The following is what I emailed to Delbert Last week:

Re: Lack of action by Senate on Flag issue

Delbert:

I’m not sure why I am trying to tell you things you already know, but I am.

The current Mississippi flag was put in place by the state Legislature on February 7, 1894. As all of us who are citizens of Mississippi, you are free to have your opinion on the reasoning, back in 1894, to include the battle flag of the confederacy in the upper left hand corner. My belief is that you are well aware of the very public push to change the flag to a banner more inclusive of the people of Mississippi and the refusal of our current Legislature to consider changing the flag design decision made by the 1894 Legislature.

I have heard all of the political statements made by those who want to push the responsibility for changing the flag, adopted by the legislature, off onto those (the voters of Mississippi) who never voted on the flag we are forced, by an act of the 1894 legislature, to accept as ours.

The truth still remains. The legislature adopted the current flag and they have the power (some would say, responsibility) to bring a public discussion on changing the flag to the floor of the Senate and House of our Legislature.

I am told, the failure to do this is a result of your actions to keep the decision in the Senate Constitution Committee and in doing this, you hope to kill any possibility for a discussion and decision from the legislature (the same elected group, who voted the flag in place many years back).

Sadly, I voted for you in the last election. You had a cute commercial with the lady who never got your name right. I moved past that marketing ploy and voted for a man I hoped would be a leader. Little did I know, when I voted, that I was helping to elect a coward, or a do nothing Lt. Governor. I’ll let you decide which of those two possibilities you want to be remembered as.

You and I both know, bringing this racist flag issue, which hurts our state more and more each day, up for public discussion by the legislature might result in a new flag, or it might not. Regardless, we would know the public position of those we elected when the dust settled. So, what was your response? As I see it, you decided to hold the lost-cause, racist flag issue in committee and sweep any action by the group who voted in this flag back in 1894 under the very thick rugs of some Senate committee room.

IMO, YOU ARE A COWARD. SHAME ON YOU!

I did not send this to Rep. Gunn, because I believe he is fighting to bring the issue to the floor of the house. Also I could not find his email address. Also I am pissed off at him because a few weeks back, he passed me in a yellow zone on the Natchez Trace, doing about 85 MPH, and anything I say to him must also address that.

Today (as soon as I post this), I will send the Governor a similar email. Sweet Tater deserves to hear from me, so I will do that.

You might want to waste some time and email them also. I am certain your words will be better than mine.

Here is his email address

FYI - Delbert issued a statement earlier supporting changing the flag.

Now, it’s likely just him being a politician and jumping on the winning side (fingers crossed), but just for what it’s worth.

Here is my email to the governor:

Governor Reeves:

I’m not sure why I am trying to tell you things you already know, but I am.

The current Mississippi flag was put in place by the state Legislature, with the approval of the presiding/elected Governor on February 7, 1894. As all of us who are citizens of Mississippi, you are free to have your opinion on the reasoning, back in 1894, to include the battle flag of the confederacy in the upper left hand corner. My belief is that you are well aware of the very public push to change the flag to a banner more inclusive of the people of Mississippi and the refusal of our current Legislature to consider changing the flag design decision made by the 1894 Legislature and of your lack of support to do what is right and bring this question back to the body who was responsible for it.

I have heard all of the political statements made by those who want to push the responsibility for changing the flag, adopted by the legislature, off onto those (the voters of Mississippi) who never voted on the flag we are forced, by an act of the 1894 legislature, to accept as ours. I have heard your statements that you don’t want to be responsible for action, or that you are too afraid to do what is right. I’ll let you decide which of these you are.

The truth still remains. The legislature adopted the current flag and they have the power (some would say, responsibility) to bring a public discussion on changing the flag to the floor of the Senate and House of our Legislature. You need to step up to the plate and under your authority, lead them to do that, both publicly and privately. There is work to be done. It needs to be done quickly. You have considerable influence to do what is right. Just do it.

Sadly, I voted for you in the last election. You seemed like a “do things kind of guy”. At least that is what you said when you asked for my vote. I fell for that marketing ploy and voted for a man I hoped would be a leader. Little did I know, when I voted, that I was helping to elect a coward, or a do nothing Governor. As I see it, you decided to hold the lost-cause, racist flag issue up to some future action of none at all. Perhaps like some, you thought no action would sweep what the legislature did back in 1894 under the very thick rugs of some Senate committee room. Congratulations! So far you have accomplished that.

IMO, YOU ARE NOTHING MORE THAN A COWARD. SHAME ON YOU!

Not casting aspersions on Kappa Alpha's but I thought I read somewhere that Tate was a KA at Millsaps. Any confirmation or rebuttal to this?

I just fired off my email to Tater requesting a flag change. I feel certain it will happen by the end of the week. :)

Thanks for doing something other than just posting on SPS. I'm not trying to say the posts here won't influence the legislature guys, but Delbert changed his stand a week after I emailed him, so I claim partial credit.

Of course I was joking that it will change by the end of the week but these emails can't hurt. Flag should have changed years ago.
