possible.

The school will cower to the athletes demands and won't give two damns what the athletes say or do. The accused now has 28k twitter followers. We shall see if his followers save him.

Speaking of rap on phones.... along these lines.... a white girl at a MS CC, just last year, made a tik tok video in which the lyrics (as written by the artist) contained the "N word ". The white girl lip synced the lyrics of the song as exactly as the song is written. LIP SYNCED! The black students at that CC absolutely came down her. They got the school involved and tried to get the girl expelled. Lucky for the girl she was moving on to a bigger school and the whole issue kinda went away as far as the school was concerned.

Jimmy Kimmel apologizes for doing skits. Drew Brees.... on and on.

The pendulum has swung fully to the left. There is no free speech. Only left speech. Ironically, in the words of Rage Against the Machine.... "you better do what they (the left) told ya. "

No free speech is not left. It's right. It's like they went so far left, they're right. And ironically it is being promoted by a portion of the left. And right. Cancel culture seems to be a cultural phenomenon across the country and political spectrum, and it almost seems to grow out of social media outrage. Admittedly, it seems most prominent on the left right now. As Bill Burr pointed out, look at the opposite reactions of the left and right to Kaepernick and Brees. Same groups taking opposite positions on free speech depending on what the speech is.

From an article I read, the athletes are demanding punishment for ANY K-State student who publishes on social media statements that are "racist or offensive" to other students at K-State. Who the hell is going to be the judge of this? Also, in the story I read, the perp was described as a racist & "white-supremacist" who used to be a member or officer of a "right wing' student group that supports Trump. The kid made an insensitive post (kids do), but they want to tie it to politics.... Marxism is alive and well at K-State.

Mike Leach had a lot more to lose than this student. THAT is why they went after him so heavily. Not to mention all the people out there who have personal vendettas against him.

The cancel culture just wants to see other people endure pain. That's all it's about. They are frustrated with their own lives and know nothing else to do but to see other people do time. And unfortunately, they have the political advantage right now. You just have to watch your back and survive it all. And above all else, vote.

I suppose I found the content of the Tweet, if if was the bit about Floyd being drug-free now. It was a stupid thing to say, and not something most of us would say, and there are bound to be repercussions, but the guy has the freedom to say what he wants. Mere statements don't justify expulsion. Not living up to the terms of a scholarship (e.g., going to school totally free for playing a sport) does justify expulsion since playing the sport is the only reason the athlete is there. They're free to express their displeasure of course, and the guy can be ostracized by other students, including the athletes, but that's about the extent of it.

Marxism is alive and well at K-State.

There is that term again. Man it's being referenced a lot lately by some on here.
And it continues to be used in a questionable manner.

Has Marxism changed since I learned about it?

I agree with your questioning who will be the judge of if a comment/post/tweet is racist/offensive. That is a potential shitshow and will almost certainly be handled poorly if it were to be created.

I just don't understand how this issue is related to Marxist theory.

Except for your first statement (it may be, it may not be) I agree. And that’s a big part of the problem. Many people don’t know what true racism is these days due to misapplication & overuse of the term.

Call it racially insensitive.
Call it tone deaf to what is happening in society right now.

'Racist' is a catch-all term for a lot of inappropriate comments, jokes, and actions.

Tone deaf is the right phrase here. It’s not even racially insensitive. For it to be racially insensitive, you would need to basically say every black persons is on drugs, so the idiot was making fun of a black stereotype.

The use of racist for everyone that is not a left wing radical has to stop. There are certainly real racist out there, and this student might be one, but it can’t be determined solely by that tweet and that he’s a trump supporter.

Well, when you’re wearing racist-tinted glasses, everything is, well, racist.

There was nothing racist about the tweet. There’s plenty of racist tweets out there that don’t get called out. I’d bet there’s actual racist tweets by K-State students that are ignored. The kid seems to be a loud conservative who isn’t onboard with BLM and has become a target.

The world today reminds me of INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS. Especially the ending.

