Bye Bye "Rebels", UNLV stepping up...

Nevada being nowhere near the south, I never associated Running Rebels with the Confederacy. I guess I always thought of a Running Rebel as a bandit/robber type of character from the old west. I could be wrong but I thought Mississippi officially gave up the name Rebels when they switched to the Black Bears mascot. However, they were and still are referred to as the Rebels by local, regional and national sports media. Will this continue????? If it does, then the media should be called out on it. They can't be sensitive in one sense and not in another. Come on and be consistent.

I can’t wait to hear the national media start referring to OM as the black bears or land sharks, either is fine with me.

They're still officially the Rebels.

Ole Miss are still the Rebels, that is gonna be a problem. They only changed their mascot twice, not their name. Ole Miss also is racist.

The writing has been on the wall for years. It's only a matter of time. No more rebels. No more ole miss. I doubt they can even hang on to their red and blue colors... and definitely not the greys.

Will we ever see a ban on confederate flags in the Grove? I know they removed them from the stadium with the “stick” ban.

Can't believe they didn't officially move away from the name Rebels when they dropped the mascot, Dixie and the battle flag. The name Rebels will soon be gone but they'll do everything they can to hold on to the name Ole Miss. They'll do this by telling everyone it's just a reference to the school and not a reference to what it actually means. I'm betting they'll get a pass on this because the local media, SEC Office and SEC Network will drive this message. The regional media will follow suit and the national media will fall in line and not question it.

Uh, according to the article.... the origins of the rebel nickname and mascot is most certainly in reference to a confederate soldier. It was in response to being Nevada-Southern and they had all kinds of other confederate themes around campus (other than the mascot) until 1976.

Then in 1976, UNLV just decided that rebel didn't refer to the confederacy but the spirit of the student body. Ooooookay.

Unfairly, Ole Miss won't just get a pass to say "we disassociate with the confederacy and rebel is our spirit. So we are keeping Rebels."

Yeah I’m with you. Why in the hell would a state that was admitted into the union during the civil war have a confederate statue?

If they would've adopted Admiral Ackbar as their mascot, this would've already been behind them and they could've kept rebels.**

UNLV has used the "Rebel" mascot since 1969, which was originally a wolf wearing a Confederate Army cap and uniform as the school mascot. Designed partially as a jab at the northern University of Nevada, Reno, it changed over to the current human mascot in 1983.
The mascot was originally named "Beauregard" after the Confederate general who ordered the first shots of the Civil War.

They will rue they day they did not choose Ackbar as the mascot. They could have named themselves the University of Mississippi Mon Calamari Rebels and put the fear of the Force into the Maroon & White Empire and avoided all of this bad press.
It's been one hell of decade for our friends in Oxford.

Did you even read the article? Beauregard was gone after 1973 which is what I referred to when I said "back in the 70's". The current "Rebel" has NOTHING to do with the Confederacy and is NOT named Beauregard. Pay attention, its not hard.

"The design, which Miller sold to UNLV for one dollar, was reflective of Western independence and immediately resonated with students, fans, and the community. The same generation of students who courageously did the right thing by banishing Beauregard embraced the new nonoffensive and Nevada-themed mascot with passion. Hey Reb! has undergone minor changes in the years since—he lost his rifle and added some muscles in 1997—and he has become one of the most beloved mascots in all of college athletics.
UNLV students relegated Beauregard and the Confederate symbols to the history books. Their only presence on campus today is in areas describing the history of the mascot (such as in athletic teams’ media guides), in the Special Collections area of Lied Library, and in the Marjorie Barrick Museum, the former gymnasium that still has the old wood basketball floor with the wolf logo at center court."

not just saying that as a bulldog. I’ve got a degree from OM and I’ve fought the admins from top to bottom, IMO assistant dean all the way to chancellor and they are as gutless and unprincipled as just about any organization I’ve ever seen. Only outdone by BCBSMS executives. Pretty poor company.