It’s now been dayS (plural) since the tweet was tweeted. Kansas State has made ZERO effort to lobby for repeal of the first amendment as of yet. And what in the world is going on with their admissions process?!? How did they let an insensitive college kid like this slip through the cracks?! The President of Kansas State University MUST resign immediately!!!!! ******

You guys are the biggest bunch of hypocrites I have ever seen. The kid's tweet was making fun of a black man who had/was obviously struggling with a drug problem and was murdered by a rogue white policeman on camera and that is somehow not really racist ? Hell even my conservative *** considers that racist. I don't consider it grounds for what the football team is doing but c'mon.

I agree with you totally. It's because we as a society have empowered the mob and now the mob rules. Some thing absolutely need to change like the flag, but we have opened a big can of worms now and we may never get them all back in the can. I understand her position but if you think the football team refusing to practice is something, just wait to see what they come up with because the mob is never satisfied. The rights of the individual don't count anymore unless you are part of the mob. Even their acts of violence and disruption of the lives of everyone not involved are championed and praised by the agenda driven national media, celebrities, and politicians.

It reminds me of dark parts of our world history and I would express more of my opinion but I am afraid they will find me and throw me in social media prison.

Exactly. Its just a deflection tactic. Even Stevie Wonder can see the racial connotations, but maybe that's just because he's black.

I think the moral of the story for this kid is stupid actions and words have consequences, which is exactly what he was trying to insinuate about Mr. Floyd. He probably thinks it doesn't apply to him the same way. Some humility would do him well.

Making fun of a drug addict for doing drugs is not racist. He could have made the same comment, word for word, about any other race of person. It was insensitive for sure, but honestly who cares? Sticks and stones, and move on.

FIFY

Could it just have been this? You think if Floyd was white resisting arrest the rogue policeman would have let him off with a warning? For a quick education, watch COPS on TV and you will see that a rogue cop will cross the line regardless of his target's color.

Its racially insensitive because Floyd's death has become a racial movement. The joke is basically making fun of the guy whose deat has helped spark a movement.
Thsts racially insensitive.

Well, when you’re wearing racist-tinted glasses, everything is, well, racist.

There was nothing racist about the tweet.
It was tone deaf and while not racist, Floyd's death is a racial issue so the joke is racially insensitive.

There was no reference to race...period.
Race doesn't need to be directly referred to for a comment to be racially insensitive.

Making fun of a drug addict for doing drugs is not racist. He could have made the same comment, word for word, about any other race of person. It was insensitive for sure, but honestly who cares? Sticks and stones, and move on.
Floyd's death is a spark for the current black equality movement. Making fun of a drug addiction isn't racist on its own, correct.
Making fun of the person whose death has sparked a movement is racially insensitive.

Good lord, this is hilarious. Somehow even after my first post in this thread where I declare I disagree with the player's stance, im somehow against many on this right leaning board.
The kid said something that wasn't funny and was absolutely insensitive. He made a joke about a guy who died perhaps in part because of his skin color.
Its a racially insensitive joke.

Just because it was a WHITE cop who killed a BLACK man, it was a racist act? This makes as much sense as liberals who screamed that white people who were against Obama were racists.

Tell me, do you have mind reading capabilities? I don’t. What I saw was a thug cop with a list of excessive force claims who kneed a a suspect who was resisting arrest. Please point to actual evidence to a racist act in that situation.

Wasn't the tweet like Floyd is drug free for a month or similar? Terrible tweet, but not sure how that's racist other than tweeter is white and Floyd is black... does this make it racist these days?

I don't agree that much with there being hundreds who agree with his tweet at every FBS school, but I do wonder if we'll see private schools who can regulate speech gaining an advantage over public schools in terms of recruiting.

I tend to doubt it. I don't think the players have really thought this out very far since they've included wanting the university to monitor not just racist or threatening behavior, but wanting the school to police for anything "disrespectful" No college in the country has time for that.
